Small tsunami observed after M6.8 quake hits off northeast Japan

TOKYO — A minor tsunami 10 centimeters high hit Japan’s northeastern coastline on Wednesday night, after a strong earthquake rocked the region at 6:09 p.m.

The epicenter of the magnitude 6.8 quake was 210 kilometers off Kushiro, Hokkaido. It was 26 kilometers from the ocean floor, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The quake registered 4 in Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

The agency had initially said the tsunami could be as high as 50 centimeters, but U.S. monitors in Hawaii said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat.

There were no reports of damage at nuclear facilities in the area, Kyodo news agency said.

The meteorological agency also warned the tsunami could reach the Kuril islands, off Hokkaido, which Russia has controlled since Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II.
