Hagar frustrated over Montrose tribute DVD
Sammy Hagar says the estate of Ronnie Montrose is behind the delay in releasing the guitarist’s tribute show DVD.
And the frustrated singer vows that if the concert film doesn’t hit shelves soon, he’ll take action himself.
Guitar icon Montrose shot himself in March this year. He had suffered from clinical depression for much of his life, and the deaths of his uncle and dog within weeks of each other are understood to have been factors in his decision to commit suicide.
The following month, surviving Montrose members Hagar, Bill Church and Denny Carmassi fronted a memorial event that also starred Joe Satriani, Neal Schon, Tommy Thayer, Jimmy DeGrasso and many others.
It was filmed, and an early release was predicted – but it’s yet to take place.
Answering fan questions in the video below, Chickenfoot frontman Hagar says: “There were some problems with the Montrose estate people. They weren’t co-operating and stuff.
“But we filmed everything and it was great stuff. If it doesn’t get done sooner than later I’m going to just take it and do it myself.”
In other answers, the Red Rocker says he’d love to jam with Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page, he wants to write a recipe book and he tries to use social media to “make the world better.”
Asked about his plans to import sea salt from Mexico to flavour his own brand of tequila, Hagar replies: “I have these big buckets, two big buckets, and I come back privately so I have to go through the same customs procedures.
“I stick it in the corner of my airplane somewhere and they haven’t looked twice now. If they ever open that baby up you know I’m going to be detained for a while – because it doesn’t look like salt.”
Chickenfoot are planning a year without action in 2013 due to drummer Chad Smith’s commitments to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Satriani’s solo work. But the singer says he and bassist Michael Anthony might work on a project together.

Ministry guitarist Mike Scaccia dead at 47
Guitarist Mike Scaccia, known for his work with Ministry, Rigor Mortis and the Revolting Cocks, has died after suffering a seizure on stage. He was 47.
He was performing at the Rail Club in Fort Worth, Texas, last night with Rigor Mortis, and collapsed during the show. He was taken to hospital while a band member is reported to have told fans: “It doesn’t look good.” He died soon afterwards.
Vocalist Bruce Corbitt, who’d put on the event to celebrate his 50th birthday, posted on Facebook: “My brother is gone! The only reason I am who I am is because of this man. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t even be in a band. RIP Mike – the greatest guitar player I ever knew. I’m proud to say that I was always Mike Scaccia’s biggest fan, and always will be.”
The guitarist co-formed Rigor Mortis in 1983 and they released their acclaimed debut self-titled album six years later. He was invited to join Ministry as a touring member by mainman Al Jourgensen in 1990. The tour went so well that he joined the industrial metal pioneers permanently. Scaccia appeared on Ministry’s Psalm 69 and Filth Pig albums before leaving the band.
He reformed Rigor Mortis in 2003 and went back to Ministry around the same time, where he’d remained since. He’d also performed with RevCo in recent years.
Earlier this year Scaccia discussed his relationship with Jourgensen, telling Westword: “We’ve had our ups and downs together. We’ve lived through a really very long and intense heroin addiction together. We’ve survived it – we got out of it. We’re like brothers, and we have fought like brothers in the past. About four years ago, we decided no more of that dumb shit. We’re best friends, man; let’s write music together. I don’t even think we’ve had an argument for four years now.”
In the same interview he said he was looking forward to completing a new Rigor Mortis album. He was also involved in the Dusters, Blohole, Lard, the League of Blind Woman and Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters. Gibson employed him to run guitar clinics across the world.

Iron Butterfly and Captain Beyond bassist dies
Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman has died at the age of 70. He was still performing with the band who received the first-ever platinum disc for sales of their 1969 breakthrough album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. He’d also continued work with side-project Captain Beyond until the death of guitarist Larry ‘Rhino’ Reinhardt earlier this year. Dorman, who had suffered heart problems for many years, was found in his car. Police believed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Tony Iommi has reflected on his first year as a cancer victim. The guitarist announced he was suffering from lymphoma soon after Black Sabbath‘s reunion with Ozzy Osbourne was revealed in 2011. Iommi says: “What a year! Certainly not the one I was expecting. Thanks to you all for your massive help and support. It was very encouraging. I’m still working on the album and managed to play three shows – not bad given the news a year ago. I’m looking forward to next year, seeing what you think of the record and touring as much as we’re able.”
Led Zeppelin have reissued their catalogue via iTunes, remastered to make best use of the digital format. It’s a separate move from the band’s planned reissue series, expected in 2013. Meanwhile, Robert Plant has re-emphasised the thought processes behind refusing to take the band’s 2007 reunion any further. He says: “You have to be creative and imaginative and move on. The great essence of Led Zeppelin is the creativity and imagination that developed with each project. I don’t see us being a stadium act, going round and round making everyone feel great playing the hits.” [CBS]
Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has explained how the song Cut Me Some Slack was written with Paul McCartney. The grunge pioneers’ surviving members performed the track several times earlier this month alongside the ex-Beatle. Novoselic says in his blog: “Paul came in with this cigar-box guitar and started playing some mean slide on it. He said it was in D. Grunge instincts took over and I dropped the E on the bass to D. Pat and Dave got into it and the tune took shape. Paul flashed a riff and we picked it up. I busted another one out and everyone picked it up. Things started coming together. A new song was born! And that’s about it. That’s all it is – a new song by some players who have been doing it for a while.”
The last live Deep Purple album featuring Ritchie Blackmore will be re-released on January 29. Live In Paris 1975 features the iconic guitarist alongside David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and Ian Paice performing tracks including Stormbringer, Highway Star, Space Truckin’ and Smoke on the Water.
A 1969 vehicle registration document sent to Jimi Hendrix has sold on eBay for $2250. The enveloped item, addressed in type to Hendrix, was associated with a Corvette he owned at the time and is believed to have written off in an accident and replaced with a similar car. It comes with the standard California Department of Motor Vehicles statement which reads: “If you no longer own this vehicle destroy this card.” [Ultimate Classic Rock]
Classic Rock Presents Jimi Hendrix: People, Hell and Angels Fanpack is currently available for pre-order, containing the complete new Hendrix album due out next year. Find out more.
A group of scientific researchers believe successful musicians are more likely to die young than those who follow other career paths – but the chance of survival is worst among solo artists. The study was led by Mark Bellis, a UK expert of drug abuse and violence prevention. Researchers discovered that out of 1489 big-name artists famous between 1956 and 2006, 137 or 9.2% of them died young, with 39% of those deaths attributed to drink, drugs or violence. More solo artists died than those who worked in a band – In the US the rate was 23% for soloists versus 10% of band members, and in Europe it was 10% versus 5%. [New York Times]

Residential developer buys 208 acres in North Las Vegas
A Southern California residential developer has acquired 208 acres in North Las Vegas.
SunCal bought the property near North Decatur Boulevard and Elkhorn Road this week for $19.8 million, the company said Friday.
The previous owners had graded the property and installed water and power utilities but did not build any homes, SunCal spokesman Joe Aguirre said. The company plans to seek revised entitlements for the property, which is already approved for up to 1,828 residential units, he said.
Like Summerlin’s Howard Hughes Corp., SunCal develops master-planned communities by selling large swaths of land to home builders.
Based in Irvine, Calif., SunCal has done other deals in Las Vegas. From August to November 2009, the company bought 1,665 lots — 1,212 finished and 453 partially developed — across 22 valley project sites for almost $30 million.

May unveils Queen ebook
Brian May has given Classic Rock a demonstration of the new multi-touch electronic edition of Queen’s career-encompassing book 40 Years Of Queen.
The affable guitarist hosted a media session at London’s Groucho Club to introduce a wide array of functions of the digital edition of the tome, written by Classic Rock contributor Harry Doherty.
“I’m a bit of a technophobe but this version does an incredible job of telling the life that Queen led,” May informed the mass of reporters, adding proudly: “This is the best book ever.”
Many of the new features were culled from May’s own collection of band memorabilia. “I was the guy that tried to hold onto these moments as they passed. If we played Madison Square Garden, I’d keep a ticket. I also kept hold of clothes and posters, an amazing cornucopia of artefacts. Instead of leaving them to gather dust in some air conditioned storage room I wanted people to see these things and be able to play with them.”
Brian revealed that his father had drawn a map charting the route of one of the band’s early continental tours. “Click on the city names and you can even see the set-list that was played while we were there,” he smiled. “I love seeing this stuff and it’s great to be able to share it.”
May is especially proud that the interactive edition allows readers to listen to the band’s music and even purchase songs from iTunes as they progress from page to page. “It takes you as deeply into the Queen legacy as you can get,” he claimed. “Touch an album and a replica of the vinyl comes out of the page. You can see the track listing. Our first album, for instance, now has all of our original demos. This version of the book leads you directly to all of those different extras; it’s as state-of-the-art as you can get.”
In the future, however, May believes that a wealth of extra features can be built into the format. “We will be updating the content as we go along. It already has a Live section which is already extremely good, but over the coming months we will be adding material from Live At The Rainbow which can be fed into this product… you’ll be able to see it and click on it as an update. The fact that it can continue to evolve is what makes it so exciting.”
Published by Carlton Digital, the web version of 40 Years Of Queen can be bought for £9.99 from the iBookstore. Find out more.

Kiss members to fly solo in new comics mini-series
Classic Kiss characters The Demon, the Starchild, the Catman and the Spaceman are to get their own special dedicated comics next year.
Due in March, the four-issue Kiss mini-series is being produced by IDW Publishing. The first comic is dedicated to Gene Simmons’ Demon character and its storyline is inspired by the song Radioactive on Gene’s 1978 solo album.
Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer, says: “Issue one sees the Demon taking on none other than the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse, and no one draws widescreen apocalyptic action better than Angel Medina. It’s a thrill to have Angel back in the Kiss fold.”
Medina illustrated the Kiss Psycho Circus comics that were published from 1997-2000.
You probably remember that all four Kiss members released solo records back in ’78. Besides Simmons’ Radioactive, we’ve chosen three songs from the other members’ albums that could be the basis for great (well, below average at best) comic storylines.

Look, ma, a laptop and a tablet in one!
MANILA, Philippines – Tired of carrying both a laptop computer and a tablet? Then better get ready for the coming of the convertibles, laptops that have touch-screen monitors that can be bent to resemble a tablet computer.
Ricky Banaag, Intel Philippines country manager, said during the recent Intel’s year end press briefing that a lot of convertibles will hit the Philippine market in 2013.
He cited the recent Windows 8 Experience Study conducted by Intel which showed that 44 percent of people surveyed had chosen convertible laptops over tablets and normal laptops in deciding which device they would like to run Windows 8.
Windows 8 is the latest operating system of Microsoft that can run on mobile devices, tablets, and laptops. Its main feature is that it is best used with touch-screens.
“[Convertibles] have the best of both worlds, the traditional keyboard [and at the same time] a touch-screen,” Banaag said.
The convertible will be able to serve the needs of touch applications and typing applications in just one package “instead of carrying both a tablet and a laptop when going out,” he said.
In today’s world where people have more than one device for their many needs, the convertible will help reduce the need for several devices.
The results of the Windows 8 Experience Study also found that 31 percent of people chose non-convertible laptops with touch-screens and 22 percent chose tablets. Only three percent chose the traditional laptop with no touch-screen.
Several laptop manufacturers have previously announced their convertible laptops which feature touch-screen monitors that can rotate like a revolving door or can be bent completely backwards.
Banaag said that the touch-screen monitors, which are connected to the main body of the laptop through a single or double hinge, had passed extensive stress tests.
“Tablets, convertibles, and new devices will enter the market en masse, blurring the boundaries between PCs and tablets. According to Gartner, by 2015 media tablet shipments will amount to around half that of laptops,” Intel said in their statement.
“As tablets become more popular at work, people will covet improved processing power. People will look to tablets for productivity, moving from consumption to multi-tasking; placing greater processing demands on their devices,” Intel Asia-Pacific director of regional sales organization, Philip Cronin, said in the statement.
People wishing to get their hands on a convertible however, should start saving money as early as now since one could cost P60,000, Banaag said.

Up Dharma Down tests its ‘Capacities’
It took the band Up Dharma Down four years to release its new album, “Capacities.” But it gained immeasurable affirmation when its loyal fans cheered wildly while hearing the new songs played live at One Esplanade recently.
“It gets me … every time,” said vocalist/keyboardist Armi Millare, profusely thanking the more than 2,500 people who showed up at the album launch.
Event organizers had to cut the line at the ticket stall because the venue could no longer accommodate more people.
“A lot of people think that in the last four years, nothing happened … that we were sleeping in comfy, fluffy white sheets. But in reality we were doing gigs relentlessly in and out of town, and we were writing and recording songs as early as 2010,” Millare told the Inquirer.
Preview
Last year, two songs, “Indak” and “Tadhana,” were released as a preview of “Capacities.”
Millare said that the new album is the group’s tribute to the kind of music they have listened to during the band’s formative years. “We wanted to test our ‘capacities’ as songwriters, not as instrumentalists. It’s not just how guitars and drumming come together—anyone could do that. Our strength as a band is how we create songs of our own.”
Bassist Paul Yap said that producing “Capacities” was relatively easier than the first two albums. “We now know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”
He explained that the band survived the probing stage on its first album, “Fragmented” (2006), and got past the so-called sophomore slump on the follow-up, “Bipolar” (2008).
“On ‘Capacities,’ we know what songs we won’t get tired listening to,” he added.
Out of 16 tracks recorded, only nine made it to the album: “Turn It Well,” “Luna,” “Parks,” “Indak,” “Feelings,” “Thinker,” “Kulang,” “Tadhana” and “Night Drops.”
A bonus track, a duet version of “Feelings,” features Paul Buchanan of the Scottish band The Blue Nile.
Still celebrating
“This is special to us,” said Millare. “We are not done celebrating. It’s a marker that we have achieved something that we always wanted to get.”
In between their day jobs, all the members are committed to the band.
Millare and Yap write most of the songs while drummer Ean Mayor and guitarist Carlos Tañada handle the technical side of the recording process.
“Sometimes, we’d be surprised at how much the song has changed from the original, but it’s all for the better,” said Tañada, who wrote the upbeat single “Turn it Well.” He wrote it for his girlfriend as a birthday gift, and Millare rewrote parts of it until its final form.
The band members, however, do not feel confined to their respective instruments. In “Capacities,” the sense of nostalgia circa 1980s in the songs was achieved by using synthesizers and applying electronica beats.
Millare considers every song important, but her favorites are “Luna” and “Feelings.” In songwriting, she emphasized that her intention is “not to make hit songs, but songs that would strike a note somewhere,” she said.

Lynyrd Skynyrd had a Good Teacher
Lynyrd Skynyrd have released a lyric video for Good Teacher, taken from recent album Last Of A Dyin’ Breed. View it below.
The band – who played an exclusive 30-minute set to invited guests at Classic Rock’s eighth annual Roll Of Honour awards night last month – got their name from a teacher called Leonard Skinner.
But given the lyrics in the song: “He showed me the ropes, good whisky and smoke, and how to tell a dirty joke” they’re probably not talking about Mr Skinner.

6 steps to closing a credit card
Thinking about closing a credit card account? Closing a credit card account can prevent you from using too much credit, reduce your risk of identity theft and make keeping track of your finances easier. However, it can also have a negative effect on your credit score.
Part of your credit score is based on how much of your credit you actually use. When you close an account, especially a larger account, your credit-utilization ratio (CUR) will be affected and your score could go down. In addition, if the card you're closing was the first credit card you ever got, it could shorten the length of your credit history, which can also hurt your score.
Too many cards
That said, tell me if this situation sounds familiar: You have to buy a dress or a suit for a friend's wedding. It's tough financially, but it's their wedding -- a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. You pick one out and when you get to the cashier, he offers you an additional 20 percent savings if you sign up for their store credit card. Plus, with the card, you get free alterations. Done.I've had a lot of friends get married recently.
Maybe you've encountered this situation too, and now you have too many cards for specific stores and would like to simplify your credit life a bit. Or maybe a card with an annual fee has outlasted its welcome in your wallet. In these cases, closing a card (or cards) can be an appealing notion. Here are six steps for getting it done:
1. Target the card that costs you the most first
If you are going to close multiple cards, close just one account at a time. Closing too many cards at once can cause your credit score to drop sharply from a snowball effect of the reasons mentioned above. To determine which card you should close, calculate which one is costing you the most -- whether through the high annual percentage rate (APR) you're paying on its balance or the steep annual fee that's drawing nearer -- and make it your goal to close it first. Be sure to factor in any rewards you get from your cards, however, to make sure you're conducting a full analysis.
2. Pay the balance in full
This may seem obvious, but I've chosen to mention it so there's no confusion. Trying to escape a card that still has a balance is a terrible idea for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the damage it will wreak on your credit report. If you can't pay the balance in full, consider transferring the balance to a card with a lower APR.3. Declare your intentions with your issuer
I always prefer to try to cancel a card over the Internet first. It avoids the sales pitch from the person on the other line when I try to cancel. But if need be, call your credit card company and stay firm when they try to keep you as a customer. Remember your reason for calling.4. Send a written confirmation of cancellation
Keep a copy for your records as well. This will give you more leverage if the account appears open after your verbal cancellation.5. Dispose of the card properly
Once you're certain that the account is closed, cut up your card and dispose of it in multiple loads of trash.6. Keep an eye on your credit report
If any errors, occur, it's your responsibility to correct them. Keep a tab on your score. It may take a few weeks for any changes to occur, but watch carefully to see if cancelling your card has a negative effect. If it does, weigh carefully whether you want to close any other accounts.Whether you should close a credit card account can be a tough decision. Do the benefits -- which sometimes are only psychological -- outweigh the potential damage to your credit score? That's a call only you can make. But if you've struggled with overspending in the past, it is one way to reduce your temptation and simplify your finances.

Next step for Manny Pacquiao uncertain after being floored by Marquez
The first reporter to ask a question at a Manny Pacquiao post-fight press conference never had to search for a topic.
Pacquiao was undefeated for a seven-year stretch until last June and arguably was one of the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighters. Like clockwork following each of his dominating victories, one of the first questions asked of promoter Bob Arum always involved a potential mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
After Saturday night, however, the window to create that fight — a showdown several fans have long said is the only one they’d be interested in seeing — has soundly closed.
Pacquiao’s future in boxing is uncertain after being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in the sixth round of their welterweight fight. As he lay on the canvas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena following a knockout — a powerful right hand from the Mexican Marquez with one second left in the round — everything quickly changed when talking about Pacquiao’s next match.
His future, you see, might not include another fight.
The 32-year-old has repeatedly said his career would only last a few more fights, and considering how his performances have gradually declined in recent outings, you can easily assume it’s time for Pacquiao to call it a career. He’s just not the same fighter who enjoyed the seven-year winning streak in placing his name among the all-time best. He lacks punching power and hasn't enjoyed the same dominance as his glory years. The streak was snapped in June when he dropped a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley despite dominating the fight.
Saturday, there was no question: Pacquiao was out cold after a solid right, giving Marquez the victory he long desired. It was the fourth meeting between the rivals.
Not only did the blow by Marquez, whose knockout capped an exciting back-and-forth fight where Pacquiao led 3-2 entering the decisive sixth round, end Pacquiao’s night; he may have also closed the books on Pacquiao's career. Pacquiao was transported to UMC for precautionary observation following the fight and was released early Sunday in good condition, according to reports. He wasn’t able to attend the press conference
His only communication with the media came through his handlers. He said he wanted to fight again but first planned on a break to recover.
“I will take some time off and come back and fight,” Pacquiao said, relayed to media by his team.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, said he wouldn’t hesitate telling Pacquiao to call it a career if he wasn’t in top form when they return to the gym. Pacquiao, who reportedly earned $26 million for the fight, likely is financially set for life. His plate has become overly crowed in recent years with being a Congressman in his native Philippines, among other distractions, which several say led to his decline.
Despite all this, Pacquiao was beating Marquez in the early rounds.
He won the first two rounds on all three judges’ scorecards but was knocked down by Marquez in the third round to even the score at 28-all entering the fourth. It was the first time Pacquiao was knocked down by Marquez in 39 rounds of their rivalry.
Pacquiao returned the favor in the fourth round by knocking Marquez down. Marquez caught his fall by placing his hand to the canvas to limit the damage.
After a back-and-forth fifth and sixth round, it appeared the momentum was on Pacquiao’s side as he pressured Marquez near the ropes toward the end of the sixth. Then, with one punch, Marquez got the victory he so desperately wanted.
After the disappointment of what he believed were poor scoring decisions in the previous fights with Pacquiao, this one wasn’t going to the judges. Marquez got the closure he wanted with a punch that took several by surprise. Pacquiao was that close to ending the fight.
“He just walked into one, you know,” Roach said. “I didn’t think (the fight) would last much longer on our side.”
The event was sold out, with more than 16,000 fans in attendance, including several pro-Marquez supporters who chanted his name throughout the fight. Notables in the crowd included Magic Johnson, reality show personality Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi from the “Jersey Shore,” basketball player Metta World Peace, talk show host Montel Williams, rapper/newbie boxing promoter 50 Cent and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Romney met Pacquiao prior to the fight in the locker room. He and his wife, Ann, sat ringside and were feet away from where Pacquiao was knocked out.
“Everyone was shocked, including the guy running for president,” Arum said. “Manny went down almost in front of him.”
Marquez clearly added more bulk to his frame for this fight, leading some — especially Roach — to speculate this week the newfound muscles were reportedly the result of performance-enhancing drugs. Whatever the case, Marquez’s punches were clearly more effective.
“I didn’t think he would be as heavy-handed as he was,” Roach said. “He hurt Manny more than in past fights.”
Questions were also asked about Marquez’s future. The 39-year-old considered retirement in November 2011 after dropping a majority decision to Pacquiao, saying the disappointment of losing on the scorecards left him lacking motivation to continue. He soon was rejuvenated and took the fourth fight, knowing it would be one last chance to get redemption for past defeats.
But what about a fifth fight?
“A fifth fight: Why not?” Arum said minutes after Saturday’s fight ended. “Have you seen a more exciting fight in years?”
Marquez, who some speculate could retire (can’t get much better than Saturday, after all), said his immediate plans include celebrating with family and friends in Mexico. He’d address his future later — much later.
For now, there’s a party to attend where he’s the guest of honor. The streets in his hometown of Mexico City were crowded with supporters wildly celebrating a victory Marquez said also was for the people in his country.
“It’s better to celebrate late than not at all,” Marquez said referring to the past close calls with Pacquiao. “So, I’ll do it late.”

Fourth time is a charm for Juan Manuel Marquez against Manny Pacquiao
Juan Manuel Marquez won’t have to worry about this one going to the judges’ scorecards. This time, once and for all, Marquez took matters into his own hands against Manny Pacquiao.
His right hand, actually.
Marquez’s straight right at the 2:59 mark of the sixth round, one second before the round ended, knocked Pacquiao out cold to the canvas to give the 39-year-old Mexican Marquez revenge against his nemesis and the knockout victory.
Marquez, after arguably winning the other three fights against Pacquiao dating back to 2004, won’t have to worry about those past disappointments after tonight. With one punch, you see, he’ll be considered the better fighter by the boxing public.
He and Pacquiao fought to a draw in 2004. Pacquiao won the other two meetings by controversial decision — first, a split decision in 2008 and then, by majority decision in November 2011.
Marquez was so disappointed with the majority decision he nearly walked away from the sport, feeling helpless after failing to win another close call against his rivals. Several observers thought he had won the last two meetings, but Marquez wasn’t satisfied. He took the fourth fight with one goal: having his hand raised by the referee.
Around 9:50 p.m. in Las Vegas, in the same ring he left from in shock November 2011, Marquez celebrated his biggest win ever. The pro-Marquez crowd of his countrymen continued chanting and singing long after the outcome. Redemption, after all, is sure sweet.
"I threw the perfect punch," Marquez said in comments relayed to media on press row.
Marquez hadn’t knocked down Pacquiao in their three previous meetings. That changed in the third round when Marquez, who likely dropped the first two rounds, connected with a powerful right to send Pacquiao down. The shot came from over the top of Marquez's head and had a lot of power.
Pacquiao returned the favor in the fifth round when he knocked down Marquez. It barely hurt Marquez, however, who touched the canvas with his glove to spot his fall to signal the official knockdown.
Marquez made his last stand in the sixth round, putting an exclamation mark on their rivalry. They likely won’t fight again, meaning Marquez’s right that knocked Pacquiao out cold will be the lasting image in the rivalry. Pacquiao was up and aware after a few minutes, but for the second time in six months, he was a loser.
“In the last rounds, I felt Pacquiao coming on and trying to knock me out,” Marquez said. “I felt a lot of danger. I knew that if I knocked him down early, I could knock him out.”
Pacquiao led by one point on each of the three judges' scorecards entering the sixth round, connecting on 95 of his 256 total punches thrown, according to CompuBox stats. Marquez connected on 52 of the 246 punches he attempted and only landed 11 of 96 jabs. But he landed the one big punch that counted, ending the match in dramatic fashion.
"I got hit by a punch I didn't see," Pacquiao said.
Check back later for full coverage.
Pacquiao records knock down in classic fifth round :
If you had to rank each of the rounds in the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez rivalry, the fifth round Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Pacquiao-Marquez IV is easily in the top three.
The back and forth action had fans on their feet, including Pacquiao pulling even with a knockdown early in the round. Marquez was barely hit, but his gloves hit the canvas to officially count as a knockdown.
The fighters each landed significant blows in the final minutes of the round, each applying pressure with a combination of punches. Marquez likely took the worse and his nose is clearly bleeding. His eyes are swollen, too.
Pacquiao appears to have the upper hand, but if this rivalry has taught us anything, don’t count out Marquez. I have Pacquiao up one rounds. So does the reporter next to me.
You can’t blame Juan Manuel Marquez for not wanting to go to the judges’ scorecard.
Marquez, who feels he was cheated on the decision in his three previous fights with Manny Pacquiao, recorded his first knockdown in series with about 1:10 left in the third round. Marquez hammered Pacquiao with a heavy right hand — it traveled a long way from the top of Marquez head — to steal the early momentum in the welterweight fight at the MGM Grand.
Pacquiao likely won the first two rounds, but give the third to Marquez in bringing the score even at 28-all. But if Marquez connects like that again, this one could be over fast. Again, that’s first time in 39 rounds his has sent Pacquiao to the canvas.
Until then, I felt Pacquiao was in control. Another classic is unfolding, folks.
Pro-Juan Manuel Marquez crowd loud in opening round, which likely went to Pacquiao :
Make no doubt about it, Juan Manuel Marquez is clearly the fans choice here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for his welterweight fight against Manny Pacquiao.
The pro-Marquez crowd provided much enthusiasm for the opening round with chants of “Marquez, Marquez” as the fighters go re-introduced to each other. This is the fourth meeting in their rivalry, with all four being evenly contested.
The opening round, which produced little action, was spent by the fighters feeling each other out. Pacquiao got in a few good licks, and at least to these amateur eye, won the round.
Looks like we are in store for another classic. Keep everyone posted.
Pacquiao, Marquez fighting for pride, bragging rights as they continue their rivalry:
A quick look at the numbers tells the entire story for tonight’s welterweight boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
It’s the fourth, and likely last, meeting in their heated rivalry, which has been defined by virtually even matches and close scoring decisions.
Some are calling this one of the sport’s all-time great rivalries, claiming it will be mentioned in the same breath as Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier.
That’s what happens when you’ve fought a combined 36 rounds and the public still wonders which fighter is better. The initial meeting in 2004 was scored a draw, and Pacquiao posted wins in the second and third meetings by controversial decision, including in November 2011, when he won by majority decision to send most of the sellout crowd at the MGM into a chorus of boos.
Pacquiao has won 19 of the 36 rounds, narrowly outscoring Marquez on the judges’ scorecards 1,024-1,017. Pacquiao landed 481 total punches in the three fights; Marquez 468. Marquez landed 352 power punches and connected on 31.3 percent of his attempts; Pacquiao's numbers are 331 and 26.2 percent.
That’s means tonight’s winner, regardless of the past three meetings, will be considered by many as the better fighter in the series.
The scene in the arena will be colorful all night with fans vocal in support of their countrymen — Pacquiao, the best fighter ever from the Philippines, and Mexico’s Marquez. The fight sold out Friday to bring in more than $10.5 million.
BREWER’S PICK: I’m going with Pacquiao by knockout in the eighth round. I know several say the 33-year-old Pacquiao, whose past five fights have gone the distance and who doesn’t have a knockout since beating Miguel Cotto in 2009, has shown signs the past two years that the tread is coming off the tires on his career. Tonight will be different. Pacquiao looked awesome in training and scored four knockdowns during camp — the first time he’s had a sparring knockdown since, you guessed it, preparing to fight Cotto. And this isn’t the same Marquez. He’s clearly added much bulk to his frame, meaning his speed — a strength in previous fights — could be in question.

Weiland fired by Stone Temple Pilots says Slash
Scott Weiland has been fired by Stone Temple Pilots, Slash says.
And the guitarist believes that’s the reason the singer is talking up a potential Velvet Revolver reunion.
Weiland went back to STP in 2008 after being dismissed by Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner, who cited “erratic behaviour” for the move.
The band have since auditioned a number of replacements but never settled on any of them.
Earlier this year VR staged a reunion charity show for the family of a close friend, leading Weiland to later claim they’d started writing new material. Hearing the news, Slash said: “He’s out of his mind.”
Asked by radio station 93X why Weiland recently said the time was right to get back with VR, the guitarist explains: “That’s because he got fired from STP.”
He continues: “these things always catch me by surprise too – I always find out about it through the media and I’m on the road in another country. I start hearing all this stuff and then I inquire within, and that’s what I was told.”
Meanwhile, Slash is happy with his solo career and his collaboration with singer Myles Kennedy. “I don’t compare anybody,” says the former Guns n’Roses man. “But we have a lot of similarities because we’re both guitar players. On top of that he’s a brilliant singer. His personality is very laid back and he’s a very hard worker. He just never ceases to amaze me.”

Hawkwind’s Huw Lloyd Langton dies
Hawkwind have announced that former member Huw Lloyd Langton has died after a cancer battle. He was 61.
The guitarist joined the band in 1970, appearing on their self-titled first album. He returned for a second stint in 1979 and remained for nine years, ultimately appearing on ten of their records.
He’d been a member of Widowmaker and played as part of Leo Sayer’s band. He’d continued working with Dave Brock – the pair recently performed a charity concert for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. He also made regular guest appearances with Hawkwind, or performed support slots.
He fronted his own band, the Lloyd Langton Group, which released nine albums. He also played session guitar for the Meads of Asphodel.
The band say in a statement: “Our great friend and fellow musician Huw Lloyd Langton has sadly lost his long battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully last night (Thursday) at home, with his wife Marion by his side.
“Huw had been bravely fighting cancer for a couple of years, but was determined not to let the battle affect his day to day life. He continued to play his guitar, laugh, joke and share the great love he had in his heart, with all who knew him.
“As he wished, he was at home when the time came.
“Huw was one of the great guitarists with an individual style and character. He is gone but never forgotten by any of us. He will live on in our music and in our hearts.
“A book of condolence has been opened.”

Pacquiao versus Marquez 4 - Much more than just a fight
Boxing is just boxing. Two fighters put on gloves and punch each other. However, there are some select moments when boxing is so much more than just boxing. Such is the case for the fourth battle between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. They will step up to the ring to renew their rivalry on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time), and what’s at stake is more than just a win because this one is more than just a fight.
Marquez believes Pacquiao took everything away from him. In their series, Marquez has a draw and two losses to show for. “He feels that he has been wronged all this time,” said Marquez’s trainer. If Marquez managed to win two or three of the fights against Pacquiao as he claims he did, he would have been the one who was catapulted into superstardom. Maybe he would have gotten all those juicy matches against the likes of Oscar de la Hoya and Miguel Cotto. Maybe he would now be the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.
The losses to Pacquiao did not only stain Marquez’s record. Those losses have cost him a lot both financially and in terms of legacy.
For Pacquiao, it’s hard to accept that a lot of people still think Marquez is better than him. He won twice but people still feel that he needs to prove himself against Marquez. The eight-division world champion is in a weird situation. He needs a dominant unanimous decision win or a knockout for this fight to be considered a success from this end. For Marquez, he only needs a win, no matter how he gets it.
Sometimes boxing fights transcend boxing and this is one of those rare times. The rivalry between the Philippines and Mexico has been on fire as of late. The results have been pretty even, so Pacquiao and Marquez will ultimately decide which country will be the winner.
This fight is different because it feels like what’s at stake is more than just one win. The fighter who wins the match wins the rivalry. That’s why they’re doing it again. That’s why another epic battle should be expected tomorrow.
Will Marquez finally get the win he’s been dreaming about for the past decade or will Pacquiao prove once and for all that he is the better fighter? All the questions that have lingered throughout this tremendous rivalry will all be answered tomorrow. - AMD, GMA News

Women architects, designers of Las Vegas showcase talent in downtown gallery
There are no talented women designers in Las Vegas.
That’s what Amy Finchem was told by her male peers in the architecture and design field when they heard she was planning an exhibit showcasing the work of local female designers.
She proved them wrong Thursday night with the opening of “Women in Design,” a blind juried exhibition featuring work by such women in the fields of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture. Six designers were ultimately selected from a total of 15 submissions.
“I was pleased with the overall quality of the submissions that we got, especially for the first time out. It was really, really difficult to pick just six,” she says.
The exhibit is the latest effort by COLAB, the local design nonprofit and gallery at Art Square that Finchem founded and directs, to further community dialogue about Las Vegas’ architectural landscape. Finchem, along with judges Alex Epstein of El Cortez, Quentin Abramo of Faciliteq Architectural Interiors and Art Square developer Brett Sperry, provide well-rounded looks at both built and unbuilt work that showcase designers’ overall capability and aesthetics, rather than the details of a single project.
“Women in Design” is not the first time Finchem’s efforts have been met with raised eyebrows: She faced similar skepticism when she founded COLAB earlier this spring.
“People said, well we hire outside of the city [for architecture and design work] because we don’t have any local talented designers,” she says, a sentiment COLAB disproved with “Young Guns,” a curated exhibit of work by UNLV School of Architecture graduates who were subsequently hired by the city of Las Vegas to design Project Neon’s gateway to downtown. COLAB’s Downtown Backyard Project, an effort to design and construct parks and gardens in downtown’s Arts District, is also gaining attention and momentum among locals.
“For this show I think it’s the same as ‘Young Guns,’ where there’s a perception that we don’t have local talent here, period, and certainly not women designers. So this has really given the platform to show that we have really great, talented women in this city,” Finchem, 35, says.
While visibility and local employment opportunities are issues faced by Las Vegas’ design community at large, the struggle is particularly challenging for women, who often must juggle the fast-paced fieldwork and round-the-clock schedule that architecture demands with raising a family. While working at a large firm, where meetings often ran late at the end of the day, Finchem began noticing that women were the only ones who got up to leave when time went over.
“They had to go pick up their kids,” says Finchem, a single mother of three. “It truly does impact the perception of those women in their ability to fulfill their jobs — that they’re distracted, or they’re not reliable. Those are misconceptions because any woman that I’ve worked with in this field works harder and is more persistent, constantly trying to prove themselves to live up to the standards. They don’t automatically get that respect when they walk in the door — you know you’re going to be doubted from the get-go, so you have to be on your game all the time.”
Finchem hopes that exhibits like “Women in Design,” which is open through February, will help shed light on those challenges and catalyze more open discussion about them in both the workplace and the community. In the coming months, she plans to incorporate events such as a film screening about women in design, guest lectures and panel discussions with women in related fields including construction and engineering.
“What it looks like to be an employee for somebody doesn’t have to look the same [from person to person],” she says. “We really want to get in the habit of these exhibit launches being a start to dialogue about whatever the topic is.”
Women in design features the work of local designers Lindzay Green, landscape architecture; Gina Grillo, architecture; Renee Smith, architecture; Alice O’Keefe, interior design; Kim Daoust, interior design; Briana Tiberti, interior design.
COLAB Las Vegas is open Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and also available by appointment.

Pacquiao, Marquez make weight for Saturday’s sold-out welterweight fight
Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez made weight today for their welterweight fight Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Marquez took to the scales first at the MGM Grand, weighing in at 143 pounds. Pacquiao followed at 147 pounds — the welterweight maximum.
This is the fourth, and likely last, fight in a heated series — some boxing experts call it one of the sport’s all-time rivalries — between two fighters that history has proven are evenly matched.
Their inaugural fight in 2004 was ruled a draw. Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs) won by split decision in 2008 and by majority decision last November. In the majority decision, one judge scored the fight a draw and another scored it in Marquez’s favor at 115-113. But the third judge saw it 116-112 in favor of Pacquiao to give him the majority decision by one round.
Yes, it’s been that close.
The weigh-in, which was free to the public, was attended by about 6,000 fans — a majority of whom cheered loudly for the Mexican Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs). The event also was attended by several boxing legends, including former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, former five-division champion and Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard, and HBO commentator and former champ Roy Jones Jr.
The list of notables also included newbie promoter 50 Cent. The rapper was on stage when his fighter, undefeated Cuban defector Yuriokis Gamboa, weighed in for his undercard fight.
Officials from Top Rank, which is promoting the event, announced earlier Friday that the 16,000-seat arena has been sold out. They said the gate will exceed $10.5 million. The card will be televised on closed circuit at several MGM properties on the Strip, and Top Rank officials also expect those seats to sell out.
“Manny and Juan Manuel may have unfinished business in the ring, but as far as the live box office, it’s business as usual — another sellout,” Bob Arum, the Top Rank president, said in a statement. “I encourage boxing fans in Las Vegas to go to their favorite MGM Resort International property to purchase their closed-circuit seats today because the projections are looking like a sellout there, too.”
Pacquiao, who in June lost a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley for his first loss in seven years, is a heavy betting favorite at the MGM sports book. Pacquiao is a -370 favorite (bet $37 to win $10) while Marquez is listed at +280.

Wolfgang Philippines 2012 - Sandata Lyrics
'Di luluhod at walang iiwasan
Ako ang simula ng pagbabago
Ako ang susi sa pangarap mo
Parusa, pasanin mabigat sa damdamin
Kahit inosente pinipilit umamin
Walang mapuntahan, walang mataguan
Isang himagsikan yan ang kailangan
Ako ang simula ng pagbabago
Ako ang susi sa pangarap mo
Kasangga mong wagas ngayon hanggang bukas
Kaalyado mong tunay sa tuwid na landas
Matibay ang lubid, kagitingang likas
Ako ang katarungan ng sandata mo
Larawan na walang mukhang galit at luha
Pinilit kang itapon
Sa paglipas ng mga panahon
Gumising ka't bumangon
Oras mo'y padating ngayon
Masdan mo ang pagyanig ng lupa
Pagsubok sayo ng lahat ng bathala
Sa iyong kamay, lahat nakasalalay
Itaas mo sa langit tanglaw ng tagumpay
Ako ang simula ng pagbabago
Ako ang susi sa pangarap mo
Kasangga mong wagas ngayon hanggang bukas
Kaalyado mong tunay sa tuwid na landas
Matibay ang lubid, kagitingang likas
Ako ang katarungan ng sandata mo

Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax in Grammy nominations
Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Anthrax are among the big-name acts nominated in the 55th annual Grammy Awards, which takes place on February 10.
They appear in the category of Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance along with Lamb of God, Marilyn Manson and Halestorm for the gong which is traditionally handed out long before the main ceremony is broadcast on national TV.

The category of Best Rock Performance will be won by Alabama Shakes, the Black Keys, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons or Bruce Springsteen.
The Black Keys, Springsteen, Colplay, Muse and Jack White will battle it out for the Best Rock Album award. No other acts are mentioned in the Best Rock Song list either.
Maiden won their first Grammy in 2011 for the track El Dorado from their fifteenth studio album, The Final Frontier. Megadeth have now notched up eleven nominations but no wins, while Anthrax have never previously been named.
In other categories, Tom Waits is up for Best Alternative Music Album, Bonnie Raitt gets a nod for Best Americana Album and Best Blues Album will be won by Shemakia Copeland, Dr John, Ruthie Foster, Heritage Blues Orchestra or Joan Osborne.

Alice in Chains complete fifth album
Alice in Chains have completed their fifth album, guitarist Jerry Cantrell has confirmed.
While no release date has been set, it’s thought the second record featuring frontman William DuVall will be out next year.
The band hired DuVall in 2006 after the death of Lane Staley four years previously. They released Black Gives Way To Blue to great acclaim in 2009.
Cantrell recently explained they’d started work on new material last year – but the pressure to deliver made them feel like they were “having to deal with the sophomore jinx for the second time in our career.”
The guitarist was sidelined for some time after undergoing surgery to deal with a damaged shoulder.
Now he tells Guitar World: “In my opinion, Black Gives Way To Blue stood up to anything else we’ve put out – and this new one is right up there as well.”
Alice in Chains will appear at the Download Festival in June 2013, and also at Rock in Rio in Brazil in September.

How to Make Money with an Online Store
One of the first things that comes to mind when many think of a home business is selling something. Setting up an online store can be a good way to earn money, especially since it is possible to do it by either selling your own goods, or becoming involved in drop shipping, so that it isn’t necessary to keep goods in stock.
No matter how you decide to run your online store, though, you need to give careful thought to how you set up your store, and how you market your goods.
3 Tips for Successfully Establishing Your Online Store
Establishing a successful online business requires planning and effort. Steve Chou runs Bumblebee Linens, a successful ecommerce store selling cloth napkins and mens handkerchiefs. Steve runs the store with his wife, and they made a profit of six figures in their first year, by carefully considering their target market — and how to market to that target.Steve offered these three quick tips for setting up a successful online store:
- Pick a product that is not readily available in stores.
- Pick a product with an ambiguous dollar value. Stay away from brand name goods that are easy to comparison shop.
- Pick a product that is timeless, and that will never become obsolete or go out of fashion.
When looking at Bumblebee Linens as a case study, you can see that Steve has followed his own advice. You can’t find handkerchiefs, especially those that are custom embroidered, easily in stores. Additionally, these types of handkerchiefs are hard to find, since they have an element of customization and personalization. The dollar value isn’t set. And, finally, a nice handkerchief is always acceptable as a momento, or a token, and a very fashionable addition to almost any occasion or special event.
But you don’t have to choose handkerchiefs. There are plenty of items that fit this description — especially if you are particularly good at making something hand-made, or if you can find a good wholesale price on something that isn’t available in the big box stores.
Making money with your online store starts with carefully considering what you will sell, and how you will get it to customers. You can use drop shipping to avoid keeping the items in stock yourself, or you can actually sell items that you keep with you, and arrange to ship them yourself. Steve is running an excellent course on running a profitable online business, if you are interested in starting your own online store I highly recommend this course.
Market Your Online Store
Of course, next you have to figure out how you are going to market your online store. People won’t buy what you’re selling if they don’t know about it. Some of the common ways to get the word out on your online store include:- Use an AdWords campaign to increase your visibility online.
- Sign up with other ad networks and programs to help you place banners and ads on a variety of web sites.
- Make use of social media by creating profiles on Facebook and Twitter.
- Start a blog to draw traffic to your online store.
- Encourage bloggers to help spread the word by offering an affiliate program that pays commissions.
- Buy more traditional advertising in print, radio, and magazines (although this can become very expensive, very quickly).

Obama’s Led Zeppelin tribute
US President Barack Obama hailed Led Zeppelin for “making us all feel young” as Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones received Kennedy Center Honors at the White House on Sunday.
The official video below shows Obama joking with the band about their rock’n'roll past, while acknowledging their contribution to popular culture.
The president said: “I’ve worked with the speechwriters – there’s no smooth transition from ballet to Led Zeppelin.
“When the Brits initially kept their distance Led Zeppelin grabbed the US. It’s been said a generation of young people survived teenage angst with a pair of headphones and a Zeppelin album.
“They redefined the rock’n'roll lifestyle. We do not have video of this, but there were some hotel rooms trashed. So it’s fitting we’re doing this in a room with windows three inches thick – and secret service all around. So, guys, just settle down. These paintings are valuable. They look very calm though, don’t they?
“Tonight we honour Led Zeppelin for making us all feel young.”
Meanwhile, Jason Bonham has revealed how he surprised his bandmates by appearing at the concert in their honour.
The drummer, who replaced his father John at the band’s 2007 reunion, performed with Heart as part of a tribute show that also featured Dave Grohl, Kid Rock and Lenny Kravitz.
Bonham said: “It was so incredible to see their faces, sat there next to the president, and I walked on stage and played Stairway with an all-star band.
“The guys knew who was playing – but they didn’t know I would be on drums. Their faces lit up, and the smiles and tears… Well, you can see it on December 26. It was fantastic. What a way to close the show!”
The performance will be broadcast on US network CBS.

Google puts up Typhoon Pablo crisis map
Internet giant Google set up a crisis map for Typhoon Pablo days before the typhoon ravaged Mindanao.
This crisis map, available in Filipino, shows the typhoon track, landslide- and flood-prone areas, areas under public storm warning signals, and other important information about the disaster.
In a Google Hangout on Dec. 4, Anthony Baxter of Google.org's Crisis Response Team said that they have been doing crisis maps for the Philippines for some years now, starting with Tropical Storm Ondoy in 2009.
"During the crisis we need to inform people about what’s going on, especially for Filipinos overseas who have relatives and loved ones back in the Philippines... After the crisis, how do the people recover?" Baxter said.
"It's part of our corporate social responsibility. Basically, we want people to take the map and use it," he added.
Google's head of outreach team in Southeast Asia Aileen Apolo said that they are working with various government agencies, including PAGASA and specific local government units, and a pool of volunteers to collate data for the crisis map.
"Volunteers have been working with us for the past couple of typhoons. We also have [the] Google Developers group. In the Philippines, we actually have a strong mapping community who even sets up 'Map ups' events across the country," Apolo said.
Baxter also said aside from Ondoy and Pablo, Google was also able to set up crisis maps for Sendong and several earthquakes in the Philippines.
"It's well-received, especially for Filipinos who live abroad. It's an easy way to get in touch with their loved ones," said Apolo.
She added that it has been particularly helpful in showing locations of evacuation areas, and those areas with power cuts.
"It's for the public, crisis responders, including those who work for government agencies," said Baxter.
Baxter also said that the Google crisis map project is still open for development.
"Essentially, it's going to be driven by disasters. There's always work to be done. But it could be improved," he said.
He also added that they are still looking into upcoming technologies and what information is needed for future disasters. — BM, GMA News

Lugang Café beyond the 'xiao long bao'
I first heard about Lugang Café from my sister a couple of years ago, when she told me about this restaurant in Greenhills that always has a long queue of diners. Food lovers apparently go there for the xiao long bao (which some spell sialompao), that dumpling with soup inside.
Fast forward to sometime last month, when I found myself with a media group straining our necks to see just how the xiao long bao is made.
Three chefs with dough-covered hands demonstrated how it’s done: first, the dough was cut into small pieces and flattened almost paper-thin, then filled with either chicken or ground pork – somewhat like siomai – and jellified stock. The ends of the dumpling were twisted into 18 perfect pleats and gathered into a cone.
“Yes, there are 18 pleats because 18 is a lucky number. The pleats have to be perfectly aligned after steaming,” said Karen Tiu, who handles the operations at Lugang Café.
After steaming in bamboo baskets, the dumplings are served, with the jellified stock transformed into a tasty broth. How to eat it? “Bite and sip,” advised Reena Arnaldo, human resources manager of the café.
Xiao long bao has become the specialty of the house such that last month alone, 4,300 baskets (mostly pork, although they also have chicken and vegetarian dumplings) were served to the café customers. And with eight pieces per basket, that makes for a whole lot of xiao long bao.
But there is more to the Lugang Café than xiao long bao. During a press briefing early November at their Greenhills outlet, Katrina K. Chua, daughter of owners Peter and Annabelle Chua, and head of dining operations, introduced new dishes in time for the Chinese-Taiwanese restaurant’s second anniversary on Nov. 22.
One of the new dishes is the Black Pepper Premium Beef Ribs, a flavorful dish that should go well with the light Chicken Topped with Scallion and Ginger Oil. I prefer putting a generous serving of ginger oil on top of the cold chicken slices for a more pronounced taste.
The Dong-Bo Pork Belly with Steamed Buns is like pata tim on cuapao, with the meat so tender to the bite. The Steamed Scallops with Garlic Vermicelli (bihon) can be addictive, as you can pop these in your mouth in between bites of the other dishes. The Mayonnaise Prawns are like big-sized popcorn shrimps with a gentle hint of wasabi topped with some mayo, a sure hit among kids and kids at heart. And for veggies, there's the new Fookien dish Pumpkin Seafood Rice Souffle—this has fish fillet mixed in, and is a meal in itself.
These new dishes complement the xiao long bao and other best-selling dishes they have, such as the Steamed Fish Head with Pickled Red Peppers, Three Cup Chicken, Stir-Fried Beef with Chili Peppers, and Soft Tofu and Mushrooms in Abalone Sauce. They also go well with their trademark dessert—the humongous (12 inches) and definitely meant-to-be-shared Bellagio Breeze, a tall halo-halo with red and green mung beans, taro, tapioca balls, and candied pineapple over shaved ice and flavored with condensed milk.
Katrina said about 80 percent of the café's dishes are from Bellagio Café in Shanghai. Lugang Café, after all, is a franchise of Bellagio Café, and is the first store of Bellagio outside China. The Chuas just changed the name to “lugang,” which means small alley or town in Chinese, to give a more Chinese ring to it. They also added more dishes to the new menu to cater to the tastes of the Filipino palate.
Although there are numerous Chinese restaurants in the country, Katrina said their food sets them apart from the rest. “The food is different. The taste is modern with a hint of traditional,” she said. Sweet and spicy are the main flavors of the dishes, with a subtle hint of ginger. The ingredients are imported from China and Taiwan, and Chinese chefs lead the kitchen operations.
The same modern-and-traditional theme is carried over in the Greenhills outlet's interiors which incorporate metal (steel), fire (lighting), and earth (flowers) elements. Their Mall of Asia branch, opened in 2011, is more traditional, said Katrina. Opening this month is their new branch at SM City North EDSA's The Block, and next year, they're going to be in Fort Bonifacio as well, no doubt covering all areas to satisfy xiao long bao fans in the metro.
Whatever it is you order, though, make sure to get the Aloe Jelly in Honey Lemon Juice as your drink. Now that to me is a winner. – YA, GMA News
