Airline gives passengers free Nintendo Switches
Passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight got more than a small bottle of water when they boarded their plane.
They received a Nintendo Switch system and a download code for the digital version of the “Super Mario Maker 2” game to enjoy as they traveled from Dallas to San Diego on Wednesday, July 17. Many of the passengers were headed to Comic-Con in the California city.
Mario was on hand to greet the passengers when the flight arrived.
The gaming-themed flight highlighted Southwest’s partnership with Nintendo in the Let’s Play Getaway sweepstakes that awards a daily winner a Nintendo Switch system and a download code for the digital version.
The sweepstakes end Aug. 31 with a grand prize winner and three guests receiving roundtrip air travel. RGA

Apple makes splash with waterproof iPhones
SAN FRANCISCO, United States — Apple on Wednesday set out to make a splash with new waterproof iPhones, a smartphone game starring Nintendo’s beloved “Mario” and a push on wireless headphones.
The iPhone 7 and larger iPhone 7 Plus, with new camera technology, improved water resistance and other features, were shown off to applause at an Apple media event in San Francisco.
The flagship devices will be sold at roughly the same price as the models they replace, starting at $649 for the iPhone 7 for US customers, with deliveries in 25 countries beginning September 16.
Revered Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto was a surprise guest at the Apple event, unveiling a new “Super Mario Run” game heading for the iPhone by the year-end holidays.
“We want as many people of all ages to be able to play Super Mario Run,” Miyamoto said.
“We plan to release it at a set price, and then you can play to your heart’s content.” The price was not disclosed.
Apple, Nintendo and game maker Niantic used the event to announce the wildly popular Pokemon Go would be available for Apple Watch users later this month.
Pokemon Go has been downloaded more than 500 million times and billions of kilometers have been walked by players since it was made available free in early July, according to Niantic Labs, which created the game.
No headphone jacks
One new iPhone feature — which may ruffle some feathers — is the removal of the headphone jack, requiring audio to be delivered via Apple’s proprietary “lightning” connector or by wireless.
Lightning connectors were designed from the outset to handle high-quality audio, Apple vice president Phil Schiller told the unveiling event, responding to concerns about the jack removal.
“It comes down to one reason: courage, the courage to move on,” Schiller said of the decision to get rid of the traditional headset port.
“Our smartphones are packed with technologies and we all want more, and it is all fighting for space in that same enclosure. Maintaining an old, single-purpose connector just doesn’t make sense.”
Apple “AirPods” wireless ear pieces and adaptors to plug old-fashioned wired headsets into Lightening ports will come with iPhone 7 models, according to Schiller.
Getting wet
The new-generation iPhones and Apple Watch boast the ability to get wet without getting ruined.
“The first Apple Watch was splash-proof, the Apple Watch Series 2 is swim-proof,” Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams said during the presentation.
The new smartphones come with Apple seeking to reverse declines in sales of the iPhone in an increasingly saturated global market, and boost its Apple Watch — in a slump since the enthusiasm of last year’s release wore off.
Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the new smartphones take advantage of the latest iPhone software, iOS 10.
“We are about to launch iOS 10, our biggest iOS release ever. It is jam-packed with new features,” Cook said.
“Now of course the world’s most advanced mobile operating system deserves the most advanced smartphone, and here it is.”
The iPhone 7 Plus, Apple’s version of a “phablet,” includes dual cameras to improve optical performance and photo quality, the company said.
While Apple has touted total iPhone sales of one billion, the number sold in the quarter ending June 25 fell 15 percent from a year earlier, highlighting concerns over growth for the key profit driver.
Analysts were split on whether new iPhones would help Apple regain momentum.
Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy said the new phones represent “a major upgrade,” with every major subsystem improved.
“I believe Apple did enough to keep the base happy with upgrades and arguably did enough to attract some Android users. The iPhone 7 is a completely new phone,” Moorhead said.
But Neil Saunders of the research firm Conlumino said the iPhone 7 “is not radically different to the previous incarnation.” and that the new features “are unlikely to be persuasive factors in determining whether consumers upgrade or stick with what they have.”
Moving forward on watch
On the wearables front, its new Apple Watch Series 2 will also feature GPS — allowing people to gather fitness data during an outdoor workout without need to take along a smartphone.
“We started shipping Apple Watch just 18 months ago, and already people all over the world are using it in many aspects of their daily lives,” Cook said.
“But we are just getting started.”
Sales figures for the smartwatch are not disclosed by Apple, but surveys show enthusiasm has faded since last year’s release.
Apple saw a 56.7 percent year-over-year drop in sales of the device in the past quarter, research firm IDC said.

Nintendo to launch mini-NES console with 30 classic games
Gamers of the ’90s will experience a sudden rush of nostalgia, as gaming giant Nintendo announced it’s bringing back the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)—in a much smaller form.
The NES classic edition will retain its retro design and serve as a “mini-replica” of the original gaming platform, according to TechCrunch.
Apart from its compact feature, the popular console will come with 30 built-in games including classics like Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, The Legend Of Zelda, Punch Out, Final Fantasy, Donkey Kong and Bubble Bobble.
The console will be able to connect to a TV via an HDMI cable. It will also include a controller designed to work just like the original rectangular NES gamepad. The new controller is compatible with a Wii Remote, and can be used to play virtual console games on a Wii or Wii U.
In addition to HDMI support and minimal cartridges, the returning mini-console will also feature multiple suspend points for users, which will make password security a lot easier.
Nintendo will roll out the NES Classic Edition on Nov. 11. It will be priced at $59.99 (P2,812.96). Khristian Ibarrola

Nintendo’s first smartphone game attracts over one million users
TOKYO — Nintendo said Tuesday its first smartphone game attracted more than one million users three days after release — good news for the Japanese game giant that was long reluctant to stray from its console-only policy.
Last week Nintendo released “Miitomo” — a free-to-play and interactive game which allows users to create “Mii” avatars — as it tries to compete better with rivals.
Users can customize the avatars’ outfit through in-app purchases and interact with characters created by other people or friends.
The avatars ask players questions such as “What did you do on the weekend?” and “What is your favourite food?”, with the answers shared with other characters.
The number of users for the game, rolled out in Japan last Thursday, surpassed the one million mark on Saturday, a spokeswoman said, adding the company does not have an updated figure.
The news sent shares in Nintendo soaring 8.18 percent higher to close at 16,515 yen Tuesday, a day after a national holiday.
The official Twitter account for the game said on Saturday the company was surprised the game attracted so many players so quickly.
Nintendo has struggled as Sony and Microsoft outpaced it in console sales. The three companies are also fighting off a trend toward cheap — even free — downloadable games for smartphones and other mobile devices.
Kyoto-based Nintendo had been criticised for its longstanding refusal to license some of its iconic brands for use on mobile applications.
Last year the holder of the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises announced a tie-up with Tokyo-based mobile gaming company DeNA to develop games for smartphones.
Nintendo also bought a stake in DeNA as part of a deal to develop smartphone games based on its host of popular characters, possibly including Super Mario and Donkey Kong.
Miitomo was only released in Japan initially but will be rolled out in 15 other countries including the United States and France in eight languages this month.

New Nintendo Video Spotlights Upcoming Super Smash Bros. Fighters
REDMOND, Washington, United States — In the final video presentation dedicated to the Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U games, creator Masahiro Sakurai provided many details about previously announced character Cloud from FINAL FANTASY VII, as well as introduced two new playable fighters to the franchise: Corrin from upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Fire Emblem Fates, and Bayonetta from the critically acclaimed Bayonetta games.
Bayonetta was the overall top pick in the recent Fighter Ballot, which asked fans to nominate characters that they would love to see added to the Super Smash Bros. series. Bayonetta was the No. 1 pick in Europe and in the top five in North America. When factoring in the amount of votes, Bayonetta was the clear worldwide choice.

In addition to detailed information about the new characters, Sakurai also revealed two new stages coming to both Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as downloadable content. Midgar – a familiar location for fans of FINAL FANTASY VII – will join the series as Cloud’s stage, while Bayonetta will feel right at home in the Umbra Clock Tower stage. New Mii Fighter outfits will also be added to the game, highlighted by a full costume inspired by Geno from the Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
All of these new additions will be the last downloadable content for Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. This new content brings the total number of playable characters to 58, the total number of stages in both versions of the game to 84 and the number of costumes and hats to 99 and 97, respectively.
“Mr. Sakurai knows how to go out with a smash,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “With the inclusion of even more surprising characters, stages and costumes, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U cement themselves as two of the most robust fighting games of all time.”
Launching as downloadable content planned for February 2016, Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates joins the roster of both Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Like Wii Fit Trainer, Robin and the Villager, players can choose to play as a male or female version of the character. Corrin has the blood of a dragon in his veins, allowing him to transform and pull off attacks like no other fighter. Corrin will be available as a download in Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U for $4.99, or both game versions together for $5.99.
As revealed in the Nintendo Direct presentation last month, Cloud from FINAL FANTASY VII is coming to Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The character will have two costumes: one inspired by the original FINAL FANTASY VII game and one from FINAL FANTASY VII: Advent Children. Like in FINAL FANTASY VII, Cloud possesses Limit Breaks when fighting in Super Smash Bros. As Cloud gives and receives damage, or uses his Down Special Attack, his Limit Break meter will fill. Once full, Cloud can activate his Limit Break. While playing on Midgar, Cloud’s new stage, players can grab Summon Materia that call forth summons from the FINAL FANTASY universe like Ifrit and Bahamut ZERO. Once activated, only the player who triggered the summon will be safe from damage. Cloud and the Midgar stage will be available as a download in Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U for $5.99, or both game versions together for $6.99, beginning within hours of today’s video presentation.
Launching at the same time as Cloud, a new Chocobo hat for Mii Fighters will release as downloadable content. Also launching is a costume based on fan-favorite character Geno from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a classic role-playing game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System created in collaboration with SQUARE ENIX. Additionally, Mii Fighter costumes for Sonic the Hedgehog series characters Knuckles and Tails, and even costumes inspired by more characters from other franchises will be made available for download in February 2016.
The Umbra Witch herself is joining the giant cast of playable characters in Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a result of the worldwide Fighter Ballot. Just like in her action games, Bayonetta is a combo fighter in Super Smash Bros., chaining different kinds of attacks together. Her signature move is Witch Time, which slows down opponents if they are within range. Her new exclusive stage is called Umbra Clock Tower and is filled with moving platforms and even an alternate world. Bayonetta and the Umbra Clock Tower stage are planned for launch in February 2016, both available for download in Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U for $5.99, or both game versions together for $6.99.
As with all the other playable Super Smash Bros. characters, Cloud, Corrin and Bayonetta will also get their own amiibo figures. More information about these upcoming amiibo figures will be revealed in the future. Additionally, amiibo figures for current fighters Ryu and Roy, along with a Famicom Color version R.O.B., will launch on March 18. All amiibo figures are sold separately.

‘Super Mario,’ ‘Pokemon’ may soon be on smartphones
TOKYO, Japan — After years of scoffing at the threat from smartphones, Nintendo Co. is doing an about face and entering an alliance with Japanese mobile game company DeNA Co. to develop games for mobile devices.
The announcement Tuesday means that Nintendo’s trademark game characters such as Super Mario and Pokemon could finally feature on smartphones and tablets. Such characters have been fiercely protected by Nintendo, appearing only on Nintendo platforms such as the Wii home console and 3DS mobile machines.
Both sides said they will build a global membership service for various devices including personal computers, smartphones and Nintendo machines. The service is set to launch in the fall of 2015.
They said the mobile games won’t be mere adaptations of the games already out for the Nintendo machines but developed especially for the smartphone experience.
The alliance will be combining Nintendo’s intellectual property and game development skills with DeNA’s expertise in mobile games, the announcement said.
Under the alliance, Kyoto-based Nintendo will acquire about 15 million DeNA shares or a 10 percent stake. In return, DeNA will acquire about 1.759 million Nintendo shares, or 1.24 percent of the company. Both acquisitions are worth 22 billion yen ($182 million). The payment is due April 2, they said.
Nintendo has run into trouble in the past few years as people increasingly turned to mobile phones to play games and spend time on social networks. The company is expecting to turn a profit for the fiscal year ending later this month, a turnaround from red ink the previous year.
Tokyo-based DeNA, founded in 1999, has a reputation as an innovator and is one of the most successful of a new generation of Japanese technology companies. It develops and operates a broad range of mobile and online services including games and e-commerce.

Nintendo launching ‘amiibo’ with 12 characters
LOS ANGELES — Pikachu and Link will be among the first characters coming to “amiibo.”
Nintendo announced Friday that 12 characters will initially be part of its upcoming toy-game franchise set for release later this year. In addition to the “Pokemon” and “Legend of Zelda” leading men, the starting line-up will include Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Marth, the “Wii Fit” Trainer and the Villager from “Animal Crossing.”
The figures in the “amiibo” toy-game line will each cost $12.99 and work in tandem with several of the Japanese gaming giant’s upcoming titles, beginning with “Super Smash Bros.”
“We wanted to make sure that the breadth of characters we had for the initial ‘amiibo’ line-up supported the fan favorites, as well as showcase the variety of people Nintendo speaks to — from kids to adults,” Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in an interview. “For example, you’ve got a character like Marth from the ‘Fire Emblem’ series. We thought exposing Marth to a wider collection of consumers through ‘amiibo’ made a ton of sense, but, of course, we had to have Mario, Princess Peach and Donkey Kong in that initial line-up, as well.”
Similar to Activision’s “Skylanders” and “Disney Infinity,” the characters’ virtual histories will be stored on the plastic figures and transmitted through the Wii U GamePad, the controller for the Wii U console that features a touchscreen and near field communication (NFC) capabilities. Unlike the Activision Blizzard Inc. and Walt Disney Co. franchises, the “amiibo” figures will work with several games from different genres and won’t be required to play the games.
“Our vision is to have these ‘amiibo’ figures be your playable friends that allow you to enhance the overall experience,” said Fils-Aime. “It’s a different approach from Activision and Disney, which is more to unlock something in the game. You’re going to want to have your ‘amiibo’ figure because it’s going to allow you to enhance your skills, upgrade your character and take the experience over to a friend’s house.”
Nintendo first unveiled “amiibo” at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. The company plans to release more figures over the next year and include “amiibo” functionality in future games, as well as compatibility with its handheld Nintendo 3DS system.
The Kyoto, Japan-based company is hoping the figurines will help boost its bottom line and sales of its beleaguered Wii U console, which has been on the rise since the May release of “Mario Kart 8.” Despite the success of the latest installment in the cartoony Nintendo racing series, Wii U sales still trail behind the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles from rivals Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.
“Call of Duty” and “Assassin’s Creed” publishers Activision and Ubisoft Entertainment recently said they wouldn’t bring the new installments of those popular series to the Wii U later this year.
“In the end, I want the very best of every single publisher’s content on our platform,” said Fils-Aime. “We believe we’ll get there as we grow the install base of the system. Make no mistake: The consumer knows they can get high-quality games on the Wii U console. That’s why our business is up almost double over last year.”
Nintendo will be showing off upcoming games like “Super Smash Bros.,” ”Hyrule Warriors” and “Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker” at PAX Prime, a four-day celebration of gaming that kicks off Friday in Seattle.

New consoles, online games to keep market soaring to 2017
PARIS— The global video gaming market is set to grow 11.1 percent a year until 2017, boosted by a new generation of consoles and the increasing popularity of online games, according to IDATE digital research and consultancy firm.
The market, estimated at 53.9 billion euros ($73.8 billion) this year, is expected to soar to 82.1 billion euros in 2017, the France-based firm said in a report.
Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, which are jostling for control of the gaming market, have each released the latest versions of their consoles ahead of the Christmas shopping season.
The wave of new devices is expected to keep the market buoyant until 2017, IDATE said.
Home consoles like Sony’s PlayStation or Microsoft’s Xbox, which make up 31 percent of the market today, are expected to have a 40 percent share of the total market in 2017.
Handheld consoles such as Nintendo’s 3DS or Sony’s PSVita, which have a share of about 22 percent in 2013, are projected to record declining share to 13 percent in 2017, in the face of increasing strong competition from tablets and mobile phones.
“Smartphones and tablets offer a radically different experience, and… in terms of the budget, the tablet is a significant competitor for the consoles,” Laurent Michaud, who is in charge of gaming research at IDATE.
“The choice of purchase between the tablet and the console will determine the success of this generation of machines,” he said.
The offline computer game is expected to record an irreversible decline, while this year online games are emerging as the leader.
The increasing popularity of online games stems from the fact that they dominate the gaming industry in China and South Korea, Michaud noted.
“They are games oriented towards ‘Free2Play’ and it is no surprise that they are gaining colossal success because the games are good,” he said, referring to the downloadable games.
One example is the online game Candy Crush which records 700 million sessions a day and racks up daily sales of $850,000 (630,000 euros).
Online games are expected to record average growth of 11.4 percent while mobile gaming is seen progressing by 12.2 percent annually between 2013 and 2017.
Traditional game developers which are used to selling physical copies of their games on discs, have not been keeping pace with virtual ones.
Many were slow to exploit the phenomenal success of games played on social networks.
In December 2012, only Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Namco Bandai Games, Konami, Take Two Interactive et Disney Interactive Studio were present on Facebook.
They have also been slow to join on the smartphone and tablette bandwagon.
In December 2012, only Electronic Arts and Square Enix were among the top revenue generators on Apple’s App Store. And only Electronic Arts and Take Two Interactive had games that ranked in the top 20 by revenues.
On Android Market, none of the traditional gave developers had games on the bestsellers’ list.

Wii U Sales are Up 200%!
It seems reports of the Wii U‘s demise might just be premature. Nintendo‘s home console has seen it’s sales rise by more than 200 % for the month of September.
Nintendo recently dropped the price of its Wii U by $50 to $299.99. The company also began offering a Wii U bundle with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in September. The price drop and excitement over the new exclusive and bundle are thought to be the causes of the uptick in sales.
While the Wii U’s sales are up, it still trails the Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and it will face the new consoles from both companies this Holiday season. Sony unseated Microsoft in September, selling more PS3′s than Xbox 360s for the first time in 32 months.
Hopefully the big N can keep the exclusives coming, at least enough to keep the Wii U in the game long enough for the Wii – V to come out! (I kid, I kid)
For more information, Nintendo’s press release follows below:

Nintendo 3DS Repeats at No. 1, Wii U Responds Following Price Cut
Nintendo enters the critical holiday selling season with strong momentum, as Nintendo 3DS finished as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive month and Wii U enjoyed new momentum following a price cut.
On Oct. 15, Nintendo revealed that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, which launched globally on Oct. 12, combined to sell more than 4 million units worldwide during its first two days on the market. A full breakdown of U.S. sales for the games, as well as the new Nintendo 2DS handheld, which launched on the same day, will be included in next month’s NPD report. In addition to the latest Pokémon adventure, Nintendo 3DS fans have two exciting games on the horizon, both launching on Nov. 22: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Mario Party: Island Tour.
On Sept. 20, Nintendo reduced the price of the Wii U Deluxe Set by $50 to a suggested retail price of $299.99 and introduced a limited-edition bundle that features a download code for a digital copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Sales of Wii U hardware in September increased by more than 200 percent over sales in August, and that is with only 15 days of data being reported at the new price. Over the next few weeks and months, Wii U fans can look forward to playing Wii Party U (Oct. 25), Wii Fit U (Nintendo eShop, Nov. 1) Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Nov. 15) and Super Mario 3D World (Nov. 22).
*Data regarding physical sales of games in September are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.
