Tennis star Venus Williams settles fatal crash lawsuit

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Tennis star Venus Williams has settled a wrongful death lawsuit related to a fatal car crash in Florida, court records show.

Palm Beach County court records show that the case was closed Friday. Terms of the agreement between Williams and the estate of Jerome Barson, 78, weren’t included in the documents.


Palm Beach Gardens police previously cleared both Williams and Barson’s wife, Linda, in the June 9, 2017 crash that fatally injured Barson. A police report said an unidentified third vehicle illegally cut off Williams as she tried to cross a busy six-lane highway near her home, setting off a chain of events that ended with a sedan driven by Linda Barson, 68, slamming into the passenger side of Williams’ SUV.

Jerome Barson died 13 days after the crash, and his wife suffered a broken arm and other injuries. Williams, 38, was not hurt.

Officer David Dowling, the lead investigator, said in his report that video from a nearby security camera shows Williams legally entered the intersection from a road exiting her gated neighborhood on a green light. As she started to cross, a dark sedan cut her off, forcing her to stop. When the sedan cleared her path, Williams began moving forward in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia, but that put her in the path of the Barsons, who now had the green light. The Barsons’ 2016 Hyundai Accent hit Williams’ SUV at 40 mph (65 kph).

Dowling said in his report that state law required Williams to exit the intersection and that even though Linda Barson had the green light she was obligated to make sure the intersection was clear.

Williams has career on-court earnings of about $40 million, her own clothing line and endorsement deals with Ralph Lauren, Kraft foods, Tide detergent and Wilson sporting goods. She also owns a small percentage of the Miami Dolphins.

Attorneys for Williams and the Barsons didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.

Tesla with Autopilot slams into truck stopped at red light

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, United States — A Tesla sedan with a semi-autonomous Autopilot feature has rear-ended a fire department truck at 60 mph (97 kph) apparently without braking before impact, but police say it’s unknown if the Autopilot feature was engaged.

The cause of the Friday evening crash, involving a Tesla Model S and a fire department mechanic truck stopped at a red light, was under investigation, said police in South Jordan, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

The crash, in which the Tesla driver was injured, comes as federal safety agencies investigate the performance of Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving system.


The Tesla’s airbags were activated in the crash, South Jordan police Sgt. Samuel Winkler said Saturday. The Tesla’s driver suffered a broken right ankle, and the driver of the Unified Fire Authority mechanic truck didn’t require treatment, Winkler said.

There was no indication the Tesla’s driver was under the influence of any substance, and information on what the driver may have told investigators about the circumstances of the crash likely wouldn’t be available before Monday, Winkler said by telephone.

There was light rain falling and roads were wet when the crash occurred, police said in a statement.

“Witnesses indicated the Tesla Model S did not brake prior to impact,” the statement said.

Tesla’s Autopilot system uses cameras, radar and computers to keep speed, change lanes and automatically stop vehicles. The company, which is based in Palo Alto, California, and has a huge battery factory in the Reno, Nevada, area, tells drivers the system requires them to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel so they can take control to avoid accidents.

Police said they had been in contact with the National Transportation Safety Board about the crash. NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said he didn’t know whether the agency would get involved with the crash.

Tesla did not immediately respond to inquiries from The Associated Press.

The NTSB and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are investigating at least two other crashes involving Tesla vehicles. In March, a Tesla Model X SUV crashed on a California highway, killing the driver, and investigators are looking into the performance of the semi-autonomous driving system in that crash. /cbb

Bruce Jenner involved in car crash, one person dead

Former Olympic athlete and TV celebrity Bruce Jenner (aka the stepfather of the Kardashians) was involved in a massive car crash in California. According to celebrity website TMZ, the accident happened on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu around noon Saturday. Four vehicles were damaged when Jenner reportedly rear ended a white Lexus LS sedan with his Cadillac Escalade SUV. The Lexus was coming to a stop at a red light when Jenner’s car hit the sedan. The Lexus then hit a Prius and ran into oncoming traffic, and crashed into a Hummer. The driver of the Lexus died and seven others were injured.

Jenner was towing a all-terrain vehicle at that time and was reportedly being chased by as many as five paparazzi. Jenner told the police that he had not been drinking and passed a field sobriety test. He was taken into custody.

Larry Flynt’s daughter hurt in Ohio car accident

DAYTON, Ohio – The daughter of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt has been seriously injured in an Ohio car accident and is hospitalized in critical condition.

The Dayton Daily News reports that 47-year-old Lisa Flynt was ejected from her car Friday afternoon after it turned in front of a tractor-trailer. A 24-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries.

The newspaper says police searched the bar where the women were believed to have been before the accident.

Lisa Flynt lives in the Dayton suburb of Huber Heights. Her brother said doctors are trying to determine the extent of her cranial injuries.

Their father began as an Ohio strip club owner. He has built Hustler into an adult entertainment empire while championing freedom of speech rights. He was shot by a sniper in 1978 and was paralyzed from the waist down.
