MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ Catriona Gray is Miss Universe 2018.
Gray was hailed as Miss Universe 2018 during the coronation held at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday.
The 24-year-old beauty queen from Albay bested Miss South Africa and Miss Venezuela in the Top 3, as well as candidates from 91 other countries, to take the crown.
South Africa’s Tamaryn Green finished 1st runner-up, while Venezuela’s Sthefany Gutiérrez finished 2nd runner-up.
During the Top 5 question and answer portion, Gray was asked about her stand regarding the legalization of marijuana.
“I’m for it being used in a medical use but not so for recreational use, because I think if people were to argue what about alchohol and cigarettes, well everything is good but in moderation,” Gray said.
For the final question, Gray and her Top 3 contenders were asked: “What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life, and how would you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?”
Gray answered: “I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is very poor, sad and I’ve always taught myself to look for the beauty in it, to look in the beauty of the children and be grateful.”
“I would bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson.”
“If I could teach people to be grateful, we could have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children would have smiles on their faces.”
Gray was crowned by Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa.
The coronation was hosted by comedian Steve Harvey and supermodel Ashley Graham, while American singer-songwriter Ne-Yo performed at the competition.
Gray bagged the country’s fourth Miss U title, following Pia Wurtzbach in 2015, Margie Moran in 1973 and Gloria Diaz in 1969. /cbb

Acne-prone skin? It might be the alcohol in your routine
If you’re still suffering from acne and dry skin past your early twenties, consider getting rid of all your skincare products that contain denatured alcohol, especially your toner. It’s the one skincare trick that I stand by. Since I eliminated denatured alcohol from my routine years ago, my other products work better on my skin.
Denatured alcohol is quite common in drugstore toners, if not the main ingredient. It’s also in some acne spot treatments. A few micellar water formulations also contain a bit of it too. That’s why it’s hard to defeat acne with these products. It’s also hard to believe that something so common in the beauty industry is creating more problems. But that’s the thing with skincare: it is different for every person and it can take a lot of trial-and-error to find something tailor-made to your needs.
A small disclaimer, though: I have encountered people who say that these denatured alcohol products do help them. And denatured alcohol’s prevalence proves that it works for most, given its anti-bacterial power. But if you’re someone like me, who never misses out on doing their nightly routine yet still sees bumps, you may need to go the alcohol free-route.
Pixi by Petra Glow Peel Pads
A purchase I made last minute at the cashier, this product has rightfully earned its cult status. Not only did it keep my skin acne-free, it also helps lighten the dark spots caused by old pimples. Most skincare fanatics prefer the one which contains 20 percent glycolic acid. But if you’re just starting out, try first the 5 percent one and see how it goes.
This toner is from one of my favorite homegrown brands. It contains beta hydroxyl acid which makes pores smaller and unclogs them. The acid is balanced out by the calming effects of bearberry and tomato extracts.
Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner
If your skin is particularly sensitive, this is one sure choice. I like how this feels like water on the skin yet still keeps my skin clear with calendula, burdock root and allantoin. All these plant-derived substances make for a gentle but effective way to reduce oil production.
T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel 100% Natural Astringent
If you’re not yet sure whether the cause of your pimples is indeed denatured alcohol, try using this one for a month. It’s what I did when I initially tested my theory. Buy a small bottle and if your skin is like mine, you’ll see no new spots plus reduced redness, damage and blemishes.
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
The hype over this product from this social media brand is real. There’s a bit of a sting to this formula so I would only recommend this if you’re certain that you can take the glycolic acid. If the witch hazel proves that you and denatured alcohol don’t get along, move on to this one to quickly exfoliate all the blemishes and old acne marks. JB

Japanese brand is more than just makeup base
Japanese skincare and makeup brand Kanebo is all set to launch a brand new look and marketing campaign to mark its 80th anniversary this year. At the sneak preview in Tokyo last May, company officials discussed its three-pronged approach to market its skincare line consisting of products that “transcend function alone by appealing to the senses.”
First, Kanebo will encourage women to “enjoy their beauty” by accepting their differences. Next, beauty consultants are trained to provide personalized counseling based on a woman’s daily, weekly, monthly and yearlong needs—a new development the company calls “Chrono Beauty,” where the changing needs of women as they mature are addressed using the corresponding product.
Lastly, it promises to provide women a total sensory experience with products that smell good and are easy to apply. A bonus is the sleek, tactile containers that call to mind flowing water and were designed by Gwenael Nicolas.
The eight-item skincare range includes a day cream with SPF 15, night lipid wear, “The First Serum,” two types of lotion, two types of emulsion, a cleansing cream, cleansing oil and creamy wash.
Brand manager Robby da Silva said that Kanebo is focusing on the line’s day cream, night lipid wear and First Serum.
“The last is a unique item that draws the moisture from subsequent products which is essential in increasing skin moisture,” he said.
Last collection
Lunasol, the skincare brand from Kanebo, will eventually be phased out—the last collection is the current autumn range. In its place, a Kanebo-branded range consisting of 16 items and 34 SKU (stock keeping units) will be introduced.
Makeup fans can look forward to everything from Full Radiance foundation, Glow Primer and eyeshadows to Moisture Rouge, dual eyeliners and eyebrow pencils.
Long-time customers who had the chance to check out the products in a private selling event, however, zeroed in on the base products: foundation, primer and loose powder. For them, Kanebo has always been synonymous to foundation that provides perfectly sheer or full coverage.
Fronting the company’s new look and marketing campaign is American model Arizona Muse, whose easygoing beauty is hoped to attract a younger market.
The new skincare and makeup from Kanebo will be available this month at Rustans Makati, Shangri-La Plaza and Cebu.

Here’s the Deal Behind Alicia Keys’ #NoMakeup Music Video Look
Last month, Alicia Keys released the video for her newest single “In Common” where she’s seen without any makeup on. Don’t get us wrong, she looks beautiful with and without makeup, but we wonder why she decided to go for that look.
In the latest issue of Lenny Letter, Alicia reveals that she’s been going for the au naturel look ever since she worked with photographer Paola Kudacki for her upcoming album. “It wasn’t until I walked into one of my first shoots for my new album recently that the issue was front and center again,” she writes. “I’d just come from the gym, had a scarf under my baseball cap, and the beautiful photographer Paola (never met a Paola I didn’t like) said, ‘I have to shoot you right now, like this! The music is raw and real, and these photos have to be too!'”
The photo Paola took is now the official cover art for her single, “In Common.”
Aside from her music video, Alicia has also fronted the latest issues of Vanity Fair and Fault Magazine without any makeup on. She adds on her column that she hopes this #nomakeup trend becomes a revolution among women.
“I felt powerful because my initial intentions realized themselves. My desire to listen to myself, to tear down the walls I built over all those years, to be full of purpose, and to be myself! The universe was listening to those things I’d promised myself, or maybe I was just finally listening to the universe, but however it goes, that’s how this whole #nomakeup thing began,” she writes. “I hope to God it’s a revolution. ‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Pia Wurtzbach hurdles unexpected twists and turns to win third Miss Universe crown for PH
“It was my fault,” Harvey kept telling a global TV audience and those who paid to watch the show at Planet Hollywood Hotel in Las Vegas, venue of this year’s contest.
This year’s edition, under new owners IMG, a New York-based events and talent management company, which bought the 64-year-old beauty pageant from billionaire businessman and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, proceeded without a hitch until Harvey announced the names of the winner and first runner-up.
Miss USA Olivia Jordan, who, like Wurtzbach, was an online and crowd favorite, clinched second runner-up.
“Since Steve was new at hosting Miss Universe, I think he was confused,” said Manila-based publicists and events planner Albert Almendralejo, who witnessed the entire show up close. “I heard that he was told by the Miss Universe staff to announce Miss Colombia’s name first before Pia’s. He did do that, but he unwittingly managed to interchange their positions.”
After realizing his mistake, Harvey had to correct himself to the shock of both Arevalo, who was already wearing the crown and waving a small Colombia flag, and Wurtzbach, who was already in the sidelines with Jordan and the other delegates. He even waved the written results to the audience to convince them.
With some prodding from Jordan, a reluctant Wurtzbach walked to the center of the stage. It probably took awhile for the Spanish-speaking Arevalo to realize what was happening, said Almendralejo, since she just stood stoically with “her chin up.”
Boos and jeers from the Latino audience were countered by cheers from Wurtzbach’s Filipino supporters, who dominated the venue.
It took Arevalo’s compatriot Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega to break the impasse by gently removing the crown from the first runner-up’s head and putting it on Wurztbach’s.
“Not everything was captured on TV,” said Almendralejo. “A crying Miss Colombia run to her fellow Latinas, while a somewhat dazed Pia received support and profuse congratulations from Miss USA and most of the delegates from Asia and Europe.”
“I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians (sic) and Miss Columbia (sic),” Harvey later said on Twitter. “This was an honest human mistake. I am so regretful.”
Instead of the usual ten to 12 judges, only four celebrity judges, including Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo, determined the results this year. For the first time in the pageant’s history, organizers allowed online voting to constitute 20 percent of a contestant’s overall score in each event. There were four events: swimsuit, evening gown, and two sets of question and answer.
From Top 15 contestants, the results of last week’s preliminaries, the number of girls was whittled down to 10, then five and finally three. When the combined online votes were counted, Wurtzbach emerged on top.
Each contestant in the Top 5 answered a question relating to current issues in her country. Wurtzbach was asked about her views on the presence of American troops in the Philippines.
Filipinos and Americans, she said, have had a long history and “special relations.” As a “colonized” people, Filipinos are generally welcoming of Americans. She didn’t see it as a “problem.”
For the second set of question and answer, the Top 3 were each asked the same question: Asked why she wants to become Miss Universe, Wurztbach gave a short and straight answer about the importance of having a global platform to pursue her advocacy of AIDS and HIV awareness. Being Miss Universe, she said, is about being “confidently beautiful with a heart.”
Another twist awaited the Top 3 as Harvey told them that their fellow delegates would also weigh in on the final outcome. For the first time in years, the Philippine delegate was wearing a gown designed by a Filipino–Albert Andrada. Pageant observers believed that the blue silk gazaar serpentina gown was instrumental in boosting Wurtzbach’s chances in the finals.
Wurtzbach follows in the footsteps of Margarita Moran, the second Filipina to win Miss Universe in 1973. Moran won the titled four years after Gloria Diaz first brought home the crown to the Philippines.

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell wins Miss America pageant
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is the new Miss America, but her crowning moment was nearly overshadowed by a three-decade old pageant scandal, and a still-raw debate over whether the NFL’s reigning champions cheated on their way to a Super Bowl victory.
Cantrell rode an opera performance of “Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio” from “Madame Butterfly” to the title in Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday night, besting 51 other competitors in the nationally televised pageant. She won a preliminary competition earlier in the week, also with an opera performance.
“I’m still so overwhelmed, I don’t know what to say other than thank you! ” Cantrell told reporters moments after being crowned Miss America.
She won a $50,000 scholarship along with her title.
Cantrell is due to make the traditional pageant-winner’s frolic in the Atlantic City surf on Monday morning.
The pageant also marked the return of Miss America 1984 Vanessa Williams, who was back for the first time after resigning the crown in 1984 following a nude photo scandal. Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell apologized to Williams, who served as head judge, on behalf of the pageant.
“I want to apologize for anything that was said or done,” Haskell told Williams as they stood on the stage and the audience bathed her in applause. “Vanessa: Welcome back!”
Cantrell was asked during the question and answer portion of the pageant whether New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cheated en route to his team’s run to a Super Bowl title last season by using footballs that were improperly deflated. A league-imposed four-game suspension of Brady was recently overturned by a federal judge.
During the pageant, Cantrell said, “I’m not sure” when asked if Brady cheated. “I’d have to see the ball and feel it” she said, before adding, “If there’s any question, then yes, he cheated.”
Asked by The Associated Press to clarify her remarks afterward, Cantrell said, “It was kind of a funky question to ask me if Tom Brady cheated. I’m not a football player and I really wasn’t there to feel that ball. If there was any question as to whether or not he cheated and somebody else felt the ball and decided that it was deflated, then yes, I guess he did cheat.”
The 1st runner-up was Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts, who earned a $25,000 scholarship. Her talent was classical violin. The 2nd runner up was Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, who performed an original monologue and won a $20,000 scholarship.
Miss Georgia’s win ended New York’s dominance at the Miss America pageant. Last year’s Miss America, Kira Kazantsev, was the third consecutive Miss New York to win the title.
“I can’t believe it’s been a year since I was backstage getting ready to compete, just as the contestants are right now,” Kazantsev said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon in Boardwalk Hall. ”
Preliminary competition in talent, interviews, evening wear and swimsuit competition ran through Thursday.
On Saturday, the Miss America contestants hit the Atlantic City Boardwalk for the annual “Show Us Your Shoes” parade.
Most of the shoes had designs specific to the contestant’s home states. New Jersey, for instance, had dice and Monopoly money on her shoes in a nod to the pageant’s Atlantic City history. Miss Idaho had a potato.
Contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico were vying for the crown. The U.S. Virgin islands, which competed last year, could not field the required minimum number of entrants this year, pageant officials said. It is eligible for future competitions.

MAC’s new lipsticks will turn you into a Valli girl
When it comes to MAC collections, you snooze, you lose.
Fans of the brand are so quick to snatch up new releases that collections sell out in a flash.
The latest one, and the reason many lipstick lovers hit the malls bright and early on September 1, is MAC’s collaboration with Giambattista Valli.
The Paris-based Italian designer has won over fashionable women with creations that combine elegance and whimsy, timelessness and femininity. Stars like Amy Adams, Charlize Theron, Lena Dunham, Reese Witherspoon and Rihanna have been spotted wearing his designs on the red carpet. Jessica Biel wore a petal pink Giambattista Valli gown when she married Justin Timberlake.
Now, MAC fans around the world will get to enjoy Valli’s aesthetic with his collection of six lip products which, he says, was inspired partly by an interview David Letterman did with Anna Wintour. “Letterman asked, “How can you change the wardrobe of a woman with just $20?” Anna replied, “You go out and pick a brand new lipstick.” I thought that was so brilliant. So my idea was to put together the Valli colors — reds, pinks and fuchsia — hues that fit any kind of personality.”
There are five matte lipsticks in the collection, all named after friends he grew up with, his Valli girls—independent, stylish women who enjoy freedom and do their own thing. Valli said, “Their personality makes them a leader.”
Bianca B is a pale white-pink. Tats is a bright hot pink. Margherita is a yellow bright peach, Charlotte is a rich yellow-red and Eugenie is a dark cherry with blue undertones.
There’s also a Crystal Glaze Gloss called Lena, a clear gloss with multicolored pearl that can be layered over lipstick to make it shine.
We love that the bullets show the color of the lipstick inside, making it easy to know which one to grab and swipe on for a little Valli girl vibe.
MAC X Giambattista Valli is available at MAC Glorietta, Rustan’s Shangri-La, SM Mall of Asia, Trinoma, Rockwell, Ayala Center Cebu, Eastwood, Alabang, SM Aura, Megamall, Robinsons Place Magnolia, Robinsons Place Manila, SM Makati and SM North Edsa.

Do You Want to Smell Like Ariana Grande?
When she’s not too busy licking frosted donuts, Ariana Grande also dabbles in making perfume. This September, she will drop fragrant, florally bomb of a perfume
According to her scent’s website, ARI by Ariana Grande is a “luscious and sexy fragrance [that] opens with sparkling fruits and an ultra-feminine florally (sic) passionately spun with musks and woods and an addictive hint of marshmallow.” Well, it’s very Ariana.
But wait, marshmallows? She sure takes her sweets seriously.
The perfume comes in a pink, spiky grenade-shaped bottle, of course. The puffy white bunny tail attached to it reminds you of the star and her naughty but nice image. Hey, if she can wear cat ears, why can’t Ariana’s scent wear bunny tails, right?
We would have to see how this one fares considering a tanking of celebrity perfumes due to lack of prestige.
For now, we have to clue as to how it will smell like or how it will smell on her. But you can try sniffing at her concert here in Manila next month for any nuance of the scent.

Tomboy chic meets surfer girl
“I’ve always been a fan of comfort dressing,” says model Anna Frumenti, who likes wearing mannish clothes while working as a designer for emerging local fashion brand Beetroot, traveling to various cities and taking photos using film.
Projecting a tomboy-chic-meets-surfer-girl image, Anna points out that Beetroot is “like a response to what we wanted to wear but couldn’t find anywhere. I’m an advocate of nonrestricting bras.”
The pieces indeed feel like second skin; the bras have ample support, but are still light and easy.
The brand is found in pop-up shops and bazaars; that’s incidentally where we chanced upon Anna.
Apart from her regular minimalist outfits, Anna’s wardrobe reveals a good number of stuff borrowed from the boys.
“[But] I got these leather shoes in Giordano Ladies on sale,” she quips.
As part of her grooming rituals, Anna prefers Lush Sea Salt Shampoo: “It smells good and works well with my hair after the treatments.”
Showing off the contents of her little beauty bag, Anna revels in the crazy colors of Nars lipstick and the Bare Minerals tint.
She says that, during her travels, it always helps to carry sunscreen, specifically Laura Mercier that doubles up as a moisturizer.
As laid-back as she appears, Anna has a beauty aesthetic that is far from plain. Her fashion sense oozes with nonchalance but is nonetheless carefully put together.

Megan Young tells what it takes to win Miss World title
MANILA, Philippines—The next Miss World should be “genuine.”
Reigning Miss World Megan Young made known her preference for her successor in an interview posted on the Miss World website.
“I hope that the next Miss World, whoever she is, is genuine. It is a competition but her authenticity is what will win the judges over and carry her throughout her reign,” Young said.
She said being a Miss World title holder is not all about beauty and glamor.
“A lot of it is really behind the scenes and about getting your feet dirty without your heels and without the make-up,” she said.
The 24-year old beauty queen also emphasized patience.
“My advice is to be patient. In this job, patience is a virtue. Also, it is important to always be understanding and nice to everyone you meet. Kindness and compassion will take you a long way,” she said.
On her part, she admitted that she was “at first afraid” when she was crowned the title.
“I thought that I was not going to be able to see my family, as the job of a Miss World is non-stop humanitarian work, and that was something I didn’t know how to come to terms with,” she said.

“I thought that I was not going to be able to see my family, as the job of a Miss World is non-stop humanitarian work, and that was something I didn’t know how to come to terms with,” she said.
But she said she was thankful that between travelling around the world and seeing new things, she was able to return home and visit her family.
“That was really helpful as it kept me levelheaded and sane throughout my year,” she said.
She thanked the Filipinos for their support throughout her reign and even before she was crowned as the first ever Miss World from the Philippines.
“The reaction from my country and the support I received was completely out of this world and beyond my wildest imaginations.”
But as she makes her final walk as a Miss world on Monday, December 15, (Philippine Time), she said her reign was full of worthwhile memories.
She said helping in the relief operations after Super Typhoon “Yolanda” devastated the Philippines was one of the highlights of her reign as Miss World.
“I was able to help out my countrymen in ways I never thought possible, because of my Miss World title,” she said.
“I could connect to so many people and inspire and encourage help on such a wide scale and that was a true highlight of my year,” she added.
She said she is excited to host the coronation night in London since she is the first reigning title holder to do the job.
She said it is not her first time to be a presenter of a major event, but she remembered that before being given the opportunity to host Miss World, she wanted to host Miss Philippines or a local show.
“Hosting Miss World, which is watched by billions of people worldwide, is something that I never expected and totally blows my mind away when I think about it,” she said.
“I am the first reigning title holder to be hosting the show so whenever history is being made there certainly is pressure,” she added.
According to her, she hopes that in five years she would be able to do “something big internationally.”
“I love to win an acting award. You have to dream big and have that goal so you can work hard for it,” she said.
The Miss World 2014 will be held at the ICC Auditorium in London on December 15 (Philippine time).

Tyra Banks on Paolo Ballesteros: he did a great job
MANILA, Philippines – Fans of Paolo Ballesteros knew it won’t be long before an international celebrity will take notice of the TV host-actor’s popular “make-up transformation” series.
After being featured in numerous international websites and blogs, Ballesteros’ ”Tyra Beks” finally reached supermodel-turned-TV host Tyra Banks.
The “America’s Next Top Model” host posted a copy of the actor’s Instagram photo showing the the 4-panel make-up transformation on her Facebook Page, which has over six million followers.
“I think he did a great job of looking like me,” Banks said.
“But maybe if he’d have used #TYRAbeauty makeup, he woulda been more successful,” she added in jest.
The photo series first showed Ballesteros smiling and with no make-up on while the next three panels had him already made-up and looking like Banks. The wig and his “fierce” pose sealed the deal.
The re-post has had around 105,000 likes as of Sunday 10 a.m. It has also been shared more than 3,000 times.
Many Filipinos commented and congratulated Ballesteros for his feat. While others agreed that “imitation is the best form of flattery.”
Ballesteros’ original post on his Instagram account received 19,500 likes already. His other works have received likes almost double that number.
Make-up transformations trended online this year and took a funny twist when people tried to pull off unbelievable transformations without success. Some just posted their photos as they pretended to apply make-up then post an actual photo of a celebrity for the last panel.
Ballesteros, on the other hand, used his painting skills to actually achieve the look of American celebrities.
It was earlier revealed that he paints and is a great grandson of national artist and painter Fernando Amorsolo.

No wax, just water
Women who’ve gone through a lot of lipsticks and glosses can tell how waxy their lip product is after drinking water. When water comes in contact with an extremely waxy lipstick, you’re left with an uncomfortable feeling as the lipstick components—particularly wax—are broken down by the water.
At a glance, Dior’s latest hybrid lip color, the Fluid Stick, looks like the regular Dior Addict lipsticks, except for a transparent cap showing off the lipstick’s shape and shade. However, the knob at the end of the tube unscrews to reveal a wand and color applicator.
The optical illusion created by the tube is intentional, an echo of the characteristics of the brand’s new formula.
The Fluid Stick eschews wax—a staple base for most lip color—completely, using water instead as base for the intense pigments encapsulated in gloss beads. The advantage of using water instead of wax is that you won’t get the weighed-down feel typical in waxy formulas.
Because the Fluid Stick is water-based, applying it for the first time results in a shiny and wet glossy texture on the lips. But once the water evaporates, the pigment sits on the lips comfortably. You’d feel like you’re not wearing anything at all.
Even though it’s water-based, the pigments are not sheer. One coat is enough for vibrant and intense coverage.
To make application easier, the tip of the applicator is shaped like a brand-new lipstick’s tip, allowing you to contour lips easily and to enable you to apply the product mirror-free (every woman should learn how to apply lip color without a mirror).
The lightweight formula is perfect for our hot weather, and for those going to the beach (applying an opaque lip color helps protect lips from sunburn).
Fluid Stick comes in 16 shades, with names inspired by memorable couture pieces from Dior’s rich fashion history. Because coral is always a staple during summer, try Aventure, a pure coral that goes well with all skin tones. For those who prefer a bold hue, try Pandore, categorized as a pure and flamboyant red (it’s also what Dior Addict model Sasha Luss is wearing in the ads shot by Steven Meisel). If you want to stay on trend, Wonderland is a fuchsia that echoes one of the year’s trend colors.
Dior is available at G/F Rustan’s The Beauty Source, Shangri-La Plaza.

Will ‘Kimye’ be the death of Vogue?
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West couldn’t be happier that they finally got their Vogue cover. As for the rest of the world—not so much.
Did the magazine sell out?
When news broke that Anna Wintour just granted Kim Kardashian’s wish by putting her and fiancé Kanye West on the cover, some thought that this was simply some April Fools’ joke. And when the Internet finally came around to the fact that “Kimye” had indeed landed the cover of the world’s most prestigious fashion magazine, readers did not take Wintour’s decision lying down.
The reaction was instant and vicious. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar’s tweet, “Well… I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???” was “favorited” and retweeted thousands of times.
And thanks to the magic of Photoshop, retribution against fashion’s elite magazine has been laughable. Celebrities like Seth Rogen and James Franco, and even Kermit and Miss Piggy have swapped out Kimye—fans even deemed such spoof covers a vast improvement over the original.
And despite the bride- and groom-to-be being given the “Vogue treatment”—photographed by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and wearing Lanvin and Saint Laurent, respectively, in a mock-wedding photo pose—the outrage has not been limited to Twitter. Vogue’s Facebook page has been flooded with hundreds of seething messages and comments. Said one: “I’m sick and tired of your posts about Kim Kardashian, that’s why I will unlike your page. You were a magazine with a serious status. Now you remind me of Hello! Magazine (which is better ’cause it’s cheaper for what it offers). Go back to designers, artists, actors and models and maybe I’ll re-like you. Tired of D class reality hookers.”
Added another: “Seriously Vogue??? You consider this stylish??? What is happening to Vogue!!!”
The idea of Vogue, and what it represented, is a concept that the magazine invented. Being a reader myself of the magazine for many years, Vogue has a reputation of featuring only, shall we say, in a more polite fashion, A-list stars on its covers. You know, the supermodels, the Oscar-winning actresses, the Grammy-winning singers and pop stars who have graced the covers of Vogue have trained loyal readers to instinctively note what is and isn’t Vogue.
Kimye, most especially Kim, doesn’t exactly fit into these groups. From her sex tape scandal past to her self-promoting present, she’s a vulgar reality show star who basically represents everything that isn’t Vogue. Putting her on the cover, with Kanye peeking from behind, is an obvious branding faux pas.
Question is, did Wintour make the right decision, or will it lead to a mass exodus of dismayed loyal readers?
The criticisms from readers shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, including Wintour. If you read Wintour’s editor’s note, she already anticipated the flak, and any rumors of ill will between fashion’s gatekeeper and the talked-about couple have been crushed, according to Wintour’s letter from the editor.
She said: “Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir
things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it. I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?)… As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue’s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”
While it’s unlikely that putting Kim Kardashian on the cover will put Vogue out of business, it is a prestigious brand that has been around for more than a century. It’s a move that might have not been consistent with the magazine’s branding, but it was a clever, shrewd tactic, especially for a business-minded editor like Wintour.
Kimye have about 30 million combined Twitter followers, as opposed to Vogue’s less than 4 million. In an age when the Internet is killing the print business, Wintour’s move was a strategic one to help the magazine sell more copies, which has reportedly declined by more than 10 percent since 2012.
With all the publicity the cover is getting, Wintour will surely achieve just that.
And after the collective discontent over this issue’s cover, notice that something seems to be changing with the magazine’s cover models—starting with the curvier Lena Dunham, then Rihanna, and now Kim. It’s almost as if these are signs of Vogue’s own way, and Wintour’s, I might add, of adapting to and recognizing that the business model it created in the past is no longer sustainable.
Under Wintour’s direction, Vogue, after all, has featured the likes of The Spice Girls and Britney Spears, and has been angling toward more celebrity-driven coverage for decades.
For those of you who really can’t stand Kim, not to worry. I’m betting that Wintour’s next cover subject will be someone all girls are loving right now—
someone more Vogue like Lupita Nyong’o, perhaps?

Natori reinterprets Russian opulence in Fall 2014 collection
NEW YORK–It was a soaking wet Wednesday when fashion mogul Josie Natori unveiled her Fall 2014 collection to usher in New York Fashion Week.
“This season’s collection is inspired by the richness of the Russianculture,” Natori told The FilAm.
My friend, Erno Hormillosa, and I arrived at DiMenna Center in Midtown Manhattan, pants dripping at the cuff. He offered me a fresh pair of socks, but there was no time to change. The show would begin the minute after we found our seats. After slogging along through Midtown, we joined fashion luminaries, editors, stylists and buyers who braved the slushy roads to preview Natori’s breathtaking — and should I say timely — collection.
Rich, velvety fabric dominated, with faux fur accents. She showed us how the costumes contained the modernism of the ’30s and the embellishments that Natori designs are known for.
“We have laser cuts, the beading is very clean, very sculptural and very dramatic,” she explained.
February 5 being her first runway show for Fashion Week, Natori chose
a special location: the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, home of
the Orchestra for St. Luke’s, where she sits on the board.
Natori, who was a Vice President of Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch before she opened her lingerie line more than 30 years ago and expanded into fragrance and eyewear, plays the piano.
“The House of Natori collection for this season introduces a new perspective on the romantic idea of Russia…with the transcendence of timeless folkloric themes into a modern identity,” says the press handout.
Erno, a director of fashion shows, shared his thoughts. “The first thing I noticed before the first model appeared on the runway was the choice of music,” he said. “It’s from Tchaikovsky, and it complemented Natori’s collection.”
He continued: “The designs are architectured with a touch of Asian influence, which make them so pleasing to watch.”
Erno likewise noted that a piece of jewelry worn by one of the models appeared to represent jewelry typically used by Russian royalty.
“All the clothes are wearable. The two-toned velvet and faux fur coats are a winner especially to those who are on budget,” he said. “Another interesting accessory is the arm-length gloves made of leather with a lacy pattern. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“The traditional forms and ornate embellishments found in Russia’s rich culture were particularly influential to me this season,” said Natori. I love to reinterpret ancient motifs for the modern woman and share my love of everyday opulence.”
Art direction was by Andrew Egan for CoolGraySeven; styling: Patrick Mackie; music: Coleman; hair and makeup: Shiseido; casting and production: Nisha Inalsingh; accessories: House of Natori

Stella Luna’s Fall 2013 collection is all Parisian chic as it derives inspiration from the City of Light’s stunning architecture.
Quilted leather embroidery on shoes and laser-cut suede are reminiscent of ballroom floors, while molded leather studs reflect the grand foundation stones of a period Parisian masterpiece.
The collection is a balance of modern minimalism and romantic Art Nouveau, with decorative flourishes such as crystals, fringes, and exotic materials.
Soft suede and patent leather create an interesting play of textures while delicately curved heels show strong yet sensual silhouettes.
Boots come with elegant lace-ups that continue the collection’s hit combo of demure and contemporary chic, showing the brand’s bold outlook for the go-getter Stella Luna woman.

Barcelona brand is all about color–and flowers
Confident and fresh, Desigual made its début appearance on the New York runway.
Desigual’s Spring-Summer 2014 collection radiates a passion, excitement and enthusiasm for life that characterize the brand and embodies the slogan “La vide es chula,” or “Life is cool.”
The most important aspect of the collection is color. Pastel shades have been replaced by bold and vivid colors.
The color palette ranges from classic black and white in dresses, coats and T-shirts with graphic pop art prints and contrasting block designs, to primary
colors with a hint of lace and cashmere.
The collection includes a variety of offerings like light, floaty dresses, mainly in black and featuring provocative phrases. Animal prints and galactic balls turned into squares mix baroque style and simplicity.
And flowers—lots and lots of flowers—are the indisputable queens of the romantic and bohemian part of the collection, which features long draping dresses and light jacquard jackets that best showcase the brand’s range of striking colors.
In the Philippines, Desigual is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists Inc., and is located at Shangri-La Plaza Mall and Bonifacio High Street Central.

Blast that mummy tummy away–without leaving your home
After I slaved away at the beginning of the year to get beach body-ready, all I want to do now is sleep, eat ramen and not work out. Having babies takes a toll on your body as it expands and changes, and getting older with each baby makes the slimming process all the more challenging.
Even after losing all that weight and then some, our skin quality is no longer the same as it was, and bits of fat just won’t move without some extra help.
For busy people
I heard about Slim At Home from an old colleague who told me that it was the latest venture of Happy Ongpauco-Tiu, a beautiful entrepreneur and mother I had met several years ago when she first opened the Boutique Hotel in Tagaytay.
After having children and running several businesses, Happy found herself in the predicament many career women find themselves in.
“I am in the food business, so that makes it difficult to go on a diet, especially with all the food development and the food tasting I have to do,” she says. “With all my businesses and personal obligations, I do not have the time to exercise regularly or enroll in a slimming clinic. Hence, I conceptualized this business to cater to busy people like me who, despite the lack of time, still care about staying slim and fit.”
Happy is so dedicated to her new business that customers can text her directly for any questions.
Slim At Home offers a holistic approach to slimming. Treatments need to be done in combination with a proper diet and exercise regimen. It offers personal training sessions in the comfort of your own home, where a trainer brings all the equipment and monitors your weight. That means no excuses now!
Noninvasive treatments
I tried some of the services such as the Lipocavitation. It works by using ultrasonic energy to heat the dermis and tighten the deeper layers of skin while helping initiate the production of collagen. It’s used to target fat cells in specific areas such as arms, inner and outer thighs, hips, calves, upper and lower abdomen pocket fats and cellulites.
“During exercise, the body burns fats,” explains Happy. “It is through ultrasonic technology that the hard fat eventually becomes soft fat, which in turn makes it easier to metabolize in time. It is the muscles that become firm through exercise and not the fat. After the treatment, it is normal that the fat cells are eliminated through body excretions such as urine.”
After the lipocavitation, the therapist did the Thermaslim Radio Frequency treatment on me, which she said would help dissolve fat further.
Another treatment, Cryo Therapy, is a noninvasive treatment that uses below-zero-degree temperature to tighten the skin, which is then infused with rejuvenating serums. It freezes fats in targeted areas, causing the fats to crystallize. About 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way, eventually draining out from the body through metabolism.
Slim At Home also offers Cryo Facial to rejuvenate tired skin, as well as Theralift, which also uses radio frequency technology to stimulate the formation of collagen to tighten and renew skin.
For more information, visit www.slimathome.com.ph for the full range of treatments. For bookings, contact Aileen at the Slim At Home booking line at 0917-885SLIM (7546). Or call Happy Ongpauco-Tiu directly at 0917-8901225.

Miss New York crowned 2014 Miss America
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — Nina Davuluri became the first contestant of Indian heritage and the second consecutive contestant from New York to win the Miss America pageant Sunday night.
Davuluri, 24, won the title as the nationally televised pageant returned home to Atlantic City.
She succeeds another Miss New York, Mallory Hagan, whose tenure was cut short when the pageant moved back to Atlantic City after a six-year stint in Las Vegas, where winners were chosen in January.
Davuluri performed a classical Bollywood fusion dance for her talent competition.
After the traditional frolic in the Atlantic City surf Monday morning, she will head to the scene of a devastating boardwalk fire in the New Jersey communities of Seaside park and Seaside Heights on Monday afternoon.
The pageant had pitted 53 contestants — one from each state, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands — in swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview competitions.
“This is where we belong,” Sam Haskell, CEO of the Miss America Organization, told The Associated Press. “This is the home of Miss America, and this is where we’re going to stay.”
Much attention had been given to Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, who is believed to be the first Miss America contestant to openly display tattoos. She has the Serenity Prayer on her rib cage and a military insignia on the back of a shoulder. While other contestants wore glamorous costumes and elaborately decorated footwear during Saturday night’s “show-us-your-shoes” parade on the Boardwalk, Vail wore camouflage gear and Army boots.
In a Twitter message Sunday, Vail wrote: “Win or not tonight, I have accomplished what I set out to do. I have empowered women. I have opened eyes.”
Vail made it to the Top 10 and won a nationwide voters’ choice award propelling her into the semi-finals.
Another noteworthy contestant was Miss Florida, Myrrhanda Jones, who made it into the top 5 while wearing a bejeweled knee brace. She tore ligaments in her knee while rehearsing her baton twirling routine on Thursday. Sunday night, she performed the routine flawlessly.
The pageant started in Atlantic City as a way to extend the summer tourism season for an extra weekend.

Practical beauty
September is looking like a great month for beauty. I’ve noticed that most of the products being launched are practical and easy to use. Here are my five top picks for the week.
La Prairie Anti-Aging Collection
Aging is inevitable, but there is a way to age gracefully, and this line seeks to help us do just that. La Prairie’s Anti-Aging Collection is a powerful, multi-faceted treatment system that helps intercept and prevent, renew and maintain, rebuild and rehabilitate, for any age group.
Their newest product targets the eyes and lips—the first to show signs of aging. The skin in these areas is extremely thin and therefore susceptible to damage from the environment assaults, which in time result in volume loss and wrinkle gain. I’ve also noticed that people tend to forget these areas. We moisturize our lips and apply eye cream, but do these products have SPF? I bet not.
How it works:
Anti-Aging Eye and Lip Contour Cream—A patented encapsulated amino acid complex begins working immediately to fill wrinkles and hollows in the eye area, with an action similar to “lipo-fitting.”
Puffiness and dark circles recede, while an anti-discoloration complex works to prevent future darkness around the eye with marine-derived glycosaminoglycans. As for the lips, a volume-enhancing, nature-inspired ingredient works its magic to smooth the skin around the lips, as tropical fruit acids exfoliate and stimulate for a younger, fresher look.
The result: Lines and wrinkles are filled, naso-labial folds are smoothened out, volume is added to age-related hollowed areas and moisture is replenished and maintained.
Anti-Aging Eye and Lip Perfection Porter—In this product, three innovative line smoothers work together to fill in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, while a unique light diffuser disguises other signs of fatigue and aging around the eye area.
In addition, marine and vegetal extracts correct visible aging signs, reducing the appearances of dark circles under the eyes. For the lips, a derivative of an essential plant oil and dehydrated hyaluronic acid microspheres work together to help restore plumpness, while emollients and a hydrating complex ensure lips do not flake or chap.
Shu Uemura Lasting Soft Gel Pencil and Tokyo Lash Mascara
There are so many wonderful shades of lippies to choose from that you can actually use a different shade every day, without having to repeat for a month. The good news is, when it comes to the eyes, you only need these two products to complement any lip shade.
How it works:
Their Lasting Soft Gel Pencil is true to its name. It glides on easily and stays on the whole day. What I like the most about it is it fades instead of bleeds after you have been wearing it for a while, so I don’t end up with raccoon eyes.
Tokyo Lash Mascara is perfect for those with short lashes (which I unfortunately have) and those blessed with amazing lashes. The crisscross brush catches the lashes for optimal results, as if done by an expert makeup artist. It is also long-lasting and smudge-proof.
L’Oreal Extraordinary Oil
Dry and difficult hair is a sign of aging, too. Keep this symptom on the downlow with a good hair product. I like this serum, because it gives my hair a fresh-looking vibrance, even in this country’s unpredictably humid weather.
How it works:
When used once a week, it brings out the natural beauty of your hair. Wrap hair in a warm, moist towel so the product can penetrate in-depth for a thorough hair treatment. Leave in for a half hour, and then rinse your hair in cold water to ensure that the hair scales lie flat. You may also use this before coloring the hair, before washing and quickly after shampooing.
