Creed coming to Manila

One of the most prominent post-grunge acts that have sold no less than 53 million albums worldwide is Manila-bound to rock out their loyal disciples and make believers of the rest: Creed.

On Nov. 11, 2012 at Smart Araneta Coliseum, lead vocalist Scott Stapp, bassist Brian Marshall, drummer Scott Phillips and guitarist/vocalist Mark Tremonti collectively known as Creed will perform live their well-loved songs that have endeared them to fans regardless of shifting trends in the worldwide music industry.  Some of the most anticipated hits they racked up in their more than a decade of dominance are “With Arms Wide Open,” “My Sacrifice,” “Higher,” “What If,” “What’s This Life For,” and “Are You Ready.” Note that Creed has its own Greatest Hits compilation album—one of the few from among their contemporaries.

Of their hits, “Wide Arms Wide Open” has proved to be their biggest so far with the song eventually ending up as Best Rock Song in the 2011 Grammy Awards. The song about fatherhood that many believe has spiritual undertones, pushed the album to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide.

It was also nominated in the Grammys under the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The voice of Stapp is considered by many as one of the most compelling ones in the genre. In a review of one of their earliest performances, Stapp’s gravely but powerful voice was said to have the ability to energize a room as soon he steps up to the mic and it can fill up every available space!

And though Creed has been involved in several controversies through the years—including going into hiatus only to return stronger than before— they have remarkably weathered all these through the sheer force of their musical artistry. By the time 2011 had come, the quartet has been hailed by Billboard magazine as the 18th best artist of the last decade. One of their albums that moved 40 million units worldwide also ended up as the ninth best-selling artist of the 2000s.

But it’s not all nostalgia going for the concert in Manila. It is said that the band has started recording new material for their fifth album so it won’t be unlikely if they decide to sample some of these during the show, perhaps, even exclusively for their Filipino fans.

Here’s interesting trivia about Creed: Though regarded by many as a Christian rock band due to some of their best songs focusing on themes such as eternity and faith, the band has never claimed to be one and, in fact, was never signed to a contemporary Christian music label.  It’s just that unlike many other rock bands, Creed chooses to deal with such topics as sexual abuse, hostility and lucid dreaming “in a substantial, mature manner,” said a reviewer.

In an interview, Stapp pointed out the difference between spiritual and religious lyrics: “Religion was about ‘what not to do.’ Spirituality opens you up, sets you free.”

Rock rules

Nothing beats watching an honest-to-goodness rock concert. The latest gig that floored us for its awe-inspiring components was that of Evanescence, held recently at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The show was actually a twin-bill, with British band Bush playing a 10-song set that burned with hot musicianship.

Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale channeled his grunge roots through a no-frills, take-no-prisoners stance, howling out with passion on songs like “All My Life” and “Sound of Winter” (both from the band’s 2011 album “Sea of Memories”), “Greedy Fly” and “Everything Zen.”

The band’s dense guitar sound was a palpable element—with guitarist Chris Traynor flying high with fiery solos and, in several instances, trading licks with Rossdale.

A pleasant surprise came when Rossdale sneaked in some lines from Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime,” revealing a fondness for New Wave music.

“I’m on fire,” he growled on “The Afterlife” (another track from “Sea of Memories”), triggering screams from women in the audience. Moments into the song, Rossdale jumped off the stage and walked briskly around the Big Dome, further stoking the fans’ excitement.

We went bonkers over a blistering cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.” It had been ages since we last shouted out a song’s lyrics.

We’re glad to note that Rossdale has not lost touch of his artistic gifts, even after Bush split up not too long ago and he formed another band, Institute. The way he looked, sang, played guitar and danced like a young man made it difficult for us to believe that he’s 46. Then again, Mick Jagger is 68 (!), which just confirms our hunch that rock ’n’ roll keeps these guys hale and hearty.

It took a while before Evanescence went onstage, but the minute the band cranked it up, it seemed like the heavens growled with non-stop thunder.

“Hello, hello,” lead singer Amy Lee wailed—her banshee-like voice floating over an onrushing wave of screeching guitars and pounding percussion.

It was hard to decipher the lyrics she was spouting in the succeeding numbers, but the sound was enough to bring smiles to many a star-struck, hard rock fanatic.

It was like hearing the soundtrack of the Apocalypse—except that this wasn’t a horrific scene of doom, but rather a cathartic expression of fears that ends in joy.

Mind-boggling was the way Lee belted out the high notes without letup, even as she conspicuously took a few sips of water after a few songs.

We thought things would cool down when Lee started playing on a baby grand and singing slowly, only to give way to another round of aural assault from the band.

Later on we realized we were listening to a wonderfully crafted sound that melded classical and heavy metal—seemingly disparate genres but whose complex passages and tempo changes virtually share a common ground.

In a fitting climax, the band capped its spellbinding performance with the hits “Bring Me To Life” and “My Immortal,” sending out a clear: Life sucks, but love makes it worthwhile.

Araneta Center parade of lights kicks off today

MANILA, Philippines - Christmas continues to shine brightly at the Araneta Center with the launch of the weekly Magical Parade of Lights starting today, Nov. 26.

A spinoff from the electric parade of lights held during the Capiztahan feast in Roxas City, the Magical Parade of Lights features several floats depicting creatures of the sea lit up by thousands of flickering light bulbs in a grand spectacle that will snake through the major streets of the Araneta Center.

This shimmering pageant of lights will beam a Christmas glow around the center and holiday shoppers will be regaled by drumbeaters and street dancing Christmas characters that accompany the visual explosion of electric lights. The Magical Parade of Lights is also reminiscent of the Main Street Electrical Parade, famous for its long run at Disneyland until 1996. Just like its Disney counterpart, the parade features floats covered in thousands of electronically controlled lights blinking in sync to music.

The Magical Parade of Lights is just one part of the menu of Christmas activities lined up at the Araneta Center this season. After last week’s traditional Christmas tree lighting, be serenaded by the different chorale groups as they sing your favorite Christmas carols every day until December 31 at Farmers’ Plaza, Ali Mall, and Gateway Mall. Marvel at the weekly fireworks display. Also, be sure to watch Disney on Ice “Let’s Celebrate” which will be shown from December 25 to January 3 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum. For ticket inquiries, call 911-555The Magical Parade of Lights at the Araneta Center is co-sponsored by the Meralco and the Araneta Group. It is scheduled on Nov. 26, Dec. 3, 10 and 17.
