Apple's iPhone retakes top spot in China smartphone market: research

BEIJING - Apple reclaimed its position as the top smartphone seller in China after 6 years, clocking a record market share in the final quarter of 2021 as US sanctions hit rival Huawei, according to researchers.

A surge in sales saw the iPhone maker account for 23 percent of the highly competitive market in October-December, industry analysis firm Counterpoint said in a report released Wednesday.

That put the US giant in pole position for the first time since the final three months of 2015, toppling China's Vivo.

Vivo and another local brand Oppo were not far behind, driven in part by their "strong offline penetration", Counterpoint said.

But smartphone sales in the country also dropped 9 percent on-year in the period.

"Apple's stellar performance was driven by a mix of its pricing strategy and gain from Huawei's premium base," said Counterpoint research analyst Mengmeng Zhang.

"Apple rose to first place in China right after the iPhone 13 was released in September," she added, noting it had a lower starting price than its rivals.

The shift comes as Chinese telecom giant Huawei was caught in the crosshairs of Beijing and Washington's trade and technology standoff.

The United States has barred Huawei from buying crucial components such as microchips, and forced it to create its own operating system by cutting it off from using Google's Android operating system.

In December, Huawei said its annual revenue fell nearly a third from the previous year to 634 billion yuan ($99.5 billion).

China is a key market for Apple, with sales in the Greater China region -- including the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- surging 70 percent in the year to September.

Trading up? Go for the Vivo X21

Visit us on Instagram To be You;  Facebook: To be You; e-mail inq.tobeyou@gmail.com

You’ve had your entry-level smartphone for years, and even though it feels like a part of you by now, you’re ready to move on to greater things—larger internal storage, more megapixels on a camera, high-tech features not found on just any phone. It’s time to trade up.

A worthy successor to your old reliable phone, the Vivo X21 is huge in many ways—from its physical dimensions (154.50 x 74.80 x 7.40 mm) to its internal memory (128 GB, expandable to up to 256 GB via micro SD card) and its generous touch screen (nearly 100 percent screen-to-body ratio). But at 156 g, this lightweight sliver of a phone with a glossy finish fits nicely on the palm of your hand as well as the pocket of your jeans or a slim purse.

If you’re used to operating other brands, the X21 might take some getting used to at first. Still, it’s pretty user-friendly, with tips that pop up on the screen to help make fiddling with the phone a hassle-free experience. These tips come in handy for Face Access and In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, two state-of-the-art cellphone features that give you added security and make each use of the X21 fun. And speaking of fun, get a kick out of Live Wallpaper, which surprises you with a different crisp and color-rich image each time you unlock your phone.

While the X21’s cameras don’t boast the highest megapixels in the market (12MP front and rear), they certainly do not disappoint, yielding sharp, crystal-clear, and colorful pictures through a range of shooting options and the 24 million photographic units of its Dual Pixel Sensors. AI technology beefs up the cameras’ capabilities, meaning you can expect precise, high-definition selfies as well as wacky group shots.

AI has also improved the Game Mode feature, allowing hardcore gamers to enjoy uninterrupted hours of playing even while taking in phone calls or when someone accidentally touches the screen.
It even has music lovers covered. An AK4376A Hi-Fi audio chip and voice-enhancing Deepfield Technology complement the phone’s superior visual quality.
Perhaps the most amazing thing about the X21 is how it redefines the meaning of smartphone. While attempting to sign up on Facebook, the X21 was steps ahead, correctly identifying the user before she even typed her name. We think this is you, read the caption with the name of the user. Cool.

The Vivo X21 comes with a clear protective case, charger, headset with microphone, and SIM ejector pin. It was launched to the media on June 21 at the Grand Ballroom of Okada Manila.

WATCH: YouTuber renders rumored look of Google Pixel 2 XL smartphone

An interesting render of Google Pixel 2 XL was created by YouTuber Concept Creator. He based his 3D render on a leaked image published by Android Police on the upcoming Google smartphone.

According to Android Police, the upcoming Google device will have an end-to-end AMOLED screen made by LG. It will feature an always-on display similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S8. The render also shows a bumpless camera at the back and a slight indentation for the fingerprint scanner.

Previous reports speculated on a squeezable frame that can wake the device from standby, whether the screen is on or off.

As for the color schemes used on the video, it’s likely that Google may opt for a different palette on the actual products.

This render is the culmination of all current leaked information on the Google Pixel 2 and there’s not really much to begin with. Google is still keen on keeping their newest product hush-hush.

For now, all that consumers can do is to wait for more leaks, or for Google’s eventual announcement which could happen in the next few months. JB

Android co-creator demonstrates new ‘Essential’ phone

During the annual Code Conference, an invite-only event for discussing the latest technologies and their impact with some of the biggest names in the tech industry, Android co-creator Andy Rubin introduced a new device that he believes what future smartphones should be like.

Dubbed the “Essential,” it runs on Android and features an edge-to-edge screen that almost completely occupies the front face of the device.

While doing the interview, Rubin also demonstrated some of the capabilities of the Essential, such as its modular 360-degree camera that snaps on to the device through magnets, and connects wirelessly to the phone via near field communication (NFC).

He also demonstrated its feature of being able to scroll through the phone screen to do a selfie, in the same manner one would scroll through a 3D photo posted on Facebook.

Rubin emphasized the importance of wireless connectivity for future devices, stressing the need to do away with cable connections for smoother interactions between gadgets and ultimately afford more ease of use to customers.

The rest of the Essential’s hardware include a titanium ceramic exterior that doesn’t leave blemishes when touched, 128GB of internal storage, 4GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel front camera, and a 13-megapixel rear shooter that also does 4K video recording. It still has a USB-C port which Rubin states as something needed for the transition, but has no headphone jack.

Price is set at $699 (almost P35,000) with preorders already available for four color variants: Black Moon, Stellar Gray, Pure White and Ocean Depths. Devices are estimated to ship in around 30 days. Alfred Bayle/JB

Nokia relaunches iconic 3310 mobile model

BARCELONA, Spain — Finnish brand Nokia, a former mobile star, on Sunday launched three new Android smartphones and unveiled a revamped version of its iconic 3310 model more than a decade after it was phased out.

Unlike the original, which was known for its sturdiness, the new Nokia 3310 will allow web browsing.

The new version will bring back its predecessor’s popular “Snake” game and distinctive ringtones, said Arto Nummela, the head of Finnish start-up HMD Global which will produce the phone under a licensing agreement with Nokia.

“The telephone will allow you to talk for 22 hours, ten times more than the original,” he said during a presentation in Barcelona on the eve of the start of the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest mobile phone show.

Launched in 2000, Nokia’s original 3310 sold nearly 120 million units worldwide before it was discontinued in 2005, making it one of the world’s best-selling mobile phones.

Analysts said resurrecting the popular model was a clever way for HMD Global to relaunch Nokia’s brand.

“HMD launched three new smartphones and an iconic mobile. It is a way to create a halo effect around the other models by reviving talk about the Nokia brand,” said Thomas Husson, a mobile analyst at Forrester.

In addition to the new 3310, HMD presented three new smartphones, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 which will sell for different prices.

The Nokia 6 was already available in China and will now go on sale globally.

“We think (Nokia) could take 5 percent of the global smartphone market by the end of 2019. But it needs to get big quick or it won’t work,” said CCS Insight’s device specialist and chief of research, Ben Wood.

Nokia was the world’s top mobile maker between 1998 and 2011 but was overtaken by South Korean rival Samsung after failing to respond to the rapid rise of smartphones.

Its telephone brand remains widely recognized, especially in developing markets.

Now a leading telecom equipment maker, Nokia sold its entire handset business to Microsoft Corp in 2014.

Last year HMD bought Microsoft Mobile’s handset business and the right to use the Nokia brand.

Under the agreement, Nokia will receive royalty payments from HMD for sales of every Nokia branded mobile phone or tablet. CBB
