Adidas stuck with Yeezy gear after dropping Kanye

HERZOGENAURACH, Germany -- Adidas said Wednesday it was still weighing what to do with its huge inventory of Kanye West's Yeezy products after it ended its partnership with the controversial rapper.

Potentially not selling the apparel and shoes linked to West would lead to a revenue loss of 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion), the group said, announcing its 2022 full-year results.

Adidas halted its tie-up with West -- now known formally as Ye -- in October after he made a series of anti-Semitic outbursts.

As a result, the group ended production of the highly successful Yeezy line designed together with West.

"Should the company irrevocably decide not to repurpose any of the existing Yeezy product going forward," it would have to write-off the entire inventory, it said.

That would lower the company's operating profit by an additional 500 million euros in 2023, it said.

Along with one-off costs projected to reach 200 million euros related to a company strategic review, Adidas said it could end up with an operating loss of 700 million euros in 2023.

Bjorn Gulden, the group's new chief executive, said the company will use 2023 as a "transition year to build the base for 2024 and 2025".

"We need to reduce inventories and lower discounts. We can then start to build a profitable business again in 2024," he said.

Next year was shaping up to be a key one for sporting apparel companies, with both the European football championships and the Olympic Games taking place.

Adidas on Wednesday also said net profit fell heavily by 83 percent to 254 million euros in 2022, confirming preliminary results released in February.

Besides its woes over the Yeezy line, it was also facing "elevated recession risks in Europe and North America as well as uncertainty around the recovery in Greater China."

"The company's revenue development will also be impacted by the initiatives to significantly reduce high inventory levels," it added.

Nike tops estimates despite hit to profit margins

NEW YORK, United States - Nike reported flat profits on higher sales Tuesday in results that topped estimates and lifted shares as strong demand helped counter the drag from heavy discounting due to excessive inventory.

Profits for the quarter ending at Nov. 30 came in at $1.3 billion, the same as in the year-ago period while revenues jumped 17 percent to $13.3 billion.

"Consumer demand for Nike's portfolio of brands continues to drive strong business momentum in a dynamic environment," said Chief Financial Officer Matthew Friend. "We remain focused on what we can control."

In the wake of supply chain problems in 2021, retailers ramped up deliveries in 2022 but have struggled to align product supply with demand. Excessive quantities of merchandise has forced retailers to liquidate goods at low prices.

In the most recent quarter, Nike's gross margin declined compared with the prior quarter due to higher markdowns, especially in North America, Nike said.

Profit margins were also pressured by higher freight and logistics costs, as well as increased marketing expenses.

But those dynamics were countered by solid demand across most markets, including North America, where sales surged 30 percent from the year-ago period.

In China, where Nike's results have been dented by repeat Covid-19 restrictions, sales slipped three percent. However, that was better than the 16 percent tumble in the prior quarter.

Shares jumped 6.9 percent to $110.30 in after-hours trading.

#KicksStalker: High schooler LaMelo Ball gets signature shoe

LOS ANGELES — Two of LaVar Ball’s sons now have their own signature shoe. The latest one has led to plenty of questions.

Big Baller Brand shoes announced Thursday that it is coming out with a shoe for LaMelo Ball, who is a junior in high school. It is the first signature shoe for a player still in high school.

The MB1, which costs $395, is available for pre-order and will ship in December. In May, Big Baller introduced its first signature shoe for Lonzo Ball, the former UCLA star was drafted second overall by the Lakers. Those go for $495.

LaMelo Ball, who plays for Chino Hills High School, would still be eligible under California Interscholastic Federation rules as long as he’s not wearing his team’s uniform or logo while appearing in any advertisements or promotions for the shoe.

The bigger concern is with the NCAA. LaMelo Ball has committed to UCLA, where he would start playing in 2019.

NCAA spokeswoman Emily James said in an email to The Associated Press that she could not speak specifically about LaMelo Ball but that his eligibility could be at risk if he directly profits from shoe sales.

“Generally speaking, a college athlete or prospect paid for use of their athletics reputation or ability risks their future eligibility in that sport,” James said. “This includes profiting from the sale of items bearing the young person’s name. NCAA rules, however, do allow prospects to promote commercial products prior to enrollment provided it is not for pay.”

LaVar Ball told ESPN on Thursday that his son’s amateur status is not a concern at the moment.

“Who cares? If he can’t play, then he can’t play. It doesn’t mean he’ll stop working out and getting better,” he said. “Maybe in two years they’ll change the rule and he’ll be able to the NBA straight out of high school.”

LaMelo Ball, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 26.7 points and 10 assists as a sophomore last year.

Jimmy Choo introduces customized bridal shoes

For the first time since Jimmy Choo introduced its bespoke service in Europe last year, it’s now offering the bridal customization service to Filipino brides.

The made-to-order bridal shoes service allows the bride to choose the style, the material and color, as well as personalize her pair with her monogram or a date plaque to commemorate her wedding day.

The London-born Jimmy Choo brand has a vast selection of wedding styles, from flat sandals for beach weddings and taller brides, as well as the sexier high-heeled stilettos and classic pumps, and in an array of wedding-appropriate shades—white, off-white, ivory, champagne, silver, gold, glitter—and fabrications—suede, lace, satin, calf and kid leather, as well as exotic skins like crocodile and snake.

Some are even bejeweled.

But for the bespoke bridal service, there are only five styles to choose from: the Anouk, a pointy pump with 4.7” spike heels; the Abel, also a pointy pump with a slightly shorter heel at 3.9”; the Lance, a tall, sexy stiletto with delicate crisscrossing straps; the Luna, a classic peep-toe pump with low platform; and the Cosmic, a round-toe pump with a .98” platform and 4.5” heels.

The base style, usually of satin, costs from P49,500 to a high of P400,000 for the exotic skins.

The service, according to Stores Specialists Inc., the exclusive local distributor of Jimmy Choo in the Philippines, is being offered not just to brides, but also to their mothers and the bridal entourage.

If you’re set to wed in December, however, it may be a bit late as orders take four to six months to deliver. All shoes are made in Italy.

Brides can place their orders at Jimmy Choo in Shangri-La Plaza Mall East Wing and Rustan’s Makati.

With a celebrity front row, Kanye West rolls out Yeezy shoes

NEW YORK— With Beyonce, Rihanna and Diddy among the front-row celebrity royalty, Kanye West rolled out his Yeezy Boost shoe line for Adidas on Thursday as his baby North fussed in mama Kim Kardashian’s arms next to a stone-faced Anna Wintour.

Models, men and women, wore minimal neutral tights or street wear in red, green and black to let the shoes shine in a tech-driven unveiling that included a simulcast to 42 theaters on three continents around the world.

A mysterious Yeezy website with a countdown clock had gone up last week to stoke excitement over the highly anticipated release, West’s inaugural collaboration with Adidas Originals.

An app was set up to take reservations for the gray suede high tops, to be collected and paid for at Adidas and other stores Saturday — in New York City only for the moment.

Reservations were full within minutes, an Adidas spokesman said. Only 9,000 pairs of the 750 Boosts will be sold, at $350 a pop, on Saturday with more available Feb. 28 worldwide.

Kanye’s voice was on blast talking about art, freedom and making a difference as the show opened in a cavernous space downtown. “I want people to feel like awesome is possible,” he declared. Then came the calming drone of a trumpet, followed by loud, edgy music as his models stood solemnly in rows. They marched in lockstep to take their turn in front of a scrum of cameras before walking off in single file to make room for the next line.

West has promised the presentation will be repeated over two days at 10 locations. Lucky ticket-holders who scored theater seats in countries ranging from Australia and Finland to France, Germany, Russia and the UK got to watch live.

Backstage after the show, West was chill and smiling, a pair of his new Yeezys with their thick white soles and wide strap across the laces in place. A side zip and front perforations complete the look of the lead style, which comes with a spare set of laces.

The rapper has big plans to create more Yeezys, for women and kids as well, after leaving Nike for Adidas more than a year ago.

He has spoken of the “isms” in fashion and in life — classism, elitism, racism. But on Thursday, after the crowd thinned out, he had no problems on his mind, refusing to talk about his Grammys diss of Beck, which he retreated from in a radio interview Wednesday.

“I just focus on beauty, fabric, proportion and try to get the price where the kids can get a hold of it,” he told The Associated Press of his Yeezys after urging fans to avoid “shoe wars” and thefts and be patient for more of the shoes to come.

How do the trainers symbolize Kanye?

“It’s not me. It’s the people,” he said. “I think that there’s something that people have been wanting and missing and this is my proposition, you know, to contribute in some way. I want to contribute to society through usable art.”

The star-studded presentation also drew Jay Z, Russell Simmons and Justin Bieber. Beyonce had a good time.

“I thought it was beautiful,” she said backstage after the show. “Very innovative. I loved how the ladies lined up.”

Also attending were Kardashian Momager Kris Jenner and Kim sisters Kendall and Khloe, who smiled from the front row against the backdrop of New York Fashion Week’s opening day and the NBA All-Star game this weekend.

Stella Luna’s Fall 2013 collection is all  Parisian chic as it derives inspiration from the City of Light’s stunning architecture.

Quilted leather embroidery on shoes and laser-cut suede are reminiscent of ballroom floors, while molded leather studs reflect the grand foundation stones of a period Parisian masterpiece.

The collection is a balance of modern minimalism and romantic Art Nouveau, with decorative flourishes such as crystals, fringes, and exotic materials.

Soft suede and patent leather create an interesting play of textures while delicately curved heels show strong yet sensual silhouettes.

Fitflops now thinner and slimmer

After selling its 18 millionth pair in a span of six years, one footwear brand has no intention of coasting along. It recently launched a patent-pending technological breakthrough that creates soles that are relatively thinner and slimmer than earlier iterations.

Styles featuring the Biomimetix midsoles from Fitflop should be a hit in the Philippines; the country is still the biggest market of the brand in Asia. If volume sales are combined with those of other countries in the region, Asia is an even bigger market than the US, said Katie Neiman, the brand’s International PR manager.

“The Fitflop brand is very popular among women in Southeast Asia because we are blessed with tropical weather the whole year round,” said Jimmy Thai, chief executive officer of the Primer Group, which distributes Fitflop and other brands.

“We tend to dress down—hence the continued popularity of the brand’s open-toe styles—but we still want to look put together.”

With the new technology available in some of the styles this season, customers now have more options. The science behind the Biomimetix midsoles is different from the original Microwobbleboard technology, because the former can be made into narrower shoes like the ballerina-inspired flats that were part of the Spring-Summer 2013 collection launched in Malaysia last week.

Lifestyle writers and editors from Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines were flown in for the press presentation and launch party at Publika, a new mall near the tony residential district of Mont Kiara in Kuala Lumpur.

Brand origins

So much has changed, design-wise, with the UK-based brand since its founder Marcia Kilgore worked with biomechanists Dr. David Cook and Darren James. In 2007, the first Fitflop style for women, the Walkstar, was introduced to the market.

The response was immediate and positive. Women gushed about how comfortable the sandals were, how much they could accomplish in a day, and how it seemed they could walk for miles in their Fitflops.

This was exactly what Kilgore wanted to achieve when she began imagining that first pair. As a young mom and entrepreneur, she wanted to include exercise in her daily lifestyle but found herself, like many women, time-poor. The result of her collaboration with the two biomechanists was the world’s first muscle-activating flip-flop.

Neiman recounted how Kilgore would tell them: There are millions of shoes out there. Why do we need another?

“The answer is because so many of us, men and women, are professional jugglers trying to make the most of our lives. When we wear shoes that fit comfortably, we feel like we can do so much more,” Neiman said.

This way of thinking is now the brand’s current slogan: Wear the shoes. Rule the world.

Fashionable crowd

From originally coming up with flip-flops for women strapped for time, the people behind Fitflop are now intent on creating designs that will appeal to the fashionable crowd as well.

“Let’s face it. Every time someone mentions ‘functional footwear,’ the first thing that comes to mind are ugly, clunky shoes,” Neiman said.

While many women are fierce supporters of the brand—labeling themselves “Fitfloppers”—there are still some who wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a pair.

“That’s why we’re continually looking at ways to improve our product,” Neiman said. “After all, fashionistas want to feel good, too.”

Credit for any inroads made with the fashion flock goes to the makeup artists and stylists who are always on their feet.

“A lot of the models who saw makeup artists and stylists sporting Fitflops during Fashion Week asked what they were wearing and whether they were comfortable wearing them. When they found out how comfortable they are, some of the models went out and bought their own pairs,” she added.

Neiman hopes that the fashion flock will like the selection in stores.

Collaborations

To further build the brand, Fitflop has been collaborating with designers, fashion schools and boutiques to come up with limited editions.

Neiman, who has been with Fitflop from the start, listed successful collaborations with Anna Sui, Kirna Zabete, Net-a-Porter, the Wola Nani Cooperative in Cape Town and the London School of Fashion.

For Spring-Summer 2013, quite a number of floral and jewel-like details adorn the women’s range, but one will also notice an expanded men’s line that now includes boat shoes, brogues, sneakers and slides.

Canvas and patent ballerinas for women are also available, while men’s sneakers in yellow, navy and royal blue add a punch of color to any outfit.

Neiman said that they want to grow the men’s market since it makes up only 10 to 20 percent of volume sales.

“Six years ago, we offered one sandal for women. A lot has changed since then. We’re now a footwear brand delivering the epitome in biomechanical engineering and ergonomics that look great for men and women the whole year round,” she said.
