Burger King India cuts tomatoes from menu as prices soar

NEW DELHI, India - Soaring vegetable prices after a bad harvest have prompted Burger King's Indian outlets to take tomatoes off their menu items, following in the footsteps of other fast food giants.

"Even tomatoes need a vacation!" read a notice at an outlet in the capital New Delhi on Thursday.

"Due to unpredictable conditions on the quality and supply of tomato, we are unable to add tomatoes in our food... we are doing our best to get back tomatoes in our burgers."

The burger franchise has operated across India since 2014, replacing its usual lineup of beef burgers with an assortment of chicken and vegetarian substitutes to accommodate Hindu objections to cattle slaughter.

It is the latest of several chains to stop serving the vegetable.

McDonald's said in July it was taking tomatoes off its menus as a temporary measure due to "seasonal issues", local media reported.

American sandwich chain Subway followed suit the same month, saying they were facing "quality issues".

Last week, India's central bank warned that higher food prices had impacted household budgets and were expected to get worse.

It added that tomato prices had soared after bad weather and pest attacks in major production belts.

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government had removed import restrictions to source tomatoes from neighbouring Nepal to help ease pressure on food prices.

Dalai Lama says he feels almost normal as he leaves hospital

NEW DELHI — The Dalai Lama said he felt “normal, almost normal” as he left the New Delhi hospital where he had been treated for a chest infection.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader looked pale but strong and spoke cheerfully to The Associated Press as he walked out of the building after being discharged Friday morning. He had been hospitalized on Tuesday after coming to the capital to consult with doctors.

He is likely to return this week to the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala that has been his headquarters since he fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight the Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on travel in the past year in order to take care of his health.

China doesn’t recognize the Tibetan government-in-exile and hasn’t held any dialogue with the representatives of the Dalai Lama since 2010. Beijing accuses him of seeking to separate Tibet from China.

The Dalai Lama denies being a separatist and says he merely advocates for substantial autonomy and protection of the region’s native Buddhist culture.

At an event with educators in Delhi earlier this month, the Dalai Lama said he is not seeking independence for Tibet, but rather a “reunion” with China under mutually acceptable terms.

In Tibetan Buddhist belief, the soul of its most senior lama is reincarnated into the body of a child, but China says its leaders have the right to choose a successor.

The Dalai Lama also predicted that the political impasse with China could change if he lived for at least another decade. But he said that if he died next year, “the Chinese government will seriously show reincarnation must (happen) in China.”  /muf

Tennis: Dancing Federer hails new IPTL as ‘crazy but fun’

NEW DELHI — World number two Roger Federer hailed the new International Premier Tennis League as “crazy but fun” after sauntering through his debut matches in the Indian capital on Sunday.

A laughing and joking Federer downed Czech world number seven Tomas Berdych in the new team competition’s third leg in New Delhi, where the Swiss veteran was playing for the first time.

The normally composed and focused Federer was clearly enjoying himself during his three matches in front of Indian fans including Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and cricketing great Sunil Gavaskar.

After winning his doubles and mixed doubles matches with Indian teammates Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, Federer celebrated with a courtside dance, before teammate France’s Gael Monfils joined in.

“It’s crazy but it’s good fun. I definitely think there’s a place for this,” Federer said, adding, “It’s competitive, it’s serious but it’s still light-hearted.”

Federer’s Indian Aces defeated the Singapore Slammers 26 points to 16 in the competition which has a quickfire format, including one-set matches hurried along by a 20-second serve clock.

Federer, who has never played in India before, said the experience “was big, it was loud, it was different.”

Federer said he was unsure how much extra tennis he would play next year, and would make a decision on his schedule after the Australian Open in January.

“I gotta be careful not to overplay, clearly. I gotta still decide on Davis Cup, what I’m going to do there,” the 33-year-old said courtside.

“But I’ll have a look after the Australian Open. That’s when I will decide how much I’m going to play next season,” said Federer, who holds a record 17 Gram Slam titles.

“I’m going to play a full schedule like normal but the question is how much more will I add or not.”

Federer is expected to take on Novak Djokovic on Monday night in Delhi for his Indian Aces team before the competition moves on to the final leg in Dubai.

Indian lawmaker arrested in financial scam

NEW DELHI— An opposition national lawmaker was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing funds from a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that collapsed in eastern India, an official said.

The scam left hundreds of thousands of investors virtually penniless.

Srinjoy Bose was arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy, stealing funds and deriving undue financial benefits, said Kanchan Prasad, a spokeswoman for the Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s federal investigating agency.

Bose belongs to the All India Trinamool Congress, the governing party in West Bengal state but an opposition party at the federal level.

The scheme was run by the Saradha Group, a state-based consortium of private companies running collective investment plans. It reportedly collected around 300 billion rupees ($4 billion) from over 1.7 million depositors before it collapsed in April 2013.

Corruption is endemic in India. In September, powerful southern Indian politician Jayaram Jayalalitha was convicted of corruption and sentenced to four years in prison. She was accused of amassing 660 million rupees ($11 million) at a time when she was receiving a token 1 rupee as her monthly salary. She appealed the verdict and is free on bail.

VW previews Taigun compact SUV in India

Barely have the lights dimmed from the Ford Ecosport launch before Volkswagen has announced that it, too, is getting into the B-segment SUV game. If there’s a Tiguan, there’s the Taigun. The latter, sure to cause confusion with sales reps and parking valets everywhere, will be VW’s bid for a cheap, hopefully cheerful SUV. As with many small cars these days, the vehicle will be built in India.

Here’s more from Volkswagen:

At the Auto Expo 2014 (5–11 February) in New Delhi, Volkswagen will present an advanced version of the near-production concept of the Taigun SUV. Compared to the first conceptual design – presented in São Paulo, Brazil – the new sport utility vehicle features a new rear section with outside-mounted spare wheel. And this is exactly the solution our future drivers wished for in the new Taigun. Background: the popularity of the version of the concept shown in São Paulo was simply overwhelming Nonetheless, Volkswagen took the opportunity to analyse feedback from around the world to adapt the new SUV ideally to customers’ wishes. One of these wishes: fast access to the spare wheel without having to empty the boot first. The advanced version of the SUV concept now meets this demand.

Compact dimensions and spacious interior. The Taigun is 3,859 mm long; with mounted spare wheel, it is 3,995 mm; the width of the SUV is 1,728 mm and the height 1,570 mm (with roof rails 1,605 mm). Between the front and rear bumpers, the vehicle sports a wheelbase of 2,470 mm, which is large in relation to its exterior length. Consequence: short overhangs and appealing proportions. Meanwhile, in the spacious interior, the concept car shows how Volkswagen imagines a sophisticated, versatile and compact SUV at affordable prices should be.

Efficient high-tech engine. The four-seat Taigun is powered by a new and fuel-efficient 1.0-litre TSI engine (turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine) with 81 kW / 110 PS (from 5,000/min). Average fuel consumption is just 4.7 l/100km (110 g/km CO2). This enables a range of around 1,000 kilometers (with a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres). The direct-injection turbocharged engine of the Taigun extends the range of the three-cylinder petrol engines based on the EA211 engine series by adding a configuration with direct fuel injection plus turbocharging technology, thus opening a new chapter in Volkswagen’s downsizing strategy. The engine is very fuel-efficient, and it offers high torque at low engine revs (175 Nm from 1,500/min). The concept vehicle (weight: 998 kg) accelerates to 100 km/h in just 9.2 seconds with the new engine. On the “Autobahns” of the country in which it was developed, namely Germany, which essentially do not have a speed limit, the Taigun would reach a top speed of 186 km/h. The engine is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Designed for the urban jungle. The Taigun, which is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels and size 205/50 R17 tires, is adept at handling off-road terrain thanks to its high engine torque and high ground clearance. Nonetheless, the Volkswagen was clearly designed for the urban environment. Wherever it is used, the SUV utilises powerful disc brakes. Also providing a plus in active safety is the ESC electronic stabilisation programme which significantly reduces the risk of skidding.

The design – powerful and confident

Clear silhouette. The body of the Taigun – as compact as it is attractive – has been designed with an independent, confident and sporty look. From the side, the flared wings catch the eye; their powerful form is homogeneously integrated with the lines of the silhouette, which are otherwise very calm and clear, and extends into the doors. Defining the design of the silhouette is the slanted surface below the side windows, the so-called character line in the jargon of the designers. Stylistically, this precise character line connects the front and rear sections of the concept; at the rear, it transitions into the C-pillars. The independent form of these C-pillars is typical of a Volkswagen. The designers also worked in the rear door handles so that they sit flush and appear to be a part of the window design. The entire side profile expresses confidence and safety.

Sporty proportions. In the lower body area, the rugged side trim panels are appealing; they cover the side sills, wheel arches and lower sections of the bumpers. The vehicle’s short overhangs are advantageous both visually and for space utilization. In front, the overhang is just 708 mm and at the rear, 681 mm. Combined with the wheel base, which is wide compared to the compact exterior length, especially sporty proportions as well as – in terms of driving on off-road terrain – very good approach angles (28 degrees in front, 35.5 degrees at the rear) are the result. Last but not least, practical roof rails with integrated LED spotlights upgrade the vehicle’s off-road look when viewed from the side.

Confident front section.
At the front, designers of the Taigun intentionally emulated the larger Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg SUVs. Like them, the concept also exhibits lines that are dominated by horizontal design elements. The striking and powerful front section of the Taigun stands for a design concept that emphasizes the width and thus the confident flair of the SUV. This clear predominance of horizontal lines extends to the design of headlights that are integrated in the front grille. The light signature of the LED daytime running lights frames the grille, thus accentuating the width of the Taigun once more. A metal underbody protection panel was designed into the bumpers. Just as in every other perspective, the concept car – with its balanced proportions – is also very powerful and self-confident at the front; this fact is conveyed by the opulent track width of 1,473 mm (front and rear identical) which is large in relation to the vehicle’s overall width (1,728 mm without mirrors).

Sophisticated rear section.
The newly designed rear section of the Taigun presented in India is characterised by an outside-mounted spare wheel. When the boot lid is opened, it swings out with the lid; the boot lid is hinged on the driver’s side. The rear screen, with the roof spoiler integrated above it, opens separately upwards. As well as at the front, the concept car has a rugged metal underbody protection panel at the rear. The designers have integrated the vehicle licence plate in the centre of this underbody protection panel – between the end pipe of the exhaust system (left) and the towing lug (right). An intriguing detail: the handle for opening the boot lid is homogeneously integrated in the right taillight.

Signalling effect.
The Taigun is painted in a friendly pearl effect color called “Ultra Orange.” The color is designed to underscore the sportiness of the concept car.

Interior – ideal space utilisation

Bright ambience. Like from the outside, , the designers developed a look for the interior that reflects, in its clarity, the spirit of the times in our urban world. Those with an affinity for the latest smart phones or tablet computers will also like the interior design, the feel of its surfaces and the layout of controls in the Taigun. The colour and trim concept plays with a contrast of elegance, on the one side, and the sporty functional off-road character, on the other. The beige seat covers feature a honeycomb structure; the material itself is rugged and easy to clean. The orange piping offers a fresh contrast to the beige hue of the seats and an optical bridge to the colour of the exterior. The inner surfaces of the side supports are covered in faux leather.

Rugged surfaces. The base body of the doors as well as the upper and lower sections of the dashboard were furnished by the designers with a sporty black grain. Painted analogously to the colour of the exterior: the storage compartments in the doors, the centre console and the area below the dashboard. The upper part of the dashboard and the rim of the door inserts, meanwhile, are finished in a metallic beige. All metal applications are made of matt anodised aluminum.

996 litres boot volume.
The SUV is a fine example of optimal space utilization. The tailgate encloses a 280 liter bootspace; when the rear bench seat is folded down, cargo capacity in the Taigun equipped with a double cargo floor increases to 996 litres. Storage compartments are also integrated in the swiveling tailgate (load width: 900 mm), which can be opened with an aluminum handle.

Great vista guaranteed.
The high seat position is typical of an SUV and is based on the desire of many customers to drive a car with optimal comfort in entry and exit and to have the best possible visibility in traffic. Headroom in front is 1,036 mm, while it is 980 mm in the rear seating area; in addition, the vehicle’s long legroom ensures excellent comfort in the rear seating area. The driver’s workspace can be optimally adjusted for every body height; the steering wheel, for example, can be adjusted in height over an angle of 25 degrees.

Intuitive operability.
The operation of all interior functional elements is absolutely intuitive. Best example: the dials in the air nozzles on the dashboard. They can also be used to control the temperature and blower speed and their settings read in an ingeniously simple way. The Taigun is also equipped with an infotainment system on the dashboard; it offers interfaces for all commonly used smart phones. To the right of the radio-navigation system is the combination on/off/volume control. If a smart phone is connected, a “Taigun Infotainment App”, programmed especially for the SUV, appears on the display; the app corresponds to the color and trim concept of the interior.

Everything in view.
Centrally located under the infotainment system and finished in fine aluminum are the hazard warning light switch (middle) and the buttons for rear window heating, defrost function, air conditioning system and exterior lights. Above the radio-navigation system on the dashboard there are three other auxiliary instruments (oil pressure, coolant temperature and charge pressure). Fitting in well with these features is the leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel, which has a sporty flat bottom and fits perfectly in the hands. The response of the Indian trade-fair visitors and the Indian media is something Volkswagen awaits with great excitement – their feedback will also be incorporated into the final conception of the production model.

8 dead in India floods rescue chopper crash

NEW DELHI — Eight people died on Tuesday in northern India when a rescue helicopter helping flood relief efforts crashed near a pilgrimage site, the air force announced.

“The eight persons on board including five crew members sustained fatal injuries” in the crash near Gaurikund in the state of Uttarakhand, said a statement sent to AFP.

The helicopter, a Russian-made Mi-17, was flying a rescue mission in the state where more than 1,000 people have been killed in flash floods and landslides.

The military is leading efforts to evacuate some 6,000 pilgrims and tourists still stranded throughout the state since the floods hit on June 15.

Raging rivers swept away houses, buildings and even entire villages in the state, which was packed with travellers in what is a peak tourist season.

More than 1,000 bridges have been damaged along with roads, cutting off villages and towns.

Gerard Galway, a spokesman for the air force in Uttarakhand, told AFP that the reasons for the crash were being investigated.

About 60 air force helicopters are being used in the rescue efforts.

Clinton to press India to stop buying oil from Iran

KOLKATA — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton landed in India on Sunday with hopes of reinvigorating a relationship seen as losing steam despite efforts to bring the world’s two largest democracies closer.

Clinton was greeted by streets lined with waving well-wishers as she started her visit in Kolkata, where she will tour monuments and meet ordinary citizens in her latest bid to use her star appeal as a diplomatic tool.

She heads on Monday to New Delhi for talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with whom she is expected to raise U.S. calls for India to stop buying oil from Iran, one of the most open disagreements in years between the countries.

Clinton said she saw ample progress in relations with India, pointing to rising trade and cooperation in areas from education to clean energy.

“I think it’s like any relationship—there is progress in some areas that we are very heartened by, and there is more work to be done,” Clinton told reporters before her arrival.

“But that’s the commitment that we make when we say to another country, we want to be your partner,” she said.

After more than a decade of warming relations, India has bristled at a U.S. law that would impose sanctions on banks from countries that buy oil from Iran due to concerns over Tehran’s contested nuclear program.

A senior U.S. official traveling with Clinton acknowledged that India had quietly been cutting back on Iranian oil and that New Delhi—fiercely protective of its sovereignty—could not be seen as buckling under U.S. pressure.

“Our assessment is that India is making good progress but we really need to receive assurances that they’re going to continue to make good progress,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official said that Carlos Pascual, the U.S. point man on the issue, would visit New Delhi later this month to determine the next step. Only EU nations and Japan have so far been given exemptions to the sanctions which go into effect on June 28.

India is highly dependent on foreign energy and has historically enjoyed friendly relations with Tehran.

But the U.S. official said that Indian businesses had made “a major strategic bet” on continuing good relations with the United States and did not want to jeopardize them over Iran.

Clinton will meet Monday morning in Kolkata with West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who took power last year by sweeping out nearly 35 years of communist rule in the eastern state.

Clinton will seek to show solidarity with a fellow female leader but also press Banerjee to back the opening up of India’s fast-growing retail sector to major foreign companies such as Walmart, the U.S. official said.

Banerjee, a fractious ally of Singh’s government, was instrumental in scuttling planned retail reforms. Critics charge that liberalizing the sector would devastate India’s ubiquitous small stores, but foreign retailers contend that they can improve efficiency and consumer choice.

US businesses, once at the vanguard of building ties with India, have voiced disappointment over the deadlock on retail reform along with parliament’s refusal to give US nuclear firms greater protection from liabilities.

Nuclear energy had been a symbolic milestone in the relationship, with former President George W Bush championing a deal that ended India’s decades of isolation over its nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

President Barack Obama has backed another of India’s longtime ambitions by supporting its bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council. But few expect U.N. reform anytime soon and some Indians have accused the Obama administration of a lack of attention.

T.P. Sreenivasan, a former Indian ambassador to the United Nations, said that the initial expectations for the U.S.-India relationship had not been met but that Clinton had the advantage of being considered a friend of New Delhi.

The visit “comes at a useful time as there is a certain amount of strain in relations that needs to be rectified,” he said.

“The relationship has lost momentum partly because… both are preoccupied with their own internal problems,” he said.
