Buffett partner says ‘ashamed’ for missing Google boat
OMAHA — Charlie Munger, business partner of billionaire Warren Buffett, said Saturday the two are “ashamed” of not having invested in Google, which has become one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway empire, of which Munger is vice president, recently took a stake in Amazon and has a $40 billion stake in Apple, but has generally steered clear of the technology sector.
“We are ashamed,” Munger, 95, told a shareholder at the annual Berkshire meeting in Omaha, when asked about the absence of an investment in Google.
“We just sat there sucking our thumbs,” Munger said.
“We screwed up,” he said, without indicating whether Berkshire Hathaway aimed to catch up now.

LOOK: Bill Gates caught falling in line for burger at fast food joint
Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates proved that being a billionaire does not exempt him from falling in line to grab a burger at a fast food joint in Washington, United States.
A picture of Gates wearing a maroon long-sleeve shirt, black pants and shoes while standing in line at Seattle-based fast food chain Dick’s Drive-In, was posted by Microsoft alumnus Mike Galos via Facebook on Jan. 15.
The photo, which has gone viral, has garnered over 22,800 likes and reactions, and 18,200 shares, as of this writing.
“When you’re worth about $100,000,000,000 (about P5.2 trillion), run the largest charity in the history of the world and stand in line for a burger, fries and Coke at Dick’s like the rest of us…” wrote Galos.
Galos then took a swipe at President Donald Trump: “This is how real rich people behave unlike the gold toilet seat wannabe poser in the White House.”
In the comments section of his post, Galos explained that he only posted the photo but that it was taken by another Microsoft alumnus on Jan. 13. The unnamed ex-employee shared the photo to a closed Microsoft alumni board. Galos also said he often runs into Gates at another local burger chain which the billionaire frequents.
“Do you know if he reacted, or if he knew his picture was being taken?” one commenter asked. Galos replied: “No idea. Bill’s not big on attention but is generally friendly and understands he’s a bit of a celebrity. ”
In response to Galos’ criticism of Trump, one netizen, Eileen Prager Perry Schwartz, suggested Gates run for the presidency. “I think he’d consider it a demotion from running the foundation,” was Galos’ reply.
One commenter, Joan Sewall, praised Gate’s humility.
Another netizen, Jody Allan Dobis, compared Gates to a former U.S. president, also known for his modesty and philanthropy.
“The Jimmy Carter of CEO’s,” stated the netizen. JB

Billionaire Rinehart’s son sought $15-M ‘sorry payment’
SYDNEY – The son of Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, sought a Aus$15 million (US$15.4 million) “sorry payment” from his mother for how had she treated him over the years, a report said Wednesday.
Iron ore billionaire Rinehart is embroiled in a legal battle with two of her four children, including son John Hancock, over control of a family trust reportedly worth Aus$4 billion.
Hancock’s request is contained in documents tendered to the New South Wales Supreme Court as part of a dispute over the trust, set up by Rinehart’s father, the late Lang Hancock, in 1988, with the four grandchildren as beneficiaries.
Rinehart was due to be in charge of the trust, which holds a 23.4 percent slice of her company Hancock Prospecting, until the youngest grandchild turned 25 in 2011. Just days before, however, she said she wanted to alter the payout date to 2068 so they did not face a huge tax bill.
Emails between Hancock, his mother and her adviser tendered in court Tuesday show how he tried to come to a confidential agreement with Rinehart before the case went to court, the Sydney Morning Herald said.
In the emails Hancock said he would agree to delay vesting of the trust for an unspecified annual salary, while criticizing his three sisters’ ability to mount any kind of challenge.
“I doubt the other girls have the intellectual capacity to read the Income Tax Act which clearly defines that CGT (Capital Gains Tax) is disregarded under these circumstances, unless I… explain it in suitable baby language for them,” he wrote to his mother.
Hancock later demanded “a Aus$15m ‘sorry payment’ direct from GHR (Gina Hope Rinehart) for how she treated me over these last 15 years”.
Three of Rinehart’s four children, John, Bianca and Hope, originally took the mining magnate — worth an estimated US$17 billion — to court over her handling of the trust, arguing that she had breached her duties as trustee.
Hope officially withdrew from the legal action on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday Rinehart took legal action against a journalist working for the Sydney Morning Herald, owned by Fairfax Media, of which she is the biggest shareholder with 15 percent.
At the request of the mining magnate’s company, the Supreme Court of Western Australia issued a subpoena against reporter Adele Ferguson, who penned a biography of the billionaire, demanding her emails, notebooks and recordings of interviews she has conducted with John Hancock since September 2011.
Fairfax reported that it appears Rinehart wants Ferguson to reveal her sources for the book, which was published last year.
