Former Green Bay Packers left tackle Chad Clifton, who was cut by the team last month after failing a physical due to back problems, hopes to continue his playing career after strengthening his back.
In an interview with ESPN Wisconsin on Friday, Clifton called his release by Green Bay, where he played 12 years, a “bitter pill.” He said he is still adjusting to being a former Packer.
“Right now, I’m back in Nashville, trying to get my back as strong as possible, just trying to get healthy, and we’ll take it from there,” Clifton said. “If there’s interest, we’ll see if I’m interested and kind of play it by ear. If it’s the right situation, I think I would (try to play). Again, I’m going to have to get healthy, and that’s the No. 1 thing on my mind right now—to get my back as strong as I can.”
A two-time Pro Bowl pick, Clifton will turn 36 next month. He was limited to six games last season because of hamstring and back injuries, after starting at least 15 games in seven of the previous eight seasons.
Clifton, who protected the blind side of both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, predicts quarterback Rodgers will join Favre in the Hall of Fame someday. Favre is eligible for induction in 2015.
"I think I see what everybody else sees," Clifton said of Rodgers. "He's obviously very talented, very, very competitive—100 percent, I think he’s going to be in the Hall of Fame, right alongside Brett and a lot of the other great quarterbacks who have come through this league. He's got that kind of talent, that kind of will, and he's a great, phenomenal player."
