E-cig giant Juul to pay $22.5 million in underage lawsuit

LOS ANGELES — E-cigarette firm Juul has agreed to pay $22.5 million in a US lawsuit that alleged the company deliberately targeted teenagers and lied about how addictive its products are, Washington state's attorney general said Wednesday.

The company, whose wide range of exotic flavored vapes -- including mango and creme brulee -- made it a byword for e-cigarettes in the United States, did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to rein in its advertising.

In the latest such multi-million-dollar suit it has settled with a US state, Juul Labs agreed to pull commercials that appeal to young people, including on social media. It will also work to ensure stores in the state are not selling its products to anyone underage.

"Juul put profits before people," said Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who brought the suit in 2020.

"The company fueled a staggering rise in vaping among teens. Juul’s conduct reversed decades of progress fighting nicotine addiction.

"Today’s order compels Juul to surrender tens of millions of dollars in profit and clean up its act by implementing a slate of corporate reforms."

A Juul spokesperson told AFP, "this settlement is another step in our ongoing effort to reset our company and resolve issues from the past. We support the Washington State Attorney General’s plan to deploy resources to address underage use, such as future monitoring and enforcement."

This official added: "The terms of the settlement are consistent with our current business practices and past agreements to help combat underage use while offering adult smokers access to our products as they transition away from combustible cigarettes.”

E-cigarettes heat up a cartridge of liquid containing nicotine and other toxins into an aerosol. The user inhales the resulting vapor, mimicking traditional cigarettes.

Proponents of vaping say it is less harmful that traditional tobacco, though the science is not clear. The World Health Organization says using neither is the best course of action.

Opponents say the sweet-tasting flavors are appealing to young people, and the companies peddling them are -- knowingly or otherwise -- getting a whole new generation of people hooked on nicotine.

Washington's suit claimed Juul "flooded social media with colorful ads of young-looking models in fun poses that mimicked many of Big Tobacco’s ad campaigns.

"At the same time, Juul pushed fruit and dessert flavored products such as mango and crème brulee."

By the end of 2018, Juul had more than 70 percent of the US market for e-cigarettes.

"Much of this was due to its popularity with teens, evidenced by the skyrocketing use of e-cigarettes among teenagers," the attorney general said.

Until 2018, Juul's packaging did not disclose that products contained nicotine, the suit said, despite their having up to five times the level found in similar products.

The settlement announced Wednesday is the latest to involve a lawsuit claiming Juul was marketing its products to children.

Last year, it agreed to pay Arizona $14.5 million and pledged not to target youngsters in the state. Months earlier it said it would pay North Carolina $40 million, but dd not admit liability.

The company is facing similar suits by other states, including New York and California, Bloomberg News reported.

Meta rolls out parental supervision tools on Instagram

Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc will allow parents to track how much time their children are spending on Instagram and will soon roll out parental supervision features on Quest virtual reality headsets, the company said.

The new parental controls are part of Meta's promise to protect children using its social media apps, after a whistleblower leaked internal documents that showed the company was aware that Instagram caused body image problems for some teenage girls.

The uproar resulting from the leaked documents led to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, testifying before Congress in December, where he was grilled about children's safety online.

The Instagram supervision tools will be available in the United States beginning Wednesday and will roll out globally over the coming months, Meta said.

Parents will be able to view what accounts their children follow and can set time limits for how long their kids spend on the app.

In May, Meta will launch a dashboard that includes supervision tools for its Quest headsets and will automatically block teens from downloading age-inappropriate apps on Quest.

Parental supervision on both Instagram and Quest will require consent from teens, Meta said in a blog post.

The company added it plans to eventually allow parents to oversee their kids' activities across all of Meta's services from one central place.

Woman poses as 16-year-old boy to lure girls, may have victimized up to 50 teens

A woman who posed as a 16-year-old boy in social media to deceive girls has been sentenced to imprisonment of eight years, in the United Kingdom. The woman was found guilty of sexual assault and the police are trying to get in touch with at least 50 other supposed victims.

The 21-year-old Gemma Watts used social networking sites such as Snapchat and Instagram to pose as Jake Waton, as per The Telegraph on Jan. 10. Some of Watts’ victims, ranging from as young as 13 to 16 years old, have reportedly attempted self-harm and are experiencing instability in their mental health due to the whole ordeal.

The woman who lived with her mother in North London apparently traveled all around the country via train to meet up with her victims. Watts disguised her female appearance by tying her hair into a bun and hiding it under a baseball cap. She also wore baggy bottoms and a hoodie when meeting up with her victims in their family homes.

Watts pleaded guilty to seven out of the eleven counts of sexual assault charges, according to the report. Some of the victims identified by the authorities are a 13-year-old girl, two girls aged 14, and a 16-year-old.

After her arrest, Watts told the authorities that she only saw posing as Jake as a game, The Guardian reported on the same day.

“I was only trying to cheer them up,” Watts was quoted as saying.

Judge Susan Evans stated that elements of Watt’s behavior were predatory in nature and that the girls Watts targeted were vulnerable, as some had previously been bullied or had low self-esteem. She was also convinced that Watts has a low intelligence quotient and had issues about her own sexuality, as per report.

The authorities are urging Watts’ other victims to come forward. Many of her victims only realized they have been tricked by Watts after her case was made known to the public. Cha Lino/JB

Student dies while running laps as punishment for being late

A 14-year-old student died after collapsing while running around his school’s field, as punishment for coming to class late.

The boy, identified as Fanly Lahingide, arrived in his school in Indonesia 25 minutes late last Tuesday, Oct. 1, as per Tribun News via AsiaOne last Friday, Oct. 4.

Lahingide, along with five other friends who also came to class late, were allegedly made by their teacher to run laps around their school’s field. Lahingide collapsed mid-run during his second lap.

Following his collapse, Lahingide’s mother (unnamed in the report), 46, received a call saying that he fell unconscious.

Lahingide was immediately brought to a hospital. The boy was declared dead at 8:40 a.m. after attempts to resuscitate him turned unsuccessful.

The boy was not known to have any history of medical conditions, leaving authorities still unable to identify cause of death. As per report, an autopsy is set to be carried out at Bhayangkara Hospital.

Recalling how Lahingide had breakfast at their home earlier that day, his mother said in the report, “I never thought this morning would be the last time I get to see my son.”

“I hope no other child has to experience this,” she added. “The police must investigate this incident and punish the teacher accordingly.”

Police told the news outlet that the victim’s family will file a case against the teacher who allegedly made the boy run laps. As per report, the family expressed that they disagree with the teacher’s actions. Ryan Arcadio/JB

Too much screen time is no. 1 reason for teenage sleep problems, says new survey

According to a new poll, nearly half of United States parents say their teens experience regular sleep problems, with many believing that too much screen time is to blame.

The C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan questioned 1,018 parents with at least one child aged 13 to 18 years old on their child’s sleep habits, asking what they think may be causing sleep disturbances.

Nearly half of the parents (43 percent) reported that their teens have problems falling asleep at night or wake up in the night and struggle to get back to sleep.

Of these parents, around 25 percent said their teens experienced these sleep problems one to two nights per week, and 18 percent reported that their teens struggle with sleep three or more nights per week.

As to what is causing sleep disturbances, using electronic devices like social media was the number one reason given by parents, reported by 56 percent of those surveyed.

Homework and other activities causing irregular sleep schedules was the reason given by 43 percent of parents, while 31 percent say teens worrying about school is affecting their child’s shut-eye, and 23 percent say it is due to worrying about their social life.

Many parents added that they have tried a number of different strategies at home to improve sleep, including reducing caffeine intake in the evening, turning off electronics and cell phones at bedtime, and natural or herbal remedies, which were also the top recommendations given when parents consulted a doctor about their child’s sleep problems.

More than a quarter of parents (28 percent) also reported that their teens used some type of medication to remedy the problem.

“Parents whose teens continue to have frequent sleep problems, despite following recommendations for healthy sleep hygiene, may want to talk with a health care provider, particularly when considering which type of medication to try,” says poll co-director Sarah Clark, M.P.H. “Inadequate or disrupted sleep can have long-lasting health effects that go beyond moodiness and irritability for teens.”

“Sleep-deprived teens may have difficulty concentrating in school and those who drive have an increased risk of auto accidents. Inadequate sleep has also been linked to health problems ranging from obesity to depression,” added Clark. JB

Pope Francis tells teens ‘happiness not an app’

VATICAN CITY — Happiness is not an app you can download on your mobile phone, Pope Francis told thousands of teenagers on Sunday at a mass to mark a weekend dedicated to youth.

“Freedom is not always about doing what you want. In fact it is the gift of being able to choose the right way,” he said in a homily punctuated by regular bursts of applause from the crowd on a packed St Peter’s Square.

“Your happiness has no price. It cannot be bought and sold: it is not an application you download on a mobile phone. Even the latest version cannot help you to grow and become free in love.”

An estimated 70,000 teenagers were in Rome for a weekend of events to celebrate Francis’s Jubilee year dedicated to the theme of mercy.

In a surprise move on Saturday, the 79-year-old pontiff heard confessions from 16 of them and a video message from him was broadcast at a rock and rap concert in the Stadio Olimpico.

One of the teenagers chosen to confess to the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics said she had been trembling as she approached the chair on which the pope was sitting in St. Peter’s Square.

“But as soon as I sat down I had the feeling of being next to a normal person rather than the pope. Francis is really one of us,” Anna Taibi, 15, told La Repubblica newspaper.

The Sicilian teenager said she had been touched by Francis’s tenderness as he listened to her confession.

“I expected him to give me a penance … instead he absolved me and let me go.”

The importance of mobile phones to contemporary teenagers was also reflected in Francis’s message to the concert.

Clutching an iPhone, he told his audience that living without Jesus was like not having any signal. “Always be sure to go where there is a network: family, parish, school,” he said.

Shave, wax or laser–how to deal with underarm hair

Hi. I’m wondering if you can help me. I’m 16-years-old and suddenly hair is growing where it shouldn’t (below my underarm, almost next to my breast). Can I shave it? I’m scared that if I do it will get worse! Do you have any advice? Also is it normal to grow hair there?

ELLA

Before anything else, there’s no need to worry or panic. What you are experiencing right now is perfectly normal. Being a teenager means going through many changes—both physically and emotionally. It seems like your body has changed practically overnight, and yes, that might include hair growing in areas where they didn’t grow before. The body you once knew has begun to change, and it will continue to change in time.

Before you do anything drastic, you must know that your underarms are actually very sensitive. They have a weaker barrier function than the skin in the rest of our bodies. We also tend to sweat more in that area which makes it prone to bacteria (of course, you already know to use an anti-perspirant/deodorant to remedy this). The reason why I mention all these is to remind you to be gentle with your underarms, and properly care for it so that it doesn’t darken or get irritated.

Now, with regards to your question of whether or not you should resort to shaving: There are pros and cons. The advantage of shaving is that it is quick and relatively easy. The downside to this is that hair grows back in just a day or two, and over time it can cause ingrown hairs, darkening of the underarms (due to razor burn or friction—we tend to remove 1/3 of our skin when we shave) and if you’re not careful, get nicks and cuts.

I wouldn’t recommend shaving your underarms unless it was absolutely necessary (say, you had to wear a sleeveless top or swimwear and had no other means to remove the hair but with a razor). Like I said, it is the quickest way to remove unwanted hair but it can make the area unsightly in time .

Not to worry though, there are other ways to go about removing hair on your underarms. These may take a bit of an effort (and may cost more than a razor), but will definitely produce better results.

Get a wax. Though you may find do-it-at home waxing kits at your nearest drugstores or department stores, I still suggest you go to a professional to get this done. There is a proper technique for waxing that you might not be able to do on your own.

In this case, a waxing technician will know exactly what to do, and will leave your armpits smooth and hair-free for a good week and a half to two weeks. Another plus is that hair that is waxed tends to grow back less dense than before, and will be less painful the next time you go for a wax.

Go for laser hair removal. This procedure used to be quite expensive, as the technology was still new a few decades ago. But now, practically every dermatology clinic and aesthetician center offers this, at an affordable price or payment scheme. This uses laser beams to literally zap away underarm hair, until it finally falls off after the second or third session.

Depending on the machine used, it can feel something like a quick slap on the skin to absolutely nothing. Results can be seen in about five to six sessions. Of course, being that you’re only 16, you will probably need permission from your parents to undergo this treatment. Some clinics may need to wait until you are 18, so check on this. This is, however, the most effective hair-removal treatment there is, as it guarantees that you’ll be hair-free (on your underarms) for life.

3 women, missing for a decade, found alive in US

CHICAGO—Three women who had been missing for a decade — two of whom disappeared as teenagers — were found alive in a house in Cleveland, police in the US state of Ohio said Monday.

The dramatic discovery drew hundreds of cheering people to the usually quiet, residential street to celebrate that girls long feared dead were very much alive.

The details of the trauma they may have suffered in captivity were not yet known, but it appeared that at least one of the girls had borne a child during her captivity.

A neighbor spotted Amanda Berry screaming for help on Monday afternoon.

“I heard screaming… And I see this girl going nuts trying to get outside of the house,” Charles Ramsey told the local ABC affiliate.

“I go on the porch, and she said ‘Help me get out. I’ve been here a long time.’”

Ramsey said he tried to get her out through the door but could not pull it open, so he kicked out the bottom and she crawled through “carrying a little girl.”

Berry went into a neighboring home and called police, begging them to come as soon as they could “before he gets back.”

“I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been kidnapped. I’ve been missing for 10 years. I’m free. I’m here now,” Berry said, according to the recording of her frantic call to 911.

She told the dispatcher that the man who had held her captive was called Ariel Castro. When police arrived she told them there were two other captives in the home.

“All three women, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight, seem to be in good health,” Cleveland police said in a statement.

“A 52-year-old Hispanic male has been placed under arrest regarding this incident.”

Berry was last seen at approximately 7:40 p.m. on April 21, 2003, after leaving work at a fast food restaurant that was just a few blocks from her home. She was 16 when she disappeared, according to the FBI.

Her mother, Louwanna Miller, passed away in March of 2006, WKYC news reported.

DeJesus was 14 when she disappeared while walking home from school on April 2, 2004.

She was last seen at a pay telephone booth, sometime between 2:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day, according to the FBI.

Knight, who was 21 at the time of her disappearance, was last seen at a cousin’s house on August 23, 2002, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Kayla Rogers, 23, attended school with DeJesus and joined the crowd gathered near the house on Seymore Avenue where her friend had been held captive.

“They don’t find people who go missing, you know,” Rogers, 23, told the Plain Dealer.

“I’m at a loss for words.”

Rogers said she only attended one vigil over the years, because it was too painful.

Neighbor Charlie Czorb said he was stunned by how long the women had lived at the house undetected.

“This is our own backyard,” Czorba told the paper. “These girls were locked up in our own backyard.”

Berry’s cousin, Tasheena Mitchell, 26, said she didn’t believe her brother at first when he called to tell her that her best friend had been found alive.

She’d had her hopes dashed by false reports before. But this time, it was true. So she rushed to the hospital in hopes of confirming it with her own eyes.

“She was my best friend,” Mitchell told the Plain Dealer.

A friend interrupted her, “She’s alive. She is your best friend.”

“You’re right,” Mitchell continued. “She is my best friend. I’m so nervous. I’m so excited. They won’t let me inside. But I will stay here all night if I have to.”

An emergency room doctor who treated the three women said they were in fair condition and were being evaluated.

“This isn’t the ending we usually hear to these stories so we’re very happy for them,” Gerald Maloney told reporters.

US teens are getting bored with Facebook

Teens may be getting bored with Facebook and trying out other social networks such as Instagram, and the social networking giant is aware of the trend.

A report on BusinessInsider said Facebook itself noted the trend in its annual 10-K report, where it said its younger users are engaging with "other" products and services.

"We believe that some of our users, particularly our younger users, are aware of and actively engaging with other products and services similar to, or as a substitute for, Facebook. For example, we believe that some of our users have reduced their engagement with Facebook in favor of increased engagement with other products and services such as Instagram," it quoted Facebook as saying.

Such a trend may lead to "a decline in user engagement and our business could be harmed," it quoted Facebook as saying.

BusinessInsider also quoted Adam Ludwin, developer of social photo album app Albumatic, as saying most members of a focus group of people under age 25 told him they did not like how the app relied heavily on Facebook.

"They gave me the typical teenage response: 'We're bored with Facebook,'" Ludwin told Business Insider.

Even Branch CEO Josh Miller recently asked his 15-year-old sister if she still used Facebook - and learned teens are more fascinated with Instagram and Snapchat.

"She mentioned that she tries to visit Facebook as infrequently as possible," he wrote.

He also said his sister told him she only visits Facebook after she is finished with Instagram.

Not even Facebook Chat could give Facebook much help - Miller quoted his sister as saying that when one goes on Facebook Chat, "the people you don’t want to talk to are always the ones who immediately chat with you.”

But BusinessInsider noted teens are not quite closing the door on Facebook and deleting their profiles from the site.

"They're just looking to use the service less, and they're open to communicating on other platforms," it said.

Besides, it said Instagram is a property of Facebook, and founder Mark Zuckerberg "can still monetize them on mobile devices." — TJD, GMA News

Bankrate's 7 Best Cars for Teenagers

If you're a nervous parent, this list can serve as a starting point for choosing a first car for your freshly minted young driver.

Convinced the more sheet metal surrounding your teen, the better, Bankrate didn't include any subcompacts. In fact, four of the choices are mid-size or bigger by Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Because of their high center of gravity and their greater potential for roof-strength accidents, SUVs weren't considered either.

Every car had to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest rating of "good" in its crash tests. All of these cars are also IIHS Top Safety Picks.

Bankrate established a price ceiling of $23,000 for cars, having automatic transmissions but before delivery charges are added.

Each car must have EPA-estimated fuel economy of at least 20 miles per gallon in city and highway driving.

Finally, power windows, door locks, outboard mirrors and six air bags are standard in every car.

Your teen may not think some of these cars are cool, but we think safety and cost to own are cool. This is Bankrate's list of the best cars for teenagers.

2013 Toyota Corolla LE

   Price: $18,180
Gas mileage: 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway

It may not turn heads or have your teenager's friends green with envy, but for what the Corolla lacks in excitement, it's one of the best cars for teenagers. It's safe, relatively inexpensive and should get your teen through college and into that first job.

With its 132-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission as priced here, Corolla isn't the quickest on this list. And, a five- or six-speed automatic transmission would noticeably improve fuel economy. However, the engine is nearly bulletproof and will run for years.

There is a less expensive model, but the LE adds Bluetooth connectivity, iPod interface and two additional speakers to the base model's keyless entry, trip computer and four-speaker audio system.

2013 Kia Forte EX 5-Door

   Price: $18,300
Gas mileage: 26 mpg city/36 mpg highway

Value pricing and solid fuel economy put the Forte on this list. More than basic transportation, it is economical and fun to drive. Furthermore, it sports some decent exterior lines, so your teen won't feel like putting a paper bag over his head when behind the wheel.

Under the hood is a 156-horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder engine that sends its production to the front wheels via a six-speed, driver-shiftable automatic transmission.

It has more cargo-carrying space behind the second-row seat than trunk space in the Honda Accord Sedan.

Among the long list of standard features are Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, trip computer and a six-speaker audio system with iPod interface.

2013 Ford Focus SE Sedan

   Price: $19,295
Gas mileage: 27 mpg city/38 mpg highway

It may not be a Mustang, but "thoroughly modern" describes the Ford Focus SE. Your teen will like that. Redesigned last year, its styling is up-to-date. Also earning it points as one of the best cars for teenagers is a healthy amount of technology as well as a cabin that is both well-made and comfortable.

As priced here, a 2-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 160 horsepower to the front wheels by way of a six-speed driver-shiftable automatic transmission.

A lot of stuff comes packed into the Focus SE model, such as keyless entry, trip computer, automatic headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity, Ford Sync voice-activated cellphone and audio controls, and a six-speaker audio system with iPod interface and satellite radio.

2013 Volkswagen Golf 2.5

   Price: $21,095
Gas mileage: 24 mpg city/31 mpg highway

Available as either a two-door or four-door hatchback, the Golf described here is the four-door with Volkswagen's convenience package. Arguably the most fun to drive on this list, its German engineering is evident after only a few minutes behind the wheel.

As priced here, it comes with a six-speed driver-shiftable automatic transmission and the convenience package that, in addition to heated front seats, includes Bluetooth connectivity.

A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine percolates under the hood.

Sadly, even with the convenience package, the eight-speaker audio system doesn't offer iPod interface; although it has an auxiliary input jack. Standard equipment does include keyless entry, trip computer and heated outboard mirrors.

2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS

   Price: $20,995
Gas mileage: 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway

Rated a "large" car by the EPA, Sonata provides some extra bulk that may help keep your teen safe in a crash, making it one of our choices as one of the best cars for teenagers. Moreover, a grocery list of standard features belies its remarkably affordable price.

Sonata's 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine develops the most horsepower on this list: 198. A driver-shiftable six-speed automatic transmission ushers power to the front wheels.

Your teenager may feel like he's driving around in Mom's errand-runner, but he'll warm up to such features as Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker audio system with iPod interface and satellite radio.

Also standard are a trip computer and heated outboard mirrors.

2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium

   Price: $22,495
Gas mileage: 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway

Despite being one of the larger cars on this list with the extra weight of all-wheel drive, the Legacy 2.5i falls right into the middle of the pack for fuel economy.

Not only helpful in snow, but also on rain-soaked and muddy roads, all-wheel drive is almost a must-have for teenagers in the snow belt. It's standard on Legacy.

A continuously variable automatic transmission ushers production from the 173-horsepower horizontally opposed 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to the wheels.

The 2.5 Premium is priced here, but the entry-level 2.5i costs $2,200 less and includes such goodies as auto headlights, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker audio system with iPod interface. Stepping up to the Legacy Premium adds a power-adjustable driver's seat and an enhanced six-speaker audio system.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu LS
   Price: $21,995
Gas mileage: 22 mpg city/34 mpg highway

One of the mid-size cars on this list, the Malibu sacrifices a little fuel economy for some mass and enough horsepower to move it around effectively.

LS is the base version, yet it has a fair amount of the technology teens want such as Bluetooth connectivity and a touch-screen interface. Oddly, there is no iPod connection of any sort available even as an option.

Other standard equipment includes keyless entry, auto headlights and satellite radio.

Running just behind the Sonata in offering the most oomph on this list, the Malibu gets its go from a 197-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Changing the gears falls to a driver-shiftable six-speed automatic transmission.

At least 5 teenagers wounded in Indianapolis shooting

INDIANAPOLIS – Police say at least five teenagers have been wounded by gunshots, including two in critical condition, after someone opened fire in Indianapolis.

Police say the shots rang out last night near the popular Downtown Canal on the west side of the city shortly after 10 p.m. The canal with its pedestrian pathway and restaurants dotting the area is a popular gathering place and had been thronged during the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Police say patrolling officers were already downtown and had gone to check on a report of young people fighting when they heard gunfire nearby.

The police statement reported no arrests and made no mention of initial media reports suggesting the gunfire had come from a car or that a vehicle had been stopped.

The statement said a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were both in critical condition

Treat Your Teen To A Trip To The Hair Salon

Teenagers are notorious for experimenting with their hair (as most of us will probably remember), and if you have a daughter, niece or goddaughter who is starting to try out new things, why not take her for a girls’ day out the hair salon? Camberley is easy to reach from Woking, Bracknell and even Basingstoke, and has a good range of hairdressers for you to choose from.

Taking your teen to the hairdressers is a great way to allow her to experiment with her hair without having any disastrous results such as at home colouring or fringe trimming and so on! You could take her as a treat for her birthday, and a joint hair appointment is also a great excuse for some girly bonding time together. When you’re looking for a hair salon, Camberley has a great range to choose from – look for somewhere new that has a sumptuous and sparkling interior to really get your teen excited. Professional hair products are also good to look out for – see if you can find a salon that uses designer products to show your teen exactly how to treat her hair. You could even buy her a couple of treatments or shampoos as a treat when you leave the hair salon! Camberley is a great place for a girls’ day out, as it has a great range of shops, restaurants, and even a cinema for you to visit after you’ve been to the hair salon. Camberley also has a range of beauty salons that you could visit – for the ultimate day of pampering, why not book yourselves a manicure and pedicure, or perhaps a facial – choose one suitable for teenage skin.

Before you visit the hairdressers, buy your teen a few hair magazines and have a flick through together to see what kind of style she’d like. Does she want a change of colour, or a different cut? (Or both?) Try and find some pictures to take with you to the hairdressers, so that she can show her stylist the look that she’s after. Her stylist should then have a consultation with her about her hair type, the maintenance that may be involved with the style she wants, and the results that she can expect. This is a great way to help your teen learn about her hair type, and what kind of styles will suit her hair and face shape. Remember that teens are often much more likely to listen to a professional than to parents on this matter. You can have an appointment at the same time as your teen, so that you both leave the hairdressers with shiny styled hair! Do think about booking some activities for after you leave the hair salon – Camberley has a good range of restaurants where you could make lunch reservations, or you could book tickets to the cinema. Alternatively, you could just hit the shops and treat yourselves.

Hair and beauty treatments are great for bonding with your teen and can be a real treat for both of you – they can also be highly education for her, and may help to avoid any at-home treatment horrors.
