Portion of 605 Freeway closes for construction

Commuters hoping to use the southbound 605 Freeway between Long Beach and Seal Beach will have to find a detour Monday as the busy connector closes for two weeks because of construction.

A new carpool lane connector and additional lanes on the 405 are to be added during the closure near the 605 ramp and the southbound 405 Freeway.

Much of the traffic will be pushed to major surface streets through residential and commercial areas in Long Beach, Rossmoor and Seal Beach, officials said.

Motorists can reach the southbound 405 by exiting the 605 onto Katella Avenue on the northern edge of Rossmoor and turn right at Los Alamitos Boulevard/Seal Beach Boulevard. They also can go the other way along Willow Street in Long Beach, turn left at North Studebaker Road and then left onto 7th Street, which leads to the 405.

Another alternative is to exit the 605 at Spring Street in Long Beach, proceed to Woodruff Avenue and turn left to head to the southbound 405.

The ramp construction is part of the $277-million West County Connector project, which is aimed at creating a seamless link between carpool lanes and ease rush-hour bottlenecks on the 405, 22 and 605 freeways. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
