Google at 20 years has over 2,000 Doodles

Anyone who uses the Google search engine has undoubtedly come across a Google Doodle at some point. These surprising and often amusing alterations to the logo on the Google homepage are often deployed to mark anniversaries or special events.

The Google Doodle concept is almost as old as Google itself. The search engine’s google.com domain was registered in September 1997 and, less than a year later, just days before the company was officially incorporated, founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin modified the site’s logo as a way of telling users they were out of office at the Burning Man Festival. More than 2,000 Doodles have since followed.


Google put its first international Doodle online July 14, 2000, to celebrate France’s Bastille Day. More and more Doodles followed, marking events such as the 226th birthday of the ornithologist and naturalist, John James Audubon or to celebrate the ice cream sundae.


Over the years, Google Doodles have become more sophisticated, with animations (like for Halloween 2000), interactive games (e.g., the 30th anniversary of PAC-MAN) and videos (e.g., 122nd birthday of Charlie Chaplin). In 2018, Google even released its first virtual reality Doodle, celebrating George Méliès.

Who is Hedy Lamarr and why Google pays tribute to her?

Google on Monday paid tribute to the late Austrian-born Hollywood actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr by featuring her on the browser’s homepage doodle in celebration of her 101st birthday.

But who is Lamarr and why is she significant to technology?

“We love highlighting the many good stories about women’s achievements in science and technology. When the story involves a 1940s Hollywood star-turned-inventor who helped develop technologies we all use with our smartphones today… well, we just have to share it with the world,” Google doodler Jennifer Hom said.

Hom started her acting career in Germany before leaving her husband and secretly flying to Paris, where she met American producer Louis Burt Mayer.

But Lamarr, who was once dubbed as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” was eventually bored by her Hollywood acting career and developed an interest in the field of applied science, and utilized it to help the Allied forces during the Second World War.

“Lamarr’s own story reads like a movie script: bored by the film industry and feeling typecast, Lamarr was more interested in helping the Allied war effort as World War II broke out than in the roles she was being offered.  She had some background in military munitions (yes, really), and together with a composer friend, George Antheil, used the principles of how pianos worked (yep, pianos) to identify a way to prevent German submarines from jamming Ally radio signals,” Hom said.

Hom said Lamarr’s patent for “frequency hopping” laid the groundwork for the widely used Bluetooth, Global Positioning System (GPS), and Wi-Fi technologies.

Lamarr appeared in films such as Ecstacy (1933), Algiers (1938), and Samson and Delilah (1949).

She passed away in Florida in January 2000 at the age of 85 due to heart failure.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe born as Maria Ludwig Michael Mies on March 27, 1886 in Aachen, Germany. He died on August 17, 1969 at the age of 83.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is a great architech without any formal academic architectural training. Together with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, they are very well known as the pioneering masters of Modern Architecture.

Google Doodle Today: Heinrich Rudolf Hertz

Today, Google is celebrating the day with a special colored electromagnetic animated wavy Google Doodle to honor the 155th Birthday of Heinrich Rudolf Hertz who produced electromagnetic waves.

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz is a German physicist who was the first to broadcast and receive radio waves. He also developed the Hertz antenna receiver.

Valentine's Day Google Doodle

Today Google celebrates Saint Valentine's Day with a video that uses Tony Bennett’s 1951 recording of Hank Williams "Cold Cold Heart", that went number one hit on Billboard.

The Valentine's Day Google Doodle features an animated Doodle with a short love story, a young boy trying to impress a girl and give her a valentine gift and goes on to search Google to find out what best he can give to her but the girl is not impressed and continued to play with her jumping rope. Finally the young boy gives up on gifts and went back with his own jumping rope. Now the girl falls in love with him.

Robert Noyce was born on December 12, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa. Robert Noyce PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Ph.D. in physics in 1953. In 1956, Noyce transferred to California, where he co-founded in 1957, the company Fairchild Semiconductor. He researched and invented a lot in the technology part for a total of 16 inventions that was awarded to him then after Noyce went on to co-found Intel Corporation together with Gordon Moore as well as Andrew Grove.

Google honors Marie Curie’s 144th birthday

November 7, Google honors Marie Curie’s 144th birthday. She was born November 7, 1867 and died July 4, 1934. Marie Curie is best known as Madame Curie. Curie, a French physicist/chemist originally from Poland a pioneer in researching the radioactivity. She was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize.
