INDIANAPOLIS – Police say at least five teenagers have been wounded by gunshots, including two in critical condition, after someone opened fire in Indianapolis.
Police say the shots rang out last night near the popular Downtown Canal on the west side of the city shortly after 10 p.m. The canal with its pedestrian pathway and restaurants dotting the area is a popular gathering place and had been thronged during the St. Patrick's Day weekend.
Police say patrolling officers were already downtown and had gone to check on a report of young people fighting when they heard gunfire nearby.
The police statement reported no arrests and made no mention of initial media reports suggesting the gunfire had come from a car or that a vehicle had been stopped.
The statement said a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were both in critical condition
