‘Air’ hero Sonny Vaccaro coaxed Nike into believing in Michael Jordan

NEW YORK, United States - The hero of the new movie "Air," released this week in the United States, is Sonny Vaccaro, a Nike employee who saw in a young Michael Jordan what "no one else had seen" and convinced the shoe brand to forge a revolutionary partnership.

During a 1984 meeting at Nike headquarters, Vaccaro proposed devoting all the money that Nike had earmarked to recruit future NBA players to one man -- rising sports star Jordan.

"Air," directed by Ben Affleck, traces the chaotic journey that brought about the singing of the barely-out-of-college player, even though Jordan had eyes on Nike's competitors, Converse and Adidas.

Nearly 40 years later, the Nike partnership with Jordan has grown into an empire, with $5.1 billion in sales last year from the Beaverton, Oregon-based company's Jordan Brand alone.

"I saw (in Jordan) something that maybe nobody else saw... and I bet my job that he would be the person," says Vaccaro, now 83, whose position at Nike was, at the time, under threat.

"Michael had something different. He had a killer instinct," Vaccaro says. "He was always competitive. And I don't know of another player that ever came along (like that)."

"The only one that I could put close to Michael and what he did... was Kobe Bryant," says Vaccaro, a multifaceted entrepreneur, businessman and talent scout. "Kobe had the same instincts... the same 'I don't give a damn about anything, I'm going to be the best.'"

In 1996, Vaccaro, who is played by actor Matt Damon in "Air," signed Kobe Bryant to Adidas, his employer at the time. He also came close to recruiting LeBron James to the brand in 2003.

'Paved the way'

Michael Jordan's arrival at Nike transformed the sports industry, revolutionizing both marketing and mass consumption, with billions of dollars at stake.

"That has really paved the way for corporations... to bet big on individual athletes and trend away from the team," says Thilo Kunkel, director of Temple University's Sport Industry Research Center.

Before Jordan, tennis players Stan Smith and Ivan Lendl, as well as basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, had already had their own Adidas models, as had NBA star Walt "Clyde" Frazier at Puma.

"Jordan probably got lucky and benefited from the trends that were happening already but I think he also contributed quite a bit to that trend," Kunkel says. "He accelerated it."

Until then, promotional campaigns were limited to full-page magazine ads and a few radio shows, recalls Vaccaro, who sees the marketing push promoting Jordan as groundbreaking.

"We did national television ads, and Nike made the best ads in the world. They invented it and it all worked out perfect," he says.

The imagery of Air Jordan, the brand created around the player, celebrated a charismatic athlete who was both cool yet fiercely competitive.

The ads were permeated with urban culture, the precursor of the "athleisure" phenomenon, which turned the sports shoe into a fashion accessory to be worn at all times and in all circumstances.

Although he was the linchpin of what remains, without doubt, the largest partnership in the sports industry, generating tens of billions of dollars in revenue, Vaccaro did not benefit financially.

"That's true," he concedes, "but I did okay, we made a good living, whatever. I'm happy with my life."

Nike tops estimates despite hit to profit margins

NEW YORK, United States - Nike reported flat profits on higher sales Tuesday in results that topped estimates and lifted shares as strong demand helped counter the drag from heavy discounting due to excessive inventory.

Profits for the quarter ending at Nov. 30 came in at $1.3 billion, the same as in the year-ago period while revenues jumped 17 percent to $13.3 billion.

"Consumer demand for Nike's portfolio of brands continues to drive strong business momentum in a dynamic environment," said Chief Financial Officer Matthew Friend. "We remain focused on what we can control."

In the wake of supply chain problems in 2021, retailers ramped up deliveries in 2022 but have struggled to align product supply with demand. Excessive quantities of merchandise has forced retailers to liquidate goods at low prices.

In the most recent quarter, Nike's gross margin declined compared with the prior quarter due to higher markdowns, especially in North America, Nike said.

Profit margins were also pressured by higher freight and logistics costs, as well as increased marketing expenses.

But those dynamics were countered by solid demand across most markets, including North America, where sales surged 30 percent from the year-ago period.

In China, where Nike's results have been dented by repeat Covid-19 restrictions, sales slipped three percent. However, that was better than the 16 percent tumble in the prior quarter.

Shares jumped 6.9 percent to $110.30 in after-hours trading.

Justin Bieber’s shoes sold for $62,000 at charity auction

STRATFORD, Ontario — A pair of Justin Bieber’s Nike basketball shoes has fetched more than $62,000 in an eBay auction to benefit a food bank in the pop star’s hometown of Stratford, Ontario.

Bieber’s grandparents, Diane and Bruce Dale, donated some of Bieber’s personal items to raise money for the Stratford House of Blessing food bank. The auction started Jan. 31 and closed at noon on Saturday.

Bieber’s Toronto Maple Leafs comforter sold for more than $6,000, his pillow case went for more than $3,000, and his ceiling light came in at just under $2,000.

The charity says on its website that Bieber and his mother chose to donate the items “because they were helped by us in their time of need.”

Organizers say Bieber autographed the items when he was in the area over the holidays, and each came with a certificate of authenticity signed by his grandmother.

The winning bids aren’t finalized until confirmed by eBay.

Staying active is all in the wrist

NEW YORK, New York – Want to be more active? An innovative wristband that tracks and measures everyday movement may just be what you need.

NIKE, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker unveiled NIKE+ FuelBand at an event in New York attended by seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Oklahoma City scoring champion and all-star Kevin Durant and 2011 IAAF women’s 100-meter World Champion Carmelita Jeter.

“The NIKE+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds,” said Parker. “Nike has always been about inspiring athletes, and the NIKE+ FuelBand will help motivate them in a simple, fun and intuitive way.”

Designed to be worn throughout the day, the ergonomic, user-friendly NIKE+ FuelBand uses accelerometry to provide information about different activities through movement of the wrist via a LED dot matrix display. Four metrics are available: Time, Calories, Steps and NikeFuel. Unlike calorie counts, which vary based on someone’s gender and body type, NikeFuel is a normalized score that awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup.

Users set a daily goal of how active they want to be, and how much NikeFuel they want to achieve. The NIKE+ FuelBand displays a series of 20 LED lights that go from red-to-green as the user gets closer to their goal. The FuelBand syncs with the Nike+ website through a built-in USB, or wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free iPhone app, to record activity and track progress every day. The app interface also provides encouragement and motivation as goals are achieved.

Armstrong said, “What’s great about the idea of NikeFuel and the FuelBand is the way it provides real information and numbers to show how much people are doing all day, every day. That’s what will get people challenging themselves to do more and better their own scores. It’s a tool to get people more active.”

“NikeFuel means everyone can get recognition for activities they do,” said Durant. “It provides a scoreboard for your day and gets everyone moving.”

Jeter said, “You don’t have to be an elite athlete to appreciate how NikeFuel can motivate you. It’s an easy way to get credit for activities and compare how you do with others, even if you take part in different sports.

The Nike+ Fuelband will be available to US residents for pre-order starting January 19th (5pm US Eastern Standard Time) at Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of US$149.

To use Nike+ FuelBand, the following is needed:

A Macintosh or PC with built-in USB. Mac OS v 10.4 or later, Windows 7 or Windows Vista (SP2) or Windows XP (SP2)
Internet access. Broadband is recommended.
Optional mobile app available in the iTunes App store; for updates on compatible mobile devices, visit Nikeplus.com
