Taylor Swift takes on Hollywood with concert documentary

NEW YORK -- She already rules music, so now it's on to Tinseltown: Taylor Swift's concert documentary is poised to dominate the fall movie season, challenging the hegemony of film studios and consecrating her business empire.

Swift is taking a break from her wildly popular tour that began in March -- performances will resume in November and run late into next year.

But in the meantime, the 33-year-old is hitting the silver screen: "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" is slated for release on October 13, and has already broken the record for pre-sales in the United States in one day, with $37 million in revenue.

The film could exceed $100 million in its opening weekend, said Jeff Bock, an analyst for box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"I think we could be talking about the biggest film of the fall season, which is pretty incredible," he told AFP -- even if, for now, only screenings in the United States are on the books.

Swift opted for an unconventional release, announcing it less than two months before its premiere and directly working with the theater giant AMC, while bypassing the traditional film studios.

And in a sign that Hollywood -- which is embroiled in prolonged twin strikes by actors and writers -- fears Swift's release, studios have postponed the opening screenings of several films that fall around the same dates, notably that of "The Exorcist: Believer."

According to the specialist news outlet Puck, the budget of Swift's film fell between $10-20 million.

She will share 57 percent of ticket sales with AMC, says Billboard, a similar proportion to what studios would normally receive. The remainder would go to theaters, under the deal.

"I don't know an artist today with that kind of leverage," said Ralph Jaccodine, a professor at the Berklee College of Music.

The Eras Tour currently boasts 146 dates, and some analysts anticipate it will cross the symbolic $1-billion mark, a feat never yet achieved.

According to the industry tracker Pollstar, each concert generates some $13 million in revenue, which would put the total proceeds at $1.9 billion.

'Bold'

Before her tour and film, Swift garnered significant attention -- and found resounding success -- by re-recording her first six albums in a bid to control their master rights.

The power move came in the wake of public sparring with industry mogul Scooter Braun, her one-time manager whose company had purchased her previous label and thereby gained a majority stake in her early work.

He later sold Swift's master rights to a private equity company.

The situation left Swift publicly incensed: "I just feel that artists should own their work," she said in 2019.

"She's a vocal advocate for artists' rights," Jaccodine said. "She's built her own brand."

Swift is currently worth an estimated $740 million, according to Forbes, but steps closer every day to becoming the first singer worth a billion based on her music alone.

Before her public efforts to regain control of her work, Prince, George Michael, Jay-Z and Kanye West all also fought for control of their masters -- one-of-a-kind source material that dictate how songs are reproduced and sold -- but none had gone so far as to re-record them completely.

"She has been very bold in terms of the strategies that she's been willing to pursue," said Carolyn Mary Sloane, a labor economist at the University of Chicago. "She's been willing to pursue all of these different avenues, a very kind of savvy and smart and strategic economics."

"So you might see some change from other artists."

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, for example, has said she ensured control of her master rights when inking her first contract, inspired by Swift.

Swift has sweetened her re-releases with bonus material and previously unreleased tracks -- like the 10-minute version of "All Too Well" -- to the delight of her ardent fans.

Making an event of each re-release also allowed her to promote her early work to younger fans, who were perhaps less versed in her "Taylor Swift" and "Fearless" periods.

In a similar vein, her "Eras" film will grant "people an entry into her concert" even if they couldn't afford or make it to the live show, Jaccodine said.

Other artists have released concert or tour films in theaters; "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" from 2011 has performed the best at the North American box office thus far, with $73 million in revenue.

But, according to Bock, the industry has never seen "a film like this drop at the height of an artist's popularity, like we're going to see in October with Swift."

"It sets a precedent," he said. "And I think it is something that other artists may consider now."

Bock however added: "There's maybe a handful of artists that could probably pull this off."

'Total frenzy': Taylor Swift fever grows in Latin America

MEXICO CITY -- Excitement is building among Taylor Swift fans in Latin America who have endured months-long queues, expensive tickets and, in one case, assault to realize their dream of seeing the pop superstar.

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter, who holds the women's record for most number one albums, will bring her "Eras" tour to the region from Thursday starting in Mexico, followed by Argentina and Brazil.

In Rio de Janeiro, Renan Rodrigues camped out for several nights to buy tickets for Swift's November 17-19 concerts at the Nilton Santos stadium.

The 24-year-old DJ, who performs at parties for Swifties, as the pop star's devoted fans are known, got tickets to all three performances.

But he paid a high price -- an assailant hit him on the head with a bottle for resisting an attempted robbery while he was waiting.

"They wanted to take my cellphone, and inside the case was my card from the only bank authorized for ticket sales. I just thought: they won't take my card," said Rodrigues, who suffered superficial injuries.

Tickets for Taylor Swift shows in Brazil cost between $35 and $468.

In Mexico, where young people earn an average salary of $366 a month according to official data, fans had to pay between $55 and $614.

Ingrid Cruz, founder of the official Mexican fan club, described the high cost as "abuse" and complained that VIP packages were prioritized over regular tickets.

Fans also reported problems with the platform of US retail giant Ticketmaster.

The vendor operates in Mexico as part of the powerful CIE entertainment and media group, which in turn controls around two-thirds of the local market for live shows.

Pre-sales for the four concerts in Mexico City were based on a previous registration of "verified fans" by email.

But even Joel Aguilar, creator of Taylor Swift MX, a fan site with some 20,000 followers from 20 countries, failed to qualify, he said.

Denisse Castro, 26, who has been unemployed for six months, hoped that building a credit history and obtaining a card from the bank sponsoring the concert would help her to secure good seats.

Unfortunately for her, the bank recently tightened its credit restrictions, so Castro could only afford the cheapest tickets.

In the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, a group set up camp outside the River stadium in June, five months before the concert, to ensure they have places near the stage.

"It's going to be a total frenzy," said Iara Palavencino, one of the fans, who take it in turns to reserve their spots.

Tickets sold out quickly in Argentina, despite the country's serious economic crisis.

In Chile, President Gabriel Boric, a self-proclaimed Swiftie, made an unsuccessful appeal to Swift to include his country on her tour.

And in Mexico, proving that the pop star's popularity transcends age, a 64-year-old Supreme Court judge outed himself as a Swiftie earlier this year.

"There's nothing trivial about Taylor Swift," Arturo Zaldivar wrote in a newspaper in June.

Taylor Swift makes surprise performance at gay bar Stonewall

Taylor Swift made a surprise performance at an iconic gay bar a day after releasing a song supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

Swift celebrated Pride Month by appearing at New York City’s Stonewall Inn on Friday night, June 14.

She released her new tune Thursday, June 13, called “You Need to Calm Down”, where she calls out those who attack the LGBTQ+ community.

The song is the second single from Swift’s seventh album “Lover” which will be released on Aug. 23.

Swift sang her hit song “Shake It Off” at the New York City bar with “Modern Family” actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who hosted the event.

Ferguson is working on a documentary about Stonewall Inn, where patrons resisted a police raid in 1969 and helped spark the gay rights movement. The bar is marking 50 years since the riots. HM/JB

Taylor Swift leaves lifelong label, signs with Universal Music Group

Taylor Swift announced on Monday that she is leaving her lifelong label, Big Machine Label Group (BMLG) to sign with the Universal Music Group (UMG) and Republic Records.

Swift announced the news in an Instagram photo with UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge and Republic Records CEO Monte Lipman.

“It’s so thrilling to me that they, and the UMG team, will be my label family moving forward. It’s also incredibly exciting to know that I’ll own all of my master recordings that I make from now on,” she wrote.

As part of her new contract, the 28-year-old singer-songwriter asked that “any sale of Spotify shares result in a distribution of money to their artists, non-recoupable.”

She said they have “generously agreed” to this, “at what they believe will be much better terms than paid out previously by other major labels.”

Swift noted this as a sign “that we are headed towards positive change for creators — a  goal I’m never going to stop trying to help achieve, in whatever ways I can.”

Swift also thanked Scott Borchetta, founder of BMLG, “for believing in me as a 14-year-old and for guiding me through over a decade of work that I will always be proud of.”

BMLG has been Swift’s label home since 2006. Her contract with them expired on the first anniversary of her sixth album “Reputation” last November 10.

UMG will now serve as Swift’s exclusive worldwide recorded music partner while UMG’s Republic Records will serve as her label partner in the United States.  /muf

Xia Vigor’s ‘Taylor Swift’ imitation gets Perez Hilton’s nod

Filipina-British child wonder Xia Vigor appeared on the local TV show “Your Face Sounds Familiar” on Sunday, shaking it off as none other than Taylor Swift and getting the nod of a Hollywood show-biz writer.

Vigor sang Swift’s 2008 chart-topper “You Belong with Me” and spruced up her stage allure with costume changes. Judges Sharon Cuneta, Ogie Alcasid and Gary Valenciano gave thumbs-up for Vigor’s vigorous imitation of the American pop star.

“That was such a great performance. Nasorpresa ako (I was surprised),” Cuneta told Vigor. “I like your energy tonight.”

Her impersonation made international headlines and impressed Swift’s fans and social media users. One of them was Hollywood gossip columnist Perez Hilton, who shared Vigor’s performance on Twitter. “This little girl doing Taylor Swift is everything I needed right now,” he tweeted on Monday. “The ending, though!”

Katy Perry on music tie-up with Swift : If she says sorry, sure!

Katy Perry is “open” to collaborating with Taylor Swift on a new song, but on one condition.

In a response to a fan’s curious question about whether she can collaborate with Swift on a new chart-topping single, the “Rise” singer responded by tweeting, “if she says sorry, sure!”

There has been bad blood between the two singers for years—to think that, according to E! Online, the two singers were once close buddies who attended the Grammy Awards together and praised each other all the time. In fact, Perry, 31, passionately duetted with Swift, 26, in her concert at Los Angeles back in 2010.

Sadly, their friendship turned topsy-turvy when three of Swift’s backup dancers left her 1989 world tour in 2013 to join Perry’s tour, leaving Swift in a furious mode. In a 2014  interview with Rolling Stone, the “Bad Blood” singer lamented about a fellow artist who “robbed” several members of her staff. “It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me,” Swift said.

“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift further exclaimed. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'”

Sensing Swift is throwing some shade at her, Perry posted a cryptic tweet on Sept. 9, in which fans speculated was a “swift” lash against Swift. “Watch out for Regina George in Sheep’s clothing…” she said.  Gianna Francesca Catolico

Taylor Swift, Tom Hiddleston on ‘lovers’ quarrel’?

Is “Hiddleswift” in a sulky mood due to an icy tiff?

A source gossiped to entertainment news site US Weekly that the duo, who were spotted making out on Rhode Island last June, hadn’t spent much precious time recently.

“They weren’t spending as much time together,” a source close to Swift told the news site.

“There was so much going on so it was hard making their schedules work, and they were upset they couldn’t see each other,” the insider reiterated.

Hiddleston, 35, is busy taping schedule for his upcoming film “Thor: Ragnarok” with Chris Hemsworth in Australia. On the other hand, Swift, 26, has other commitments to attend in the US. But the couple is struggling to “untangle the wrangle”–Hiddleston visited the “Bad Blood” singer on Rhode Island for a swift two-day visit on Aug. 14 before returning to Australia.

“Tom is busier than her right now, so it’s been hard,” the source added.“They’ve had some schedule issues, but things are otherwise fine. They are making it work.”  Gianna Francesca Catolico

WATCH: Tom Hiddleston ‘awkward’ in interview about Taylor Swift

“The Night Manager” actor and British heartthrob Tom Hiddleston stiffly and “swiftly” evaded questions regarding his steamy romance with American pop icon Taylor Swift.

While the couple parted ways in Australia for their solo errands, Aussie paparazzi pursued the hunk actor while he was jogging on Gold Coast. Channel Nine reporter Hayley Webb cornered Hiddleston.

“How’s Taylor enjoying the beautiful Gold Coast?” the reporter interrogated.

“I’m not going to answer that, if it’s all right,” Hiddleston responded after stuttering for a few seconds.

“What are you and your girlfriend looking forward to doing while on the Gold Coast?” she perseveringly asked again.

“I don’t know. It’s just good to be back,” he said.

In other reports, Channel 10 journalist Lauren Day tried to extract juicy scoops from the 35-year-old star.

Kanye West rants at VMAs, Miley Cyrus flashes breast

Taylor Swift won video of the year, Miley Cyrus briefly flashed one of her breasts and Kanye West ranted at the MTV Video Music Awards.

After Swift won the top prize for “Bad Blood,” Cyrus was backstage speaking and hiding behind a curtain, but one of her breasts appeared onscreen before the camera cut away. MTV said the clip will be removed from all future broadcasts.

Cyrus closed the show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with a performance, which started with the line: “Yeah, I spoke pot.”

She’s not the only one: West, who said he got high before going onstage on Sunday, gave a rambling speech as he apologized to Taylor Swift for taking her microphone in 2009, admitting “I don’t understand awards shows,” bashing MTV, and claiming he would run for president in 2020.

Swift presented West with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

“This arena tomorrow is gonna be a completely different setup, this stage will be gone. After that night, the stage was gone, but the affect that it had on people remained,” West said of running onstage during Swift’s speech at the 2009 VMAs. “The problem was the contradiction. The contradiction is I do fight for artists, but in that fight I somehow was disrespectful to artists. I didn’t know how to say the right thing, the perfect thing.”

It was just one of the dramatic moments at the awards show. Nicki Minaj called Miley Cyrus out at the MTV Video Music Awards after the 22-year-old said in an interview that the rapper was being a poor sport about not receiving a nomination for video of the year.

After collecting best hip-hop video for “Anaconda” on Sunday, Minaj told the audience: “And now back to this b—- that had a lot to say about me a lot in the press. Miley, what’s good?”

Minaj’s microphone was cut off, and Cyrus fired back with “we all know how they manipulate” words during interviews, referencing a pre-VMAs interview in the New York Times. Cyrus then stumbled over her words as she tried to read from cue cards about voting for the artist to watch award.

“I lost this award in 2008 and I was fine with it. Whatever! Because it’s no big deal. It’s just an award and I persevered,” she yelled, appearing to look over at Minaj.

She ended with: “Congratulations Nicki.”

In the recent interview, Cyrus criticized Minaj for her “pop star war” with Swift that began in July. On the show, however, that “war” appeared to be over, with Swift joining the rapper during her performance of the “The Night Is Still Young.” Both in red, Swift performed some of her hit, “Bad Blood,” and the two closed with a hug.

The beef began in July when the nominations were announced and Minaj, who had one of the most viewed videos of the year with “Anaconda,” was not up for video of the year. She tweeted that slim women easily earn top nominations and said black female entertainers don’t get enough credit for their influence on pop culture. Swift, the top nominee with 10 nods, thought the rapper was referring to her and they traded words online, but later apologized.

Swift’s wins included best female video and pop video for “Blank Space” and video of the year for “Bad Blood.”

“I know there’s been a lot of discussion about this video and what it means, but I’m just happy that in 2015 we live in a world where boys can play princesses and girls can play soldiers,” she said onstage after winning the top prize.

Justin Bieber returned to the big stage with slick dance moves to his hit “Where Are U Now” and new single, “What Do You Mean.” He was emotional by the end of the performance and cried onstage.

Tori Kelly was a vocal powerhouse during her performance of “Should’ve Been Us,” ending in a cappella to a rousing applause. The Weeknd’s smoky performance of “Can’t Feel My Face” was energetic and smooth, and even West, Swift and Selena Gomez got out of the chairs to dance to the upbeat track. And Demi Lovato brought a sexy vibe when she sang her anthemic “Cool for the Summer” outdoors with background dancers wearing bright colors that added to the song’s summer-feel.

Cyrus hosted the VMAs two years after she stole the show with a risque, but memorable performance with Robin Thicke, and a year after winning the top prize for “Wrecking Ball.” She took a selfie with people in the audience and asked them to yell: “Marijuana.”

“Ellen, you ain’t got nothing on this,” she said.

Cyrus announced at the end of the show that her new album is available online for free.

Apple bows to Taylor Swift on streaming payments

NEW YORK — Tech giant Apple late Sunday bowed to pressure from pop superstar Taylor Swift and raised payments to artists for its forthcoming music streaming service.

The about-face by one of the world’s most powerful companies showed the extraordinary influence of the 25-year-old Swift, who had vowed a partial boycott of the new Apple Music service.

Swift, saying that she was speaking up for artists afraid of upsetting Apple, had called the company’s behavior “shocking” over its earlier plan not to pay for streams during customers’ initial three-month free trial.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, said late Sunday that the company had shifted course and would compensate for streams in all stages.

Apple music “will pay artist(s) for streaming, even during (customers’) free trial period,” he wrote on Twitter.

Mimicking Swift’s earlier protest, Cue wrote, “We love you (Taylor) and indie artists. Love, Apple.”

Cue separately told industry journal Billboard that he telephoned Swift, who is in Amsterdam on her tour, after receiving approval from Apple CEO Tim Cook.

He insisted that Apple never intended to avoid compensation and had heard plenty of concern from others besides Swift, although he was moved to action after she went public.

Tough streaming competition

Apple, which revolutionized the music industry through digital downloads with iTunes, on June 30 launches its new streaming platform as customers quickly shift to such on-demand, unlimited Internet catalogs.

Swift has been an outspoken critic of streaming leader Spotify, last year pulling her entire catalog as she charged that the Swedish company compensates artists too little.

Swift early Sunday said that she would refuse to allow her latest album “1989” — by far the best-selling US album in the past year — to stream on Apple Music due to the lack of payment during the trial.

“I find it to be shocking, disappointing and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company,” Swift wrote in a posting on Tumblr.

“These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much,” Swift wrote.

Swift said that her move was in part “about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt.”

After Apple’s reversal, Swift wrote on Twitter: “I am elated and relieved. Thank you for your words of support today. They listened to us.”

Apple has not gone public with details on the payout structure, but is known to have been involved in intense negotiations with major record labels.

Prosecutors in New York and the neighboring state of Connecticut have started an initial probe on whether major labels are colluding with Apple to stop licensing content to rivals.

Swift, a young country star turned pop sensation, is signed to an independent label, Big Machine Records, allowing her greater leeway in determining her marketing.

Spotify has been especially controversial with artists as it offers a free tier, even beyond a trial period, for customers who are not bothered by advertisements.

Spotify says that it nonetheless pays back artists and has given out $3 billion in royalties since the Swedish company’s launch in 2008.

Apple plans to charge $9.99 a month after the three-month trial.

Other rivals in streaming include Deezer, Rhapsody, Rdio, Google Play and Tidal, which is spearheaded by rap mogul Jay-Z with a professed mission to support artists.

Taylor Swift, Kanye West reunite at Grammys 6 years after VMA gaffe

MANILA, Philippines—Six years after rapper Kanye West crashed Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the two were seen being chummy with each other during the 2015 Grammy Awards on Monday (Philippine time).

Entertainment Tonight reported that the two were seen clasping hands and posing for photos.

In 2009, Kanye stormed the stage and aired his sentiment on the VMA snub on Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” for Best Female Music Video as Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” bagged the award.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m [going to] let you finish — but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time,” Kanye infamously told a shocked Taylor.

During Monday’s Grammys, Kanye also poked fun at himself by repeating his 2009 VMA act as he tried to interrupt Beck’s speech for winning Album of the Year for “Morning Phase.”

However, in an interview with E! Online after the awards show, Kanye revealed that he has an issue with Beck’s win.

“I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé,” the rapper said. AJH

Single Review: “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift

“Shake It Off” is the lead single of Taylor Swift’s upcoming fifth studio-release entitled ’1989′. It is an interesting choice for a first track from her much awaited latest effort as it does not have any hints or reminders of Country music in it at all. Neither does it sound like a mature track that would have been meant for the adult-pop realm.

In fact, in this track was a chance for her to let loose, have fun, and in a sense just play along with the music co-produced for her by Max Martin, the very same renowned producer who worked on her previous smash hit studio-release ‘RED’.

I think fans of Swift will enjoy “Shake It Off” because they will get to hear her own commentaries about her fame which are not necessarily self-deprecating. Rather, they reveal that she has attained some level of maturity and can brush off criticisms, and perhaps even laugh at herself and the foibles of youth.

**********

What is the overall production value of “Shake It Off”?

You can categorize Taylor Swift’s lead single as a “bubble-gum pop” track with its bouncy beat, a synthesized-based sound, and one that has undergone a lot of mixing before it was finally released into the global market.

While there are so many artists now doing the same routine with “bubble-gum pop”, with “Shake It Off”, though, you will still know that you are listening to Taylor Swift. Plus, I do like the sampled horns featured in it and how “Shake It Off,” has a faster tempo (BPM) when compared to some of her more lighthearted songs from her earlier albums.

The track offers listeners a quick, yet enjoyable four minutes that are neither too serious nor offensive in any way. While some may question Swift’s creative direction here, this track tells me that you can’t always take yourself too seriously. Swift is aware that she will always be criticized one way or the other–there’s no way out, it seems. So, why not just have fun with it ?

Needless to say, Taylor Swift has another sure fire winner here–”Shake It Off” debuted very recently on the Number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Expect “Shake It Off” to acquire more digital sales when ’1989′–the album title from where this track was taken–will be finally released in record stores worldwide.

Thumbs Up!

Taylor Swift’s fans have done it again, voting her the American Music Awards artist of the year for a third time.
